Final questions before Trane purchase

I have narrowed the bids to two Trane quotes for a 5 ton split system with the XR 15 (4TTR5060). Both dealers are quoting XR 95 furnace (TUH1C100A9481A). Is there a significant difference between the single speed XR quoted and the variable speed XV in this application? Should I go with the XV and how much more should that upgrade cost?

One dealer has quoted a Trane stat and the other a programable White-Rodgers. Does it matter which?

Finally, one dealer says a 4 to 5" media filter ($250) should only be used with the XV but he would not recommend it because it would drastically restrict air flow. ???

where do you want me to start?

1.you can not achieve the performance/eff capability of the XR15 AC condenser without a furnace that has VS blower like the XV95.

2.you have been quoted a 5 ton AC condenser. Therefore you need a furnace that has a 5 ton rated blower. The model you were quoted does not. On the XR95, you would need the following mdl TUH1D100A9601A that has the five ton rated blower.

3.The XV95 is a nicer furnace. two stg output with VS blower.

4.on stats, the XR95 would require a 1 heat/1 cool stat capability. If you stepped up to the two stg VS XV95, you would require a stat like Trane's 803 or identical HW equivalent that has two stg capability.

5.I would recommend a good 4-5" pleated filter media cabinet like Trane's Perfect Fit or Honeywell 200. That's pure unadulterated nonsense about the airflow issue.

6.what coil is dealer proposing? ask dealer to provide an AHRI number for system he quoted.

Airflow can be an issue when installing air cleaners. Generally speaking, the variable speed furnaces will deliver rated airflow at higher static pressures than furnaces w/out var speed motors. In some instances it is not an issue. The Trane media cleaner will increase the static pressure at least .2 in this case. If the current system has a static in the .7 range already, this could be a problem for the non-var speed furnace. At a .9 total static, the XR furnace will deliver around 1750 cfm and the XV (I think it is modulating now and not two-stage) will still deliver around 1950 cfm. If the airflow is critical, the 1/2 ton of cooling difference could be a problem.

thanks for responding- i am talking about a desktop- i do not want a laptop at this time. I guess i thought a router was only for wireless computers- so if i get the wireless card does that mean i then have to get a wireless internet plan or will the wireless card and router work with the regular dsl? For about a year the computers will be by each other and after that they will be on different levels of the house.. So is there a preferable way of how i should go meaning hard wire or wireless? And does whichever way i chose determine what kind of router i need to get or are they all the same? So this also leads me to a question and that is how will i know if my current printer will be compatible with the new computer? i only ask because i heard people had that issue with Vista. I also want to ask about the antivirus programs you are referring too. I have always used AVG..can i still use this on windows 7 or do i need to stick with the ones you are referring to. Thanks again

Mbwaldrp If you the homeowner want to independently control humidity setting in AC cooling, then the preferred thermostat is Honeywell Vision Pro IAQ that has "dehumidify on demand" feature. With this stat, comfort r setting is disabled. Second choice would be Trane or AmStd 803 or identical HW 8321 that makes the Trane stat. Comfort R setting is used with this stat. Before I made any changes, you need to take some humidity readings at several different areas in your home at different times of the day. There are too many variables to make a good and accurate answer to your final question. I will say this. If you don't have zoning controls for controlling temperature Between first and second floor, you can expect a temperature differential of up to 10 degrees. This can depend on ductwork design/sizing, insulation/building qualities,whether you have damper control between airflow to first/second floor, and where the thermostat is located. IMO IMO

I'm still waiting for a response from the Contractor, who has been sick the last few days, and I am still pushing for the HW Vision Pro IAQ Stat to be installed. Another question. I am thinking about going with the Air Handler with Heat Strips as the backup system to the Heatpump, instead of having the Gas Furnace. The main reasons for going with the Air Handler and Heat Strips is because the Effeciency ratings are actually higher for the Heatpumps with this configuration, and according to the Contractor the Air Handler and Heat Strips are less complex and should have fewer problems. My question is two fold. 1 - Do you agree with that statement and do you think going with the Air Handler and Heat Strips over the Gas Furnace is a good idea? 2 - Any feedback on what we can expect for the Heat that the Heat Strips put out, vs what we would have with the Gas Furnace? My wife is not thrilled with the so called "Heat" from our existing Heatpump, but that should be better with these new Heatpumps. But she Loves the Warmth of the Gas Furnace when that kicks in, and she wants to make sure that we aren't giving that up by going with Heat Strips vs the Gas Furnace. So any additional advice and input would be greatly appreciated since we have no experience with Air Handlers and Heat Strips as a backup heat source. Thanks!

David: In defrost mode, the reversing valve actuates (you will hear a "swoosh" noise as it changes from heating to cooling), the air conditioning cycle operates to heat the outside unit and melt any frost. The outside fan does NOT run when in defrost. Once the defrost cycle is complete, the reversing valve actuates and the condenser fan comes on. You may indeed see water vapor (not steam - not enough heat to make steam) rise above the condenser. Note that during defrost, cold refrigerant is sent to the indoor coil. To compensate, your aux electric strips will run while in defrost. The air temperature coming out of the supply vents will not be as warm when the defrost cycle is running (maybe in the mid 70's as compared to 90's when not in defrost mode). My Goodman has time-initiated defrost - I can choose between 30, 60, and 90 minutes. Not sure about your XL14i - it may have "demand defrost" which is more hi tech. Best to you.
