Do y'all have any travelers?

DD#2, her DH and 2 youngest daughters are in Akumal, Mexico. DGD#1 is currently on a plane en route to Cancum w/ about 8 friends that all just graduated. DS and DGS#2 and the new girlfriend are leaving tomorrow for New Braunfels, Tx. to ride the river, and my niece and her DD are going to France Monday!! Geez!! Doesn't anybody stay home anymore? DH and I got home from San Antonio last night.

Y'all got family traveling?

Vannie, that's alot of protection prayers going around the universe... lol Sounds like alot of fun trips though!

Nope no one traveling that I know of..
My brother will be in town today, but he only lives 5 hrs away...my mom might be heading up here next weekend or the weekend after from N Hollywood for a job interview to get her back in WA..

Hi Mike, nice to meet some other Okie plumie lovers! Thanks for the advice, I really appreciate it. Somehow I just knew y'all were going to tell me to cut it into pieces. Yikes, I'm scared-lol. Should I try to make the cuts and root it now or should I do as Moonie suggests and wait until spring? I have to admit, I did go to Southwoods and buy another plumie last week. A miniature Divine this time. Didn't want to take the chance of growing another monster-lol. I've also been eyeballing a Scentsational in full bloom. It smells good enough to eat but I'm not ready to spend $80 on a plumie. I went back today just to smell it and talk myself out of it for the 3rd time. I'd love to have the name of any local nursery that sells plumies! Moonie, thanks for the advice ! I appreciate getting help from plumeria growers with more experience and know-how than I have.

There was a program on Channel 13 not too long ago, titled "Change Your Brain, Change Your Life". If you can get the book or DVD or whatever, by all means do so; it's a real eye-opener. Dr Daniel Amen (pronounced Ame-en), the psychiatrist/brain expert who hosted it dished out an amazing amount of solid information about the brain, how our diets & lifestyles affect our brains, & *how our brains are the most important 'things'* for our health & quality of life. He showed brainscan images of healthy brains & not-healthy brains, & said that the researchers had to scan 3000 people to get images of 90 healthy brains! The non-healthy brains were dramatically, disasterously damaged by alcohol, Alzheimers, smoking, crack cocaine, stroke, heart attack, inhalation of toxic fumes (don't go to work painting cars!), & probably some other stuff. The markers for brain health were diet, exercise, & refraining from bad stuff. Diet was to include fish & fish oil (people who live in countries where lots of fish is consumed have much lower rates of suicide & depression), Omega-3 fatty acids (the brain is 60% fat; don't eat any fat & you'll starve your brain), avocadoes, walnuts, blueberries, broccoli, green tea (lowers the risk for Alzheimer's), spinach, tuna, oatmeal, turkey, red bell peppers (have a whole lot more of the good stuff than green bell peppers). Exercise oxygenates the blood, making the brain work more efficiently & be less susceptible to depression. Learning new things keeps the brain young; if you're a gourmet cook, learning a new recipe won't do it, you need something *new*. Learn to speak Chinese or dance the Tango or built a ship in a bottle. He said that he'd no more diagnose depression than he'd diagnose chest pain; depression is a symptom, & the underlying cause has to be addressed. Several things that we can adjust very easily will help our brains. Gratitude: Every day, make a list of the top 5 things for which you are grateful. Gratitude gets the brain into positive habits. Challenge & correct negative thoughts; thoughts lie! When you catch a negative or obsessive thought, say to yourself, "oops, that's just my brain" & replace the thought with something else. Depression makes people feel more pain; Pain ages people & makes the brain function less well. Treating depression reduces pain. interesting stuff, sorry it's so disjointed. My plan is to type up my notes; I'll post when I've got them all together & email them to anyone who's interested. just writing out my daily gratitudes has helped me a lot.

Yep, I am, was diagnosed the same as your hubby 6 or 7 years ago and controlled it by diet but it progressed and I am now diabetic. The first thing I did was eliminate everything white from my diet except for cauliflower. Then I enrolled in a 3 week class offered by our local hospital, met with a nutrionist and learned how to manage the disease. If your husband is not seeing an endocronologist I encourage him to do so. Some physicians (not saying yours is one of them) just don't give this disease the respect it truly deserves. It is serious but is easily managed with knowledge. I slowly added various foods into my diet, things like spaghetti, breads, potatoes, even cakes and desserts. But I learned how to manage them, what to combine with them to keep my sugar levels where they need to be or what to do to counteract them (the answer is exercise). So that candy bar has a price....30 minutes on the treadmill! Citrus is one of the safest fruits for me. When I was trying to figure out what I could eat I ate it then checked my sugar levels in 90 minutes, again 30 minutes later. If it was too high then I had my answer, eat in moderation. Get him to a nutritionist, they are invaluable and if he goes to a diabetic class it is often free.

