Not that I think I'm hot, but I've gotten a couple of requests from people I don't know from Adam (it's always a dead giveaway if we have no mutual Facebook Friends), and I can only assume that, because my profile is private, they've just seen my pic and decided, for whatever reason, to put a request out there. Maybe they're spammers. Maybe they're lonely. Maybe they're weirdos. Anyway, if I don't know who the heck they are, I just click "ignore" on their request. I may be wrong, but I think you can put a "block" against this guy to keep him from continually trying to make contact with you.

Facebook is weird. On the one hand, it's a nice way to keep in contact with a number of family members that I don't ordinarily correspond with on a daily basis. I've enjoyed sending my aunt, cousin, and brothers regular messages/updates and receiving theirs as well. On the other hand, I've gotten in touch with quite a few people that I grew up with, and some of them are just ... different. I've got a couple of FB friends who regularly post status updates and it's always scripture. Always. Don't get me wrong - I have nothing against scripture and people of faith, but if I want to read the Bible, I know where mine is. ;-)

I would just ignore it, if I don't know them I just ignore. I have both FB and myspace, but I hardly check myspace anymore, he may be a mutual friend of one of your friends or something? Or maybe you have the same first and last name of someone he knows? BTW, be careful w/ fb there's a bad virus going around through it, one of my cousins got it, and I keep getting stuff from her that I have to delete b/c its a virus.

Check Snopes.com for facts re Facebook "virus" scares. The latest thing going around (as of yesterday) is that the Facebook Fan Check application contains a virus. Not true. As stated in the link, Fan Check is not a virus - just a crappy application. Big difference. ;-)

Jen - Ha oh my. I guess there are people in the world that want to meet new people and chat online (decorating forum!). I just always considered facebook to really be just a place where you request people you know!! I believe I'll do the block thing. I found it weird that it's from the same person, months later. How does that work if you ignore someone? Do they receive a message saying that? I just wanted to know what this guy would say if I sent him a message calling him out. I'm sure I'll be able to sleep tonight if I don't though.

Ah yes, the status updates. . . I have a few people on my list from high school or growing up that I know more about now than ever before! I know what they eat, when they're shopping, what their kid just did, etc.

Polly - I was thinking maybe a mutual friend also but I'm not seeing the connection. My profile is private but maybe my name does match someone he knows. That's the other reason I had thought about sending the message.

AJ that wasn't the one I was referring to. The virus my cousin got was an attached link in a message that she clicked on and it infected her computer, in turn it is sending the same link to all her friends. I have seen a lot of status updates w/ the fan application thing though.

And yes, I know more about some people in HS who I haven't seen in close to twenty years, than I did back then thanks to FB. Don't ya think some of the status updates are completely ridiculous?

Well, my status update one day was "Your son Rip is on line toot", so I guess I shouldn't really cast aspersions on others. ;-)

Have you done a facebook/google search of your name to see how many others there might be? My name is pretty common.

These days, I would wonder if he was really a she at one time. It could also be a distant relative.. with me, I'm not sure how many people realize I'm not using my real (married) last name. I know people that have fake names up. Then the last is that you never know your true background. You would not believe how many stories I am hearing that people are finding out their father is not their birth father or that they were adopted.

I would be curious and accept or contact them, this would allow me to decline/end contact.

I've been on Facebook for about a year now. I love it for keeping my family up to date since we live far away from one another. I also love it to find old friends.

It's quite possible that this guy is requesting you because your name pops up on "friend suggestions" over on the right side. There are many ways for friend suggestions to occur. The good thing about Facebook is that it helps people to find each other by comparing email lists and friend lists all the time. I get friend suggestions of people that my parents know, other friends know etc. but I have never met them. So it could very well be innocent.

BUT...that said, there are also lots of weirdos and stalkers out there. Is your Myspace page public? He could have stumbled upon that and now wants to get to know you better. Especially with all your band and music connections. I would be very suspicious. Whatever you do....DON'T send him a message. If you respond, he has 24 hours of free access to your profile page. Just block his name and be done with him.

I find it very odd how FB makes friend suggestions; one of them was the partner of a guy I rented a house in Florida from ; the only contact I ever had with the partner was one email he sent me with restaurant suggestions.
Weird that facebook would suggest him to me as a friend unless they would have seen my email list.

I only have 7 friends ; and I've had 10 requests, all ignored.

I don't know how people take it if I ignore them; are they miffed ?

I had the chance to explain it to one friend and she understood my reasons.

Mitch, you can remain friends with someone, but choose "Hide" so that you don't have to see their status updates/wall posts. I've done that with a couple of friends who annoy me, but I hesitate (for various reasons) to delete.

I've had a few "suggestions" of people who are not on any of my friends FB lists. But they may be connected to me via email lists as Mitch pointed out. There is definite sharing of email lists within FB. I think when you first sign up, it asks whether it can access your email address book. Plus, all kinds of applications and polls ask if it's okay to access your address book. I'm sure I've clicked yes somewhere and that's how it starts. So far it hasn't been a problem but I'm very leery of adding someone unless I'm 100% sure who they are.

Facebook navigating is a subject that is fascinating. It becomes very tricky if/when you need to dump someone.

