Take the Tax Credit or Wait??????

Hello - we have two Trane XE1000 units (10 SEER) that are 15 and 16 years old. They are running fine and are regularly maintained. Folks I have spoken with in the HVAC trade hold the units in high regard. We're generally happy with them, but they are old as far as heat pumps are concerned.

We're trying to decide if we should take the Energy Tax Credit and replace the units before they fail. The credit is worth a total of $1500 and is set to expire this year. We've priced out new units and they'd run us between 10-12K (we're dual-zone) for 15-17 SEER.

It would seem to me that getting up to a 15% rebate in the form of a tax credit would be a smart move and the units are getting up there. The tax credit is only good through this year, so we'd need to replace them in the next 6 months to capitalize on it. Yet, part of me says that the units are running fine and I should wait. The old, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" adage.

Can't decide and would appreciate any advice or thoughts.

Much thanks. Nancy
