I just finished making a hat and scarf for my daughter in a basketweave pattern. It uses a K5, P5 pattern, but I think you could easily adapt it. Or even leave it the same, that should still look fine. I used black microspun and edged it in black fun fur, but I'm sure it will still look fine without the fun fur.

this is a great pattern since you can alter it using any yarn for any size. I don't knit but they also have the pattern in crochet and that's what I used. Hope this helps.

Prof Susan, I love that pattern to make baby hats to match any baby sweater I make. I sometimes skip the pompon and make a cluster of yarn curls as the topknot for a girl. Yarn curls will be sturdier when washing the hat.