I would just ignore- or leave it hanging in the ethernet- that is what I did until I finally friended the person when I decided to start use my facebook for work. I also have to hide the news feed from some old highschool friends and relatives. I used to think I was the oldest person on facebook until my uncle friended me- he is 82! and yes he has wayyyy more facebook friends than I do! I do have a facebook friend from here!
I don't have myspace tho. I am on linkdin. I do have a twitter account and even some followers. I have no earthly idea who they are or why they are following. I havn't "tweeted" for weeks! I got two new followers yesterday!
We are learning the social networking applications to use in our association to attract younger members.

I just joined FB and don't think it's for me. So far I find it a bit freaky.

When I first signed up it proposed a list of potential new friends. Most were people I actually know or could figure out the link to me. A few I can't figure out who they are or why we would be/should be potential friends. The oddest suggestion was the doctor that delivered my 31 yo nephew (who is on FB)! I need to ask my nephew - are you actually FB friends with the guy that delivered you??? And how in the world, and why, did you re-connect?

If them being connected isn't the link to me, then I am doubly freaked out that this person's name would pop up as a potential friend to me.

I do wonder about the few that actually request to be my friend, not just the random suggestions FB generates. If I don't know the name or recognize the picture I just hit ignore but I can't help but wonder - who are they & why did they specifically contact me to friend me?

I haven't taken the time to play around with it yet so maybe I'll have a different take on it a bit later. As a matter of fact, I should go look at it right now.

I joined a while back, don't remember why, never posted a pic or anything, and I *still* get friend requests from people I've never met.

Odd but I don't bother with it.

My kids all have FB, as do my siblings and eldest nephew. Also some extended relatives. FB is the only way I can keep up with my kids! And I love that I can keep up with extended family. We've been sharing photos and stories and it's really nice.

I've had a few requests from HS chums, but I mostly just hide them...it's been 30 years and we've not got much in common.

But I do like it far better than Myspace. So, yeah, I'm kind of a FB junkie. I also get odd suggestions and the weird request here and there, but I generally ignore them.

I did get some messages from a random guy...we lived in the same town years ago and have lived in the same cities over the years, but have never met one another. Kind of a small world thing. And I've gotten a few questions asking if I'm related to a certain person or other, but nothing really weird, and they've not asked to be my friend.

Most of the time, FB suggests people who might have you in their email address books, or that you have a certain number of friends in common. It's not magic, it's algorithms. When I joined, everyone in my combined address books got a friend request, and most of them added me, even though we've never met in meat space. I think most people do the same.

I find it interesting if a friend of mine comments on someone else's photo that that person isn't on my friend list, I can still click on that nonfriend's pic. It will show up along the side saying "so and so commented on so and so's photo". You can go through that person's full album. I'm sure there's settings but I every time I think I have them figured out someone tags me or something. I give up.

I don't like that people can tag me in a photo. I thought I changed the settings so it couldn't be done but my aunt had some real doozie pics of me she tagged and then anyone on your list gets to see them. I mean I looked horrible in these photos. Wowzers. I deleted them but I'm sure they were already seen!!

As far as the friend request thing, I thought you actually had to hit "friend request" . FB is always showing friend suggestions or people you might know but I would have to click on them to actually have them as a "friend"..

Cooper - Ha my Dad and two Aunts have FB. Dad recently wrote something all gushy parent like on my wall. "I'm very proud of you..blah, blah.." :) He even throws some nick names around that I'd rather other people not know. Ah, well.

While we're admitting to FB, how many of you guys take the quizzes? Or take the time to do the cow farm thing or mafia wars. I don't understand the point of either but my sister and bil do the farm thing at times. lol Once in a blue moon I'll take a quiz.

Don't do the quizzes, don't do mafia wars, bejeweled, or farmville- and it's annoying how it fills up my newsfeed. FB is like the newspaper of my family and friends, a great way to keep in touch w/ everyone. But it's the internet, you have to be weary of the nuts out there.

Yes it's a glitch that people can see your page for 24 hours if you respond to a message from them in your inbox. Last I heard they were going to fix that. I know a new version of FB is in Beta form right now and much of what people complain about will be fixed.

If you want to stop people from seeing tagged photos of you, go to Privacy, then Profile, then "Photos tagged of me" and click "customize" click the box that says "only me" on who can see the pictures. ;c)

I do some of the quizzes but rarely post them to my wall. I don't play any of the games or do Mafia wars. I started to click "hide" on the friends that are filling up my page with mafia wars. It's insane.

I also NEVER post controversial stuff like politics. That's just a recipe for disaster to me.

Interesting point about politics. My brother-in-law posted something about a radio personality on the opposite end of the political spectrum. It was relatively mild, but a "friend" of his retaliated by posting a rather derogatory comment about BIL's political affiliation. That got my husband (BIL's twin) riled up, and he posted something more inflammatory still.

Well, the peeved guy then texted my BIL a threatening message! Needless to say, my BIL notified the police, and unfriended the guy (who was an acquaintance he had made through a sports team).

So--I heartily agree that it's best to be cautious about posting controversial stuff.

I hide certain people (who post objectionable stuff on their FB pages) so they do not appear on my feed. I also hide all games, quizzes, polls, etc. so I don't have to look at those.

I'm just interested in friendly palaver and sharing photos with my dear family members and friends--many of whom have different political, social, and religious orientations to my own.
