Where would you move my microwave to?

I am throwing around so many ideas, you guys must think I am nuts. You guys have so much expertise though! Your advice is wonderful!

I saw a pic of Teppy's cabinets and they inspired me to abandon ideas for floor and countertop and spend almost all of my budget on new cabinets and then go cheap for the counters and floors, which can always be replaced later.

I have appts to get 3 bids this week from cabinet builders.

So again, here is the pic of my kitchen so you can see the layout, which I find to work very well. I am open to mixing anything up, but the main goal is to get rid of the microwave from over the range. But where? I am replacing both microwave and range, and will split out into cooktop and wall oven if that's the better choice.

I am also bumping out the island so it's more like 4' wide, but plan on putting garbage cabinets with pedal on both sides with the extra room.

I am thinking the desk area will become a built in floor to ceiling hutch type thing.

So where would you move my microwave to or what would you rearrange to make it happen?

BTW, there is 23" from fridge to wall on both sides.

I'm up thinking about the same thing....I was going to have it in the upper of my hutch near the fridge (creating a snack center for 2 young kids). Now I've decided the upper is too high. So I thought, maybe the counter of the hutch???? but I'd like to conceal it if I can.

So since I'm doing custom cabinets, I'm thinking in the lower hutch (it's 18' deep and I may be able to hide it behind a 'pocket' door...I'm pretty sure I've seen someone do that on GW.

How do you use your MW? If you cook with it, I would consider and want it near the range, I would look into the Sharp model that is 'over the counter. I believe it needs to hang from a standard 24' upper. I've included a link for you.

At any rate, I'd put it near the fridge or between the range and the fridge.

How about putting it under one of the ends of the island? I love the look of bookshelves at the end of islands...maybe you could combine cookbook shelves and a shelf for the microwave? It looks to me like there is room to make the island larger with plenty of room left for walkways.

annkh- thanks! The color is a glidden color called warm caramel. I do not care for their paint so I had it color matched at BM. As far as the microwave placement, I was considering re-organizing the cabinet so I could leave them as open shelves. Its a possibility, but I would prefer doors. As I was recently looking on Houzz I saw this photo which is exactly what I would want (if I can convince my dh to do some cabinet modifications!!) Am I missing something? Trentsteff- the island is already a done deal. I have the cabinets in my garage and unfortunately even the cheaper end drawer microwave is out of my budget! Our floors were finished today- YAY!! And we'll soon be finishing out the island and island lighting and then I can get to painting when the rest of our projects settle down! (we just had a new in-ground pool installed and concrete pool deck was done today too!!) It's nice to be heading somewhat into the home stretch! Thanks for the responses.

@practigal I would defintely not proceed without knowing that answer. Thanks! @desertsteph - I think with all those appliances in that space, the extra distance will be nice. If I open the ovens or refrigerator now, there is not room to get by with a person standing there. @dan1888 thanks! I cant widen it, but I really think the wider space will be nice. Anyway, the good news is that its good as is if the wall is load bearing. I'll just wait to see what the contractor says. Thanks!

How long will the RE boom last in California? Isn't it down a bit already? My advice: Take the money and run. Invest it. Rent in Omaha until you're sure about the work and the location. One thing at a time. This is actually three things: New location. New job for DH. New job for you. Put parenting on hold for a year. If you won't/can't bear children, you can ignore the ticking clock for a while. I'm laughing my head off about 'bugs' in the Midwest. What? I'll show you bugs! Go to Hawaii. Go anywhere there's no hard freeze. (Not that climate isn't changing everywhere. Chicago had a single snowfall Jan. - Mar. Miami is flooding while the rest of Florida burns; ETC!) Rent first is good advice for anyone who can afford it when relocating. Senior friends moved to Arizona, where they liked the weather, but not the 'black helicopter' vibe. Years ago one of DH's friends moved to Atlanta, where they discovered they were unacceptable Damn Yankees. We visited friends from suburban Chicago at their gorgeous home in Atherton, California; they moved 'home' after two years, not wanting that atmosphere for their young boys. My uncle and his bride lived Kauai as newlyweds; moved to the mainland to expose their boys to life beyond 'Surf's Up'. Right now there seems more polarization than ever, with Red State/Blue State. (We need a return visit from Dr. Seuss!)

I agree with @User. The white with black rendition of the house is AWFUL. Bright white does not belong on MCM. Someone did that in my neighborhood: they probably dropped the value of their house $20k; it was a beautiful, newly painted MCM when they bought it. Your wonderful house doesn't scream "I need a new paint job." Only the garage door is kind of a sore thumb, but that's an easy fix. I would paint the front door, but just for fun. Focus on the interior. Make a plan for adding solar, so you can reduce your utility bills. Drape the front with bougainvillea.

Definitely near the R/F. This could be in the R/F wall or in the end of the island. For kid use, you want it either undercounter or countertop high.

I have a micro drawer next to the cooktop on the end closest to the table. Something like that or in the island looks like it would work in your kitchen. They do cost more, but I couldn't put one anywhere in an upper without messing up everything. It was well wort it as a solution and I've been very happy with the way it was worked out -- use and location.

I think your kitchen will work best with a range unless you plan to move the fridge or rework the table area. You can't put wall ovens behind the table where the desk is and you need the work space on either side of the range/cooktop. If you did tall storage where the desk is and that replaced the pantries on either side of the fridge, you might put and oven and micro next to the fridge -- but is that a good location for the way you will use them and the traffic through your room?
