I wonder if she had the fertility treatment outside of the U.S. I just got through reading about it and she has a set of twins prior to her fertility treatment. It indicated that the doctors who have been monitoring her were not the ones involved in the fertility treatment. Their last name is Suleman, could that be a name from India? Her father said they had a bigger home somewhere else and no one was going to learn where it is.

From what I can understand, I don't think they expected all 8 eggs to fertilize. Presumably she only wanted one child, however the mom refused to have the number of viable embryos reduced when they discovered she was carrying multiples.

The medical profession can't mandate she abort some.

pattico, we - the taxpayers - are going to end up paying for a very large part of the cost of their raising. On another forum I go to this was one of the discussions. The drs are saying it's not their decision re: family size. The dr(s) who did the fertizlation treatment need to help pay the expenses. They also need to say NO, I'll not help you gain more children. Surely not all of the first 6 were with fertilzation treaments? Going to get interesting.......

She already had 6 kids,Seems to me if she didn't have much of a fertility issue!AND yet she was able to convince a fertility specialist to implant 8 embryo's?! (BTW where did the money from that come from?)

While invitro had given so many infertile the child they wanted, implanting 8 IMHO is negligent.

Her Mom was interviewed, and said something along the lines about" was she supposed to murder some of her children?" when reduction was offered. Not going to get into the entire life thing, but I have issues with that. All of which go back to the implantation of 8 in the first place.

Nowhere in any of the articles did it say she had an in vitro procedure.

It is far more likely she took a drug like Clomid. This fertility drug causes many follicles to all mature at the same time, producing many eggs. It's also possible she never told the fertility specialist she already had 6 children.

She didn't show up at Kaiser until she was already 12 weeks pregnant, and she didn't get fertility treatments from Kaiser.

I'm with Kathy on this. She already had 6 with no problem. The Los Angeles Times reported on Thursday that Angela Suleman said her daughter had the embryos implanted last year, resulting in the eight births.

Oh well, until SHE speaks out and tells the media her story, everything we read is speculation. Right? From the sounds of it though, they live in a well-to-do part of the city, so I doubt she'll be on assistance. But I've been wrong once or twice before..... ;o)

It doesn't bother me. If she's happy and it is not a burden on the taxpayer why not? I'm sure she will gt a lot of offers from different companies. I don't think there is any history of child neglect with her.

The report DH heard tonight said that she's from Iraq, declared bankruptcy 2 years ago (isn't that timing interesting?), is living with her parents, and the father isn't her husband, but her boyfriend.

Who knows what's true and what isn't, but to answer the question above--absolutely YES. totally irresponsible of a dr. to give any kind of fertility treatment to a woman who has 6 kids that she apparently could afford to support as it was.

She obviously didn't need fertility treatments since she already had six kids. It's not the the doctors' right to tell a woman how many kids she should have. But to my mind a doctor shouldn't provide fertility treatments to a woman who has six kids, since she obviously doesn't have fertility problems. And implanting eight was irresponsible. I didn't think they usually implant that many.

They might not have expected 8 eggs to fertilize, but they don't implant unfertilized eggs. The practitioner who implanted them, knowingly implanted 8 fertilized eggs.

No, they don't usually implant that many. Fertility specialsts here in the USA have stated that this is totally against the USA guidelines. More are implanted in a 35-year-old woman than in a 22-year-old woman, but never would they implant eight. That's why the USA specialists are speculating that she had the procedure done in Mexico or some country other than the US.

What I understood is that the babies' GRANDMOTHER declared bankruptcy, but didn't appear in court for the hearing and didn't submit some necessary paperwork so the case was dismissed. She had listed over $900,000 in debts.

I worked with a girl yrs. ago that went through fertility issues and treatment for a few yrs. She took Clomid and then Pergonal injections which produce the multiple eggs to be ready to be fertilized. She had 11 fertilized eggs implanted and 3 took. They absolutely do implant more than 8 eggs! When we found out that they implanted 11 eggs, we were blown away. I guess they were counting on only a few making it... but what if all 11 had been viable? Selective termination was not an option for this couple as they were afraid of terminating some and then losing the others.

Ok, I have heard a new story today that she is NOT married. Had treatments for her earlier pregnancies and that these will probably be her last b/c they put the last of her frozen eggs in her for these children. The story also had quotes from her Mother who is not supporting what she did. It stated that her first 4 children had the same name for a father listed. I'm sure more will be reported as the days go.

Yes, she obviously knows how to work the system. I imagine that even if she gets these media deals that she'll spend most of the money on herself. She is obviously very self-centered. Anyone who had that many kids as a single mom obviously has a problem & isn't interested in the best interest of the children. And one of them is autistic, so obviously he requires extra attention. Then to have eight embryos implanted. She is very fortunate that the children were born without any apparent problems. She wasn't even able to raise the ones she had before without help from her mother. I feel so sorry for those children.

She wasn't implaned with 8 eggs, as far as I've understood all along. They were expecting seven babies. The eighth one was a surprise. I read somewhere (oh brother, now I'm jumping on the 'conclusion' bandwagon here....) that one of the eggs, or perhaps more than one of the eggs, divided and some of the kids are actually twins. She does have one other set of twins. All of the children were conceived with the help of a fertility specialist (and I mean ALL of her children), so she has had problems concieving from day one.

And until we know 100% for sure what the doctors knew or didn't know, and how she was able to afford the treatments, it's all speculation. I love the internet because the biggest and the best rumours get started here. LOL

Nobody has interviewed the MOTHER yet, just the grandma. Let's wait to see what she says and just how much truth grandma has been talking. I think the real truth will lie somewhere in the middle.......

Kittiemom, I agree with you. Especially the 7 year old as being the most self-sufficient will probably take a back seat. I suppose community people will come forward to help, but it's going to be a 24/7 kind-of-a-thing for years. I read her mother said she would be "gone" when she gets home with the babes.

Everyone loves babies and kids, or at least most do. But an obsession is not good.
This was probably all planned out from the moment she found out she was pregnant.

She worked at a fertility clinic, and the embryos were "left over" from a previous IVF session. While I can understand not wanting to abort, I'm not sure that implanting all 8 was such a bright idea. I wonder if this was sort of a DIY or off the books project.
