Product labeling

I've been reading Marion Nestle's book, What to Eat. The contents will do something to your outlook - you'll either decide that you've been eating right all along, or you need to do more variety, or it will scare you out of eating anything at all. She goes into a lot of detail about food processing, especially fruits, vegies, dairy (milk, yogurt and cheese), and meats. Whew. Scary.

So naturally, when I was out on my Sunday morning "food runs" (hitting the 3 grocery stores nearest to me for their on-sale items), I decided to check up on product labeling in both the produce and the meat department, particularly the origin of the item.

I find that in my area, it's hit or miss. Some items are clearly marked "Product of Chili", "Mexico", and even the farm in some cases (strawberries from our local Carlsbad grower). Others, you just wonder where they came from.

How is it in YOUR area? Do you wish you knew where some stuff comes from, or would you rather not?
