Has Your Weather Changed?

It is now 48 out and we are to get some windy weather. I see no snow left on the ground from last week, when it was down around six above. How is your weather today?

This state and our area is experiencing most unusual weather this winter due to the lack of snow --so far. Yes we have had below 0, but also experienced 61 in Dec. But NO one is complaining except the snowmobile people and the skiers. It truly has been a blessing to the construction industry
Right now in ND it is 4 above and the sun is out.

Last Friday into Saturday, the weather was 'frightful'. We got about 6" of the fluffy stuff. It got up to almost 40 yesterday and was melting nicely. Then rain/thunder moved in last night, into this morning. Now at least 95% of the snow is gone.....leaving small 'lakes' here and there, due to the combo of warm temps and hard rains. Right now it's in the low 50s, with wind, and the sun is shining brightly.

Dry all last year and the beginning of this year (except for a 2ft snowstorm in Feb) until the last week of May when we got a month's worth of rain in 1 week. Alternating cold(30's) then hot (90) then cold (40's) temps in May and June, finally got tomatoes out the beginning of June and MORE rain! Poured for about 20 minutes at dinner last night, weather.com is showing 0 inches but I'm guessing 1/4". More gentle rain overnight, clear this morning and then this afternoon another T-storm. So I'm saying 7.5 -8" this month plus the 3.5" last week of May. Tomatoes are looking sad - I started replacing some yesterday and also planted 6 I'd been holding back. Haven't checked today to see how they've held up in the driving rain (had a couple broken last week). Peppers are still in 6-packs, I guess I can say they're hardened off though they may sunburn when I can get them out, 1 is blooming. Squash looks like it's loving this weather, cukes OK (seeded before squash and they're smaller), spinach is bolting and the kale and Asian greens are just OK. I guess I'll try to harvest mustard greens, tatsoi and bok choy for stirfry mix rather than salad greens since lettuce is so far behind. Carrots are disappearing, lettuce is barely coming in after seeding twice (every time I seed we have a downpour) but the arugula in the mix is getting tall (not bolting yet). Radish bulbs are finally starting to show above the ground 3 weeks after seeding and I don't know what's happened to my chard and beets that I've seeded twice. Beans are doing OK, but I lost 2/3 of my edamame. The only thing I'm harvesting right now that is doing really well is strawberries and they're coming to an end just as market season is beginning. Blueberries and brambles are coming along though.

Cooler weather is indeed best for transplanting . I need to move and transplant some raspberries that spread by runners and are getting in the pathway. I have a few blackberry bushes that die back every winter but sprout back through the roots and they never produce. I either need to move them to a more protected area or dig them up and give them away. I was expecting a shipment of a few currant bushes this week that I ordered a week and a half ago, but I received a call from the nursery and sadly they will not be shipped out until next week. The weather should still be cool enough for planting.. Wild native blueberries are the best. So full of flavor and nutrients. . We have them growing in our forest and along the river banks. It is hard to get to them before the bears and other wildlife find them.. We bought 20 Bluecrop blueberry bushes from a gentleman that works with my husband. Someone gave him 400 bushes that were dug up from his property that used to be a blueberry farm. I transplanted them in containers Wednesday morning while it was sprinkling outside. He offered to give us more if they do poorly. Most of them had some pretty good roots still attached. They are in the shade for now. Most of the rhubarb is ready to pick now. The strawberries are blooming pretty heavy.. I have one Red Lake currant that is loaded with fruit along with blueberries and sour cherries. How do you like the chokeberries taste? We have native plants all around us but I have never tried them.

Hi everyone. Thanks again so much for all your comments. I really appreciate it. Today I met with my GC to review the numbers again in more detail. I definitely decided against doing the big remodel. (as others could have predicted, moving walls etc are not a good ROI--they are an expense). I may do some sort of kitchen or bath facelift or "botox" since there's no guarantee I'm moving right away. If my 2-3 years stretches to 5-7, it might be nice to have some updates. We'll see. FWIW, he told me two things I thought you might find interesting: 1) right now, the cost of materials is very high, and rising all the time, like month to month, due, in part, to all the natural disasters: hurricanes, the fires in Sonoma, CA and the mudslides south of Santa Barbara, etc. These people are without homes, (and rebuilding is largely being funded by insurance) so this demand is not going away until the houses are rebuilt. 2) he confirmed that even if the economy takes a downturn, labor rates are not likely to go down right away. My neighbor had guessed a year. My GC said after the 2008 recession, he still had plenty of work until 2011. He didn't feel it at all. This guy comes highly regarded, so my guess is that the good contractors will be the last to feel the pinch of a recession. For my project, if I do something small-ish, there doesn't seem to be any point in waiting a year or so to time the market. But as everyone here has said, if I may move in 2-3 years, the best option might be to do nothing or...try some decorating magic. Thanks again everyone! I feel so much better!

I have lived within 100 miles of my birthplace going on 70 years. What I've observed is not the weather changing so much but a shift in seasonal weather. As a child I was having backyard pool parties for my March birthday in an unheated pool. Before I became school aged, by March I was swimming in the Russian River where I would stay with my grandmother from the time the river receded after winter rain to mid September. Now Spring comes later and so do the other seasons, weather wise. One of the things that started to annoy me years ago was the shift to starting school before Labor Day when we are still in midsummer. When I was a child we sweltered in school by late May and unless we had an Indian summer by mid Sept. things began to cool down. We have also always had years of drought followed by a year of two of stormy wet weather. What has changed is a larger population and water being redirected to desert communities. It's not climate change, it's overpopulation and communities that should never have been built in areas that didn't have the infrastructure and resources to support them.

No sun out here and the temperature is now dropping from 48 down to 41. Sprinkles too.

Snow.... Snow..... and more Snow! But about 32 degrees warmer than the highs at the end of last week. The temp right now, and today's expected high, is 32 degrees.

No snow here in NW Florida! It's currently 74 degrees and quite cloudy. It's so humid that water is falling from the trees like rain. Rain is supposed to move in this evening.

Snow Friday night. Cold and wind Sat. Some sun yesterday. Today started windy and sunny, and is now cloudy, but still windy. Supposed to be a high of 49 F. today, then in the 30's, windy and snow tomorrow. North central Ohio. Yuck! Oh, and the snow has all melted except for the piles from the snow plows in the parking lots.

We've had almost no rain this fall and winter. Not good. Finally today we are getting rain. Yay! In the words of Etta James....."At Last."

We are finally getting some rain.....it has been a very dry year.
Our hills are usually very green starting in December and they are brown. But it won't take long for them to "green up"

Way too hot for January...it's 79 here in Ft Lauderdale. I prefer it around 65 to 70-ish. Last night it was 72 when I checked online at 2 am. I wouldn't mind a rainy day...haven't seen one in a LONG time.
