Can't thank DH enough for such a beautiful gift. One that just keeps on giving. I was very tardy putting the spent flower in the garbage. Next time think I'll be tardy again! I'm hoping these root.

I've tried to root florist roses,it never works. The only time I can root a rose is with a cutting from a living rose bush. I use the "baggie method". Go over to the Rose Propagation link on the GardenWeb for more information.

Technically I could cut the stalk down about an inch below the new growth, put the stem in rooting compound and press into potting soil and then place in a greenhouse - like splitting a pop bottle in half, cutting Vs out of the top to fit inside the bottom and keep the top off for air circulation. So long as the leaves don't touch the sides, the stock should root and the plant will absorb the moisture through it's leaves. Done this before. I've just cleaned these up and at this moment have no potting soil. Just added that to my shopping list!

We sure did not know triple_b ! You would be welcome Florence. You can just pick a little amount of rose petals during the summer (Zephy is a good choice!) and keep them in small bags in the freezer until you have enough to make the jam). Btw Here is another great link for all the rose products one´s heart can desire. (Including the Rose Petal Jam). Best Rose Oil, Water (Get the little atomizer!). I use the Rose Oil in aromatherapy lamps and it scents the house those winter days when I long for roses and summer and read rose books. Do check this link there is lots of information and pictures about the production of Bulgarian rose products. Here is a link that might be useful: Bulgarian Rose Oil and products

Today I recieved my rose order from ValleyK Greenhouses. They pack their roses so much better than Cedar Hollow. Each rose was wrapped in cardboard and they sent 10 roses in 3 boxes so they were easier to handle. They are bigger than the ones that I recieved from them last year with the exception of 2 Marie Bugnet which are quite small. I had a broken rose in this shipment too, but it only broke off half way. There is still leaves left on this rose. That is the only damage from shipping that I can see on this bunch. They look much nicer than my Cedar Hollow roses which are stripped of so many leaves. But one the plus side, most of the roses from Cedar Hollow are srouting out new leaves. I also recived my plants from Dominion House today. I had ordered a bareroot Kaleidoscope. The stem is huge!!! It is starting to send out leaves as well. I ordered some lilacs, clematis, lilies and perennials from them as well. The lilacs and clematis are fine, the lilies are a bit shrivelled, and the perennials are sick. I'm sure some are dead. Honestly, I don't know if I would order perennials from them again. Roses, I would though. I think that they were in the boxes for quite a while, there is lots of white growth. I moved a 5 yr old JP Connell the other day in the rain. It should have been moved sooner because it had flower buds on already. It is really sulking. Oh well, If it doesn't make it, they are easy enough to find to replace. I have quite a few of my older roses with flower buds on. It won't be long before the roses start to bloom!!!! Shelley

It is actually suggested around here that you plant roses with the graft union several inches below ground so that if the plant does die back to the ground that what comes back from the root has a chance to be your preferred plant, which may have grown some of its own roots. Then mulch. Don't cut back until spring when you see what has died. Climbers you can detach from the trellis and lie close to the ground and mulch. I tend to grow roses from cuttings from friends that I know will be hardy locally, and even as a relatively inexperienced rose grower I've been reasonably successful. Unfortunately, many of the roses I've seen at big box stores aren't hardy for this area, so enjoy their blooms this year and hope for another mild winter, preferably with good snow cover. I'm biased in favor of roses that I don't have to fuss over too much, so I don't grow hybrid teas and research whether the rose is prone to blackspot or other deseases before I buy them. Anecdotally, sprinkling alfalfa meal or corn meal under the plant is supposed to reduce blackspot, but I've never had enough of a problem to try it. Many of my roses are early once bloomers because they are done blooming before the J beetles arrive. The ones that aren't I've planted in an area that isn't good J beetle territory - a clearing surrounded by much woodland. I'll be spreading Milky Spore desease on the small amount of lawn there as I've had success with that reducing the J beetle population at a previous house/garden. I don't have any neighbors with lawns within J beetle flying distance, and I've heard that this is only successful if all the nearby area is milky spored. Another problem is rose chafers, which are insects about the size of J beetles, but longer, slimmer, and tanner. They emerge a bit earlier than J beetles and chew on the blooms. I don't know of any organic way to prevent them other than hand picking. They are common if you are near fallow agricultural land, which surrounds my current house. I don't have problems with them in the wooded location. I hope this is helpful, and if you want cuttings or have other specific questions, I'll check back here (though maybe not right away as work is busy right now.)

Oh I just love your Beary Berry Iris!!!! I would buy that in an instant if I could find it and if it grew here. What a stunner!!! Shockwave is such an intense yellow!!! Love it!! Shadow Dancer is so unique for a striped. Lovely!! Perfume Tiger reminds me of my Julio Iglesias - same shade of pink. Again, lovely!! :) I love Smokin Hot - I've come to realize that I really like the lighter reverse roses. Brooks Red is my fav of your roses!!! Oh my!!! The color is similar to Chicago Peace. Oh my!!! Carol

You can do that???? I had no idea! Somehow I always think of roses as being very "fussy" -- and I'm not terribly attentive *grin* so they don't have much hope here. Looks like you have some excellent new growth!

I'm not sure about my roses lasting with their new growth - did take the tip and go to the roses forum and read through that. Have some ideas now on the type of soil/soiless environment to root them in - now I definitely have to get out!
I'll let ya know how this goes over time.

Hope it works peggy! Those are/were beautiful roses,my favorite color.I never knew they would leaf out like that again.I have grown African Violets from leaves.Never thought I could do it but was reading on one of the AV forums about growing them from the leaves and thought I would try it.I had an old plastic recipe box with a lid about 14x8x3 or 4 inches deep.It was clear but was the smoky color plastic and the lid fit on pretty tightly.Made a nice little greenhouse/incubator.I filled it with AV potting soil and dampened it a little bit. Then took leaves from the plants and dipped the stem in root stimulator and just stuck them down about 1/2 in into the soil.Covered the box with the top and waited.Pretty soon I had 10 little AV's.I have given many away and have many still sitting on a shelf in my dining room. It's almost addictive.I'm always sticking a new leaf in there just to see what it will do!LOL