AltaVista, Google, and TopoZone have been very helpful for on-line searches. The basic TopoZone was free, but now is only available by subscription. That is unfortunate because TopoZone was very good for locating land holdings and obscure, abandonded cemeteries. Towns and villages that no longer exist can be found if those had a post office in the past, or were of note in their day. Where available, TopoZone can show section numbers. With this inforamtion and the legal description of land, one can locate exactly where the land holdings of your ancestors were. This can be very helpful and it adds to the knowledge of living conditions of your ancestors. As an added bonus, TopoZone can show the topology (elevation lines) of the land and this gives one the idea of terrain hilliness or flatness. Major peaks, hills, gullies, and streams are readily identifiable which is an additional aid to finding "the old home place". The GLO (goverment land office) has records of land patents. Some of these are duplicated in state, on-line achives. A land patent is the first official record of land ownership, many of which were purchased by homesteading. Military warrants was another instrument of purchase. However, beware that a military warrant (grant) could be sold to another party - some were sold at 10 cents to the dollar, thus a particular plot of land could be recorded in the name of the warrant but was held by different person. In the majority of cases, warrants were executed by the person who earned those.

We'll be traveling the end of this month. First going to our camper in the mountains and a few days later leaving there to go to my niece's wedding in Ft. Wayne, IN. After that back home so DH can have cataract surgery on his other eye. He's having his first eye done next Thursday.

Haven't been to our camper yet this summer and we miss it. Also, we want to sell it and can't as long as we're home. Won't get much with the way gas prices are, but we just don't need the hassle anymore. Guess it'll be August before we can spend much time up there.

DGD that just graduated from college would be on a plane 24/7, I think. She spent a semester in her junior year in Spain. From there she went to Morocco, Italy, and Ireland. This year she spent her Christmas break in Egypt, and went backpacking in Central America for the spring break. She has fun, though, and has no fear of strange places.

Your kiddo will pass my kiddo's floating the Guadalupe River in New Braunfel. Then they are going to the Texas Ski Ranch to wake board.

My grandkids travel back and forth from PCB, Fla. to KC, Mo. frequently, as well as me - I travel there a few times a year.

I have a great-niece flying out on the 25th of this month and she will be away for around 7 months. She will be 22 soon and has travelled so much in her lifetime. Last year she spent 6 months at university in Sweden, travelling to other countries while there, did a Contiki tour of Europe and spent time in England and the U.S. before flying home. This time around she will be going to Beijing, Spain, Italy, Poland and Denmark - spending time with friends she made while in Sweden, and then going to university in Switzerland. She has worked hard to pay for this, as well as getting fantastic grades at university here, so good on her. Lucky girl!!!

dd2 returned tonight from business conference in vegas, ds2 and dil are headed up to mackinaw city next weekend. they'll day trip the island and the fort. they're meeting friends...

then in july we're headed to fil's (all 17 of us...10 adults and 7 grands)

I wish I was travelling somewhere. When I used to work in the travel business I was never home if I had the chance to get away.

My sister flew to St. Louis on Tuesday and then my cousin's in St. Louis are going on a European cruise. My cousin Kurt and his wife travel the world far and wide just like his parents did. My sister travels to St. Louis to look after their dogs. LOL

DS, DDIL and two grandkids are leaving this morning to float the Buffalo River. A bunch of them float every year on Father's Day weekend. Last year there were 54 of them. Number's down this year - I think about 30.

Howdy, Vannie! My nephew is heading to Mexico on a church mission, my niece & her DD are on their way to Virginia to join her DH at an army base there and Sunday my family (10 of us) leave on a cruise. My street's almost empty cause everyone's gone hither and yon.

We just got back on Monday from TX. for our DD's college graduation. Her and SIL will be leaving tomorrow for a week long adventure in Utah. Then next weekend, we are leaving(again)for a long weekend at 'Back to the 50's' in the Twin Cities.

I agree with okwriter...once I get this long weekend over, I am staying PUT!!!

I just got back from Hawaii about an hour ago. Next month I am going to MN to see Hayjud and then in Oct. I am going to MA with my son.

Yep - I'm leaving for 10 days in Ireland on Thursday, then next month on a week's cruise to Alaska w/ week land tour of national parks, and to Austria in late August till early Oct. I think I'm lucky, too.

I just got back from a road trip, will go to Durango with my husband, daughter and son in law in early July, and to my next biking trip in late July through mid August.

Good grief I can hardly afford to travel and hour and a half to my mom's house.

How does everyone do it?

We make decent money, have very small credit card bills, have a small house, and only have one car less than five years old. Between food, gas and life, we never have anything left over. Everyone else I know is traveling this summer. My friends are taking their kids to Cabo next month. I'm starting to sound like I'm whining but we have literally never gone anywhere, not even a honeymoon. We've never been able to take our kids farther than Lake Tahoe. We only live a few hours from there. Wait, we did go to Disneyland once.

What is the secret? I need to know.

All the lucky people who are traveling.....wish I was with you! I love to travel, especially on the motorcycle, or plane. My sister from Orlando was here and flew back home yesterday. I visited her last March and hope to go again in a few months.

And those of you tubing in New Braunfels....it's one of my favorite towns in Texas and only 45 minutes away.

Hope you all have fun with your traveling this summer.
