My DH is. Carbs have to be limited as well as fat intake.

Rice, potatoes, corn, peas, lima beans, grits, milk and fruits and sweets are all carbs. There are others but these are the ones I can think of right now.

Even sugar free desserts have to be limited becasue of the carbs.

If your DH is overweight, just losing 10-15 pounds will decrease the chance of developing full diabetis.

Knowing what to eat can be confusing. Everywhere you turn, there is news about what is or isn't good for you. Some basic principles have weathered the fad diets, and have stood the test of time. Here are a few tips on making healthful food choices for you and your entire family.

Eat lots of vegetables and fruits. Try picking from the rainbow of colors available to maximize variety. Eat non-starchy vegetables such as spinach, carrots, broccoli or green beans with meals.
Choose whole grain foods over processed grain products. Try brown rice with your stir fry or whole wheat spaghetti with your favorite pasta sauce.
Include dried beans (like kidney or pinto beans) and lentils into your meals.
Include fish in your meals 2-3 times a week.
Choose lean meats like cuts of beef and pork that end in "loin" such as pork loin and sirloin. Remove the skin from chicken and turkey.
Choose non-fat dairy such as skim milk, non-fat yogurt and non-fat cheese.
Choose water and calorie-free "diet" drinks instead of regular soda, fruit punch, sweet tea and other sugar-sweetened drinks.
Choose liquid oils for cooking instead of solid fats that can be high in saturated and trans fats. Remember that fats are high in calories. If you're trying to lose weight, watch your portion sizes of added fats.
Cut back on high calorie snack foods and desserts like chips, cookies, cakes, and full-fat ice cream.
Eating too much of even healthful foods can lead to weight gain. Watch your portion sizes.

Is his Dr a specialist, or have knowledge of this disease. Telling him he is borderline is just plain dumb. He needs to be told why, given information, talk to a nutrionist etc. Taking him off bread and sugar is not a wise decision. My DH has been a diabetic for 40 years and insulin dependent due to open heart surger and cancer.
He has NEVER been on a so called diabetic diet. He has to watch pasta, cheese and pies. He uses Splenda in limitation. Is he overweight? Loosing weight helps as a walking program, but he needs to get a good checkup--heart, valves, breathing etc.
There is many sources avaiable. Good Housekeeping, Mayo Clinic, but do watch organizations like American Diabetic Assos. Did get their magazine for several years, but yes some the articles were ok, but did not like most of there receipes and they sure bug you for money.
Diabetic cookbooks==don't even own one. Most receipes can be altered with common sense. Watch carbs and calories and go step by step. Go to the library and check out the magazines. He will be fine, but do have a stress test. This is very important.

I have type 2 diabetes,and have to monitor my blood sugar a couple of times a day.Everyone's body is different,but I've found that white starches..ie..white potatoes,pasta,and rice are what elevates my sugar the most.
I can even get away with a sugary treat without my sugars going up,but a plain baked potato sends it soaring.
Only by monitoring your blood sugar often and making a list of what you eat,are you going to find out what actually triggers a sugar peak.
Does your hubby monitor his blood sugar daily?My DH is borderline,so I try to get him to test his also at least once a day.
It's important to know what your triggers are,so that you can avoid them as much as possible.
Mine have been out of whack with all the holiday foods,but hopefully now that all the feasting on rich foods is over,I can get them back to normal.
BTW,next to your diet,exercise is the most important thing to getting your sugars under control!

Oranges give you a lot of sugars. You'll be surprised what foods turn to sugar.

Most doctors will send you to an educational class that your insurance should cover. Ours covers for the person who has diabeties and your spouse or someone who will be helping you with your eating.

If you can go to the education class, take advantage of it...It gives you a lot of information

I am borderline too. I developed gestational diabetes in my second pregnancy. I craved donuts like a mad woman. Now that i know the warning signs i can feel when the diabetes is knocking on my door. Losing some weight is very helpful. When i put weight on i can feel the diabetes more often. I also use cinnamon throughout the day. Cinnamon is a natural blood sugar stabalizer. DH puts it on his oatmeal and in his Cheerios in the morning. I like drinking protein shakes during the day. When i mix the chocolate shakes i sprinkle cinnamon in it. I really love the way it tastes. Give it a try.

BTW,my Dr gave me a list of foods to avoid...what foods to be eaten in moderation and foods that are the best!
Whole grain breads,were one of the good foods.Since I don't care for plain white bread,this was fine with me.
I think we have to look at each individual food and use the "bad"ones in tiny quanities!

Yep, I am, was diagnosed the same as your hubby 6 or 7 years ago and controlled it by diet but it progressed and I am now diabetic. The first thing I did was eliminate everything white from my diet except for cauliflower. Then I enrolled in a 3 week class offered by our local hospital, met with a nutrionist and learned how to manage the disease. If your husband is not seeing an endocronologist I encourage him to do so. Some physicians (not saying yours is one of them) just don't give this disease the respect it truly deserves. It is serious but is easily managed with knowledge.

I slowly added various foods into my diet, things like spaghetti, breads, potatoes, even cakes and desserts. But I learned how to manage them, what to combine with them to keep my sugar levels where they need to be or what to do to counteract them (the answer is exercise). So that candy bar has a price....30 minutes on the treadmill!

Citrus is one of the safest fruits for me. When I was trying to figure out what I could eat I ate it then checked my sugar levels in 90 minutes, again 30 minutes later. If it was too high then I had my answer, eat in moderation. Get him to a nutritionist, they are invaluable and if he goes to a diabetic class it is often free.

I managed my husband's type II diabetes, without meds, by using these guidelines...for each meal. I first discussed with rep from diabetic care at the hospital, and she agreed
that it agreed with American Diabetic guidelines.

carbs - 50%
Protein - 30%
Fat - 20%

No one food item is taboo...it's all about balance.
Select the protein, establish calorie counts by using info from food cans, boxes. etc or charts from one of many sources.

Then, fill in with fat and carbs.

Type 2 diabetes, but controlled with insulin as I am allergic to all of the "diabetes" meds used to help control it.

"Borderline" diabetes is like being "a little" pregnant. You either have it or not.

Also, has he taken any new medications in the last three months? Cortisone shot? Allergy meds? Both of those sent my sugar into the 130-140 range and wouldn't budge, regardless of diet for three months. After three months, I am back down to the 90-115 range, higher on days after I eat things I shouldn't. And I don't watch all that carefully what I am eating, tho I do have to watch popcorn at night. Some things trigger higher sugar for one person and not another. Carb count throughout the day doesn't seem to work for me. I can have the same portion, same meal at lunch and dinner and still have it higher after dinner. Same amt of exercise. When it was up, I was checking before each meal. Now I check it in the morning before eating or drinking. Both of my parents are diabetic, plus several others in the family had or have it. Take the classes, then follow what works for your DH, just don't take everything they tell you as gospel, as every body reacts differently.
