Carrier Infinity Qs: Low fan lockout & remote temp sensor

I have a 6 year old Carrier furnace and AC with Infinity controls and have two questions about it. I'm hoping someone here might have the answers.

First, is there any way to lock out the LOW fan speed during AC operation? The system does a great job cooling the house (with the exception of one room, which I will post separately about), but we get stratification between the upstairs and downstairs unless I push the fan from AUTO to MED (at minimum). The design of the second floor trunk is kinda crappy, but we had to work around it. In low, I don't think we are getting the CFMs upstairs we need.

Second, alternatively (or maybe even in conjunction with the first option), is it possible to split or augment the temperature sensor into multiple locations in the house? I'd like to have the AC sensor be upstairs while having he Heating sensor downstairs. I have access to run wires between floors in a location or two, so I considered just running a second set of 4-wire thermostat cable upstairs and moving the thermostat twice a year.

I think you can set the AC to always run at maximum speed which is 400CFM. I have posted a link to the Infinity Installation guide. You need to verify if you have this model. Look at the section under "Setup - Fan Coil".

The draw back of this is you are giving up dehumidification. The AC may also short cycle.

You can add remote sensors to some models of the Infinity Controller. It involves running 22 guage wire. Once you set this up, I don't think you need to move anything. You should be able to reprogram the controller to ignore any remote sensor.

This is great information.

Switching to "efficiency" or "maximum" would seem to make it a little less manual than I do now, which is a good thing. I always have to remember to return the fan to AUTO if I've set it it MED or HIGH earlier in the day.

I wonder if "Dehum airflow" to "HIGH" would also work.

As far as remote sensors go, I have Infinity Model SYSTXCCUID01. I don't see a '-B' at the end, so I hope there isn't that much difference between my unit and the manual. It has pins for remote sensors (S1 and S2).

I am having trouble finding which remote sensors are compatible. It looks like there are two models: 1PZONECCORRSSA and SYSTXCCRRSO1. I am finding conflicting postings as some places say they are interchangeable and some are saying that the 1PZONE is for a zoned system and the SYSTX is for Infinity. I was hoping to find some documentation on the sensors to get the specs on the thermocouples, but have only succeeded in finding eBay auctions and links to ebay auctions. Does anyone have any links to documentation or shed light on which sensor(s) can be used?

the guy who installed it appeared very competent. He said those slp98 furnaces did have lots of issues with sensors and condensation on heat exchanger that was fixed 1.5-2 years ago and now run pretty good... A guy will come and install a temp sensor for free tuesday (was on the original quote) and also install a 5" filter box. No returns yet, i will run for a while first and figure out the best place to add one. I could easily add a return right by the furnace in the basement but i dont think that would be a good idea as all it would do is suck air mostly from the basement not so much from the other 2 returns anymore ... I have the lennox icomfort controller. today it works again. it defaults to the load variable staging thing and in some of the menues the blower output was 970 cfm. this was factory default. not sure why this is, it should blow much harder, but my ducts should handle that well. What a saga this is. I wish there would be one competent guy who just gets it done right without having to be involved with this for months ....

Tiger dunes, show us your numbers. Have you ever tracked customer use? Understanding the experiential base of your comments would help us understand whether to accept or dismiss your claims. Claims about efficiency "if running on low" are hard to reconcile, and cause to question unsupported claims you make. If you have data or anicdotal evidence, please share. PSU, Trane modulates down to 35k or so. This means when load is less than 35k, you basically have an oversized single stage furnace without the heat pump. Knowing when this happens for your house would be very nice. I have a client, 3200 sf 12 year old moderate build quality, 45,000 btu load (60k infinity runs medium stage) at 2f outdoors. Let the equipment tell you, equipment won't lie about load. If you set the pump/furnace switchover properly, the pump will kick in before that point and manage heat replacement down to IT'S minimum output of 1.5 tons before IT effectively becomes oversized single stage. If you are paying 10c/$1 kwh/therm, your breakpoint where gas btu at roughly 90% delivered eff meets your pump is probably between 20-25f. Your dealer should have an equipment specific calculator for this.

Thanks, for the replies. I specifically asked about the existing duct work, and all three said it's fine. Actually the noise is probably due to our trying to compensate for the temperature differences between upstairs and down... we have to mostly close the downstairs vents to push enough air upstairs to get the temperature half-way decent. Perhaps with the VS unit running longer, we could open the downstairs vents more and eliminate that problem. It sounds like 2-stage is out simply because it would be too big for our house. Regarding thermostat, he indicated the programmable Edge should provide everything we need and from what I've read, it should include ability to control humidity. But you raise some good points. It sounds like I need to verify a thermidistat is being included... is this a separate sensor, or part of the thermostat itself and I just need to ensure I'm getting the right model (perhaps TP-PRH)? Regarding dryness from outside air infiltration... our house is pretty tight, but this could be coming from the windows... I'm also looking to replace them with more energy efficient vinyl replacements, so that may help that situation as well. I think I'll hold off on the humidifier until the HVAC and windows have been replaced, and then evaluate. Regarding tigerdune's comment about 80% furnace... if I recall the discussion regarding this proposal, the 96 was required to qualify for tax credit. If I were to opt for the hybrid, could this qualify based on the heat pump rating alone? Thanks, Brian

Reading this thread has reaffirmed my decision to upsize the Greenspeed per Carrier's recommendation based on my cooling load. I could have went either way: 3 or 4-ton with my heat load. Too bad they don't make a 3.5 ton, it would have been the perfect size. Last year's polar vortex in NY Long Island really pushed me into the 4-ton. The way I figure the unit will only go into defrost mode below 8-10F. I also have 300sqft of window space, three huge doors and a fireplace. No matter how much my thermal envelope is tightened there will still be leakage in this 75 year-old home. My biggest disappointment so far with the 4-ton is it only reduces its speed to 50% vs 40% for the 3 and 5-ton units. The information across the Internet is just plain wrong on that one. We're charting in brand new territory still, so hope I've added somewhat to the pool of information. Otherwise this unit is *way* better than my wildest expectations. The comfortability factor is way better than my single-stage and well worth the additional cost. I'd go even as far as to say perfect. We had a huge heat snap for two days 65% humidity and temps into the upper eighties still at 80F past midnight. I only used $3.15 for the entire day vs. almost $11 for a similar temp period last year. I also credit my new Sunrise windows with lots of the improvement. At full load the system was using approximately 1150W. It only went up to 70% usage for a very brief period at night. More importantly I could easily maintain rock solid 45% humidity at 73F. Not enough data to really extrapolate much else. The system is so quiet my neighbors asked why I hadnÃ¢ÂÂt turned it on yet. :) The real test will be this winter though. I just went into the settings for my Infinity. They were a tad different than I expected from the manual. My setup options were:

THERMOSTAT
FURNACE
AC

I do not see an option labeled "Fan Coil".

AC had:

COOLING LOCKOUT: NONE
HIGH COOL LATCH: NONE

FURNACE had:

FURNACE AIRFLOW: COMFORT
AC AIRFLOW: MAXIMUM
DEHUM AIRFLOW: NORMAL

I changed DEHUM AIRFLOW to "HIGH" to see if that makes a difference.
