If you read this would you find it offensive?
Comments (34)Natal, I find it very interesting that you call ME out for use of a word in reference to MYSELF instead of one of the several other people in this thread who have used the same word to describe other people in a more negative fashion. Yes, I do call myself a redneck, in the same sense as comedian Jeff Foxworthy's "You Might Be A Redneck If..." (which fits most of my family to a T, and me too, to a level that many of you would find rather surprising). There's a great deal of his material on YouTube too, just put "Foxworthy" in the search box. For many years I was very ashamed of my background and lower-class family - who do quite gleefully refer to themselves as "rednecks" - until I decided to accept them and join others in reclaiming the word with humor and affection. (Contrary to popular belief, rednecks are not confined to the Southern US.) Many ethnic groups are now using normally-pejorative slurs as humorous in-group terms - see Carlos Mencia's use of the word "beaner" to refer to his Mexican heritage, but a non-Mexican person calling a Mexican a "beaner" would be considered very insulting. That's the point of in-group slang. Several times now you have interpreted tongue-in-cheek comments of mine as being serious ones (and often being rather snotty to me in the process). I shouldn't have to put smileys on everything I say, so perhaps you should just skip my posts....See MoreCompromising your own privacy, Twitter, Facebook.
Comments (60)Birthing photos are now a big thing on Facebook. I'm talking babies covered in yuck. Some even show crowning shots, with the mother's anatomy up close and personal. These aren't a few extreme cases either; it's a trend. And the photos are widely shared, not private. They get lots of Likes. What's especially disturbing--besides the obvious--is the way these posters don't recognize any right to react to their photos with anything except admiration. No one ever dares to object, because they know what would happen. "Don't be a hater. What's wrong with you? No one is offended by this!" So the poster thinks everybody approves. And the trend spreads. This is a classic characteristic of narcissists: the inability to recognize that other people and their viewpoints even exist as part of objective, independent reality. But we do exist. And we judge. Good luck getting a job from me in the future after I've seen your business in all its glory....See MoreOffensive Terms/Phrases in Posts
Comments (150)As you probably already know, I'm white, Southern, straight, married, 65, and have always considered myself privileged, even though my household never had any money to speak of. I was privileged because: - I grew up in a house where people were gentle and loving to each other. - I was raised with music and books and games and some lovely old things to use every day. - I was taught things that have helped me to navigate relatively successfully through life. All very nice. But the real and underlying privilege of my circumstances was that I was protected by the system and by the law. Had I been a different color, that would not necessarily have been the case. Had I not been straight, or blessed with a quick mind, or reasonably attractive, I would not have been able to move so easily through the world. And had I not been "one of us," there would have been many gracious and sometimes powerful institutions into which I would not have been invited. So when I hear "privileged" used as a pejorative, I think that the speaker must mean "entitled." Privilege is a gift that is accidental, not earned. Entitlement, in my view, indicates an abdication of the responsibilities that come with privilege - the responsibility to keep an open mind and a kind heart; to share the wealth of privilege, whether it's money or access or knowledge; to stay on the right side of the line between discernment and judgment; to respect the person even if you don't like the behavior; to be tolerant of differences and intolerant of unfairness; and to protect, with whatever power your position grants you, the right of every person to equal treatment and equal protection under the law. I wish I lived up to those responsibilities all the time, but I know them, and that's part of my privilege, too. So I am right there with olychick when she says that it is those of us on the safe side of the river who must build the bridges....See MoreFriends with future SD on Facebook?
Comments (5)I think Ima's idea of two personal facebook pages is likely the way to go. None of the child's business what is on your 'adult' page, but refusing to befriend because of this might set up hurt feelings. Actually it could be considered an 'honor' to be asked by the future SD. She wants to include you and her father in her 'social life'. You could upset up a page that is husband and you together (besides the individual pages) and just use the joint one for pics of your family events, shout outs to between you all blah blah. Keep it 'family' focused. You can still be you and do as you please on your individual one...no need to edit and/or be afraid to socialize as you please. Just kinda remind 'Dad' that if you/he can set up multi facebook accounts, it won't be long before SD learns how to too if she has a mind to. Hope her mother seriously keeps on eye on her. kids do stupid things and can be very naive even while thinking they are all grown up and know it all....See MoreRelated Professionals
