Noise in liquid line after evaporator coil replacement

I just had the A-coil replaced in my Goodman A/C (above furnace) due to a leak. I know there are typically noises during start-up and shut-off with the R-22 equalizing pressure inside the system but I'm concerned that even after 10 minutes of operation there is a intermittent "wooshing" noise coming from the high pressure liquid line (every 10-20 seconds). The sound is similar to trying to push air between your front two teeth with your tongue. It almost sounds as if there's air in the line. I called the company that did the repair and they said not to worry about it if it's cooling fine. Am I crazy for worrying about this or should it be looked at?

Does this happen sometimes or all the time? Depending on the size of unit,the type of metering device, the outside temperature, does it have a receiver, what temperature you have the unit set at,it can take up to 10 minutes to totally equalize.

I personally don't like the answer they gave you. Perhaps they didn't feel like explaining the scenario's. Just because it's cooling doesn't necessarily mean there's no air in the system. With a cap tube metering device that would hold true for the most part. If there is air in there, you can bet you will know in short order because you will have a burn out or, as it gets consistently hotter, you will notice less cooling.

If they properly evacuated the system and added filter/dryers I wouldn't be concerned.

Happens all the time in approx. 10-30sec intervals. Even after 10 mintues of running.

I'm not sure if they properly evacuated the system or added filter/dryers...but if they did, would there still be a noise coming from the liquid line?

$330 just for 2.75# of Puron sounds pretty high. We charge about $129 for a leak search on top of $84 service call. As for calling around and doing immediately, a coil change is at least 1/2 day job and not something every tech does. We sure don't have that kind of time in our schedule that we can do immediately. We also send installers with sheet metal equipment for a neat job. If hot, we'll offer a refill discounted to tide them over. Not sure that $1400 is out of line. We always recover remaining refrigerant and put in fresh just to be sure we aren't reusing contaminated juice.

The thermostat was incorrectly wired so that on A/C the blower speed was on low instead of high. When corrected to run at high speed, most of the line noise disappeared. The low air flow was causing the refrigerant valve to open and close frequently or "hunt". I had been told the motor was wired correctly for high speed on A/C but a check of the return air flow showed it to be low. Verified that there was no current in the high speed wire to the blower motor.

the old adage applies here.....you get what you pay for. I am sure that there are great techs out there doing home warranty work, I just don't know of a lot of them The reason is because the Home warranty companies really try and beat down the tech/companies on their work/prices. The first tech put r-22 into your unit and should have at leaste looked for a leak as units do not just run out of refrigerant. The 2nd tech is talking about the recovery charge I believe. I would ask the home warranty folks if they cover this charge and if not why not as it is part of the proper installation of the new evaporator coil. If they are putting in a new coil, verify that you are getting one for the right size and for the refrigerant that your a/c system uses. Make sure that a new liquid line filter drier is installed with the new coil. Will the tech "pull a proper vacuum" to check and see if there are no other leaks? If the tech is brazing instead of soldering will he purge with nitrogen? All good questions to ask

The first guy you had out isn't giving bs. I am not aware of any system that will allow mixing refrigerant and I wouldn't recommend using this system if it did exist. As noted, mixing two kinds of oils isn't possible and will result in more costly repairs. Do you realize a 15 yr old system is costing you most likely 50% more each month on utility bills. Basically your making monthly payments on a unit on borrowed time with no warranties. Definitely get several quotes. Don't worry there are professionals that can help and recommend what's best for your needs. Just know it's not going to be cheap. But will be a great investment in the short run. And call companies that have references and offer 100% customer satisfaction in writing. You won't go wrong. And yes ACCA is a good place to get references.

If you're talking about a "sizzling" sound of sorts, my system does that as well periodically in cooling mode. I never thought much about it since the system cools great and has had no reported issues during the past couple of checks (doesn't mean all is right, of course).

ok, my reply was assuming the unit had shut off and you were still hearing this noise. Generally, under most conditions, there is about a 3 minute wait for pressures to equalize after the unit has shut off. You will hear that noise the entire time the unit is running. There is no equalization while the unit is running. Yes, with new filter/dryers, you will still hear the noise.
