Why is it that some of us are plagued by ads and others are not? This site operates smooth as silk for me (knock wood!). Messages open instantly.

I have 3MB DSL. It's fast, but not the fastest out there. My DS has 5MB.

Are you sure it isn't your computer? I'm not having any trouble at all getting pages to open.

I was having issues to with slowness too .. and then I went and cleaned up my computer and did a defrag, ran scans, etc.. and now it's running a lot faster ....

Are you using Internet Explorer? I was and for a while GW's been slower than death, so I looked at it less. Then I saw a comment on one of the forums that it works better with non-Microsoft browsers, so I switched to Mozilla Firefox and lo and behold, it's quick to load again.

McPeg, try using Chrome or FireFox, if you're using IE.
Hubby insists on using IE for everything he looks as, and even when I check my email on his IE, instead of opening my Chrome, it just sits there, waiting for it to log-in. Horribly slow.

So try another browser and see if it opens quicker for you.
I have DSL as well, but the lite version, and it's quick enough for what we use it for.

No trouble here - Chrome user.

I use Firefox. I've never had this problem until this fall. Could be the ads I've blocked, my computer. I remain disappointed though as I find other issues like reporting spam etc and asking it to be removed never happens. The posts remain. They used to get removed and the users blocked. I miss our old Spike. Often wonder where he is these days. LOL

I will follow up though on running a clean on my system (normally I'm pretty good about this overall).

Peggy, I use firefox, and don't have slow problems. However, the ads are annoying me more and more. I don't like change, and prolly won't go somewhere else, unless EVERYONE goes with me. :)

I would miss everyone.

Messages open instantly for me. I think it might be your internet connection that is slowing you down, rather than GW.

I'm using FF with no pop-up ads.

FF with adblock plus, easy list and privacy list. If an ad pops up, all I do is right click on it, then on add filter. the photos at the top are even blocked and loads very fast.

Where did you all get the ad block?

What frustrates me to no end now is the fact it's taking FOREVER for posts to open up.
Mcpeg, I have had 'issues' with FF and slow loading pages, and freezing, etc. After I downloaded and installed Opera, I discovered the problem was with FF.

This AM Firefox just shut (closed) down on me 3 or more times for no reason. I just deleted it off, and then downloaded it and installed it again. It seems fine so far. My Add-ons were still there once I installed FF again.

The problem might also be with your Internet Service Provider. You might try doing a speed test at the link below. For a long time I thought I was having problems with my ISP, but then found out that it was actually FF problem.

Oh...You might also try (if you haven't already) going to tools at the top of the page, and then choosing Clearing Recent History.

hmmm...I take that back. Firefox just crashed again. It looks like I'll switch to Opera for a while as I would rather undergo a root canal than have to use IE, which crawls for me.

Did you try clearing your history? Are the pages still slow to load?

I have I.E. 8.0....no problem here.....now or ever! Clean your cookies and your temp files....

No problems here either and I have IE. I agree, defragment and clean out your temporary files. Also update if you haven't lately.

I had no issues at all until I did an update and did my regular maintenance. When I logged back in all heck broke loose! Ads and pop-ups! I cannot run firefox from our office network but added it to my laptop, it works great. But it means that I can't visit during the day.

I really do think that iVillage is trying to destroy this site.

I don't believe your issue is with GW or iVillage. I don't have much to go on, but there's classic symptoms here.

You're apparently using IE. Problem one. It's the slowest browser out there and swiss cheese for security. I'll venture a guess it's been a long time since you've done maintenance? Malware scan? Windows Updates? Do you have a firewall? Spywareblaster? Current definitions on everything?

iVillage has a lot of trouble with corrupting cookies too so occasionally a corrupt cookie will cause a lot of troubles, and it's predominantly in the Internet Elephant. (I have no respect for that browser as you can tell, and for well-documented reasons.) Also have you tweaked any settings in there, assuming you use IE? A couple that help for several issues are to go into Internet Options/Advanced, scroll down almost all the way to the bottom and place a check in "Do not save encrypted pages to disk" and "Empty temporary internet files when browser is closed" (or wording to that effect).

How much free space is on your drive? Have you done a disk check and defrag lately?

I'm a solid fan of Opera with the content blocking. Chrome is my 2nd choice, K-meleon next and Firefox afterward. I use different browsers for different things but still Opera is 80% of my browsing, well more than that all together but I keep other browsers open for different things too and occasionally need a different browser for a different page.

I have 1.5m DSL and often use dialup and opening pages that aren't filled with pictures is never a problem, but again, a faster browser makes a big difference, especially on dialup.

Try some of these things. I'll bet your frustrations will drop dramatically.

Hi Cynic, I am not "apparently using IE". It's firefox as stated previously. I have Adblock Plus among other filters. My husband is a computer professional of 25+ years. He has checked over my laptop as well. My laptop is whistle clean and I NEVER use IE, just Firefox. And when I close my browser all history is cleared. When things get slow I clear the cache and history. Failing that I shutdown my browser to clear everything and still the same results. I even ask DH to reconnect our server to the ISP provider to see if using a different server connection will improve things. Still the same. And we are getting excellent DSL service. That was a 'need' living where we are now because my DH is now a consultant and manages many servers from line, does his technical training continuously - he KNOWS this stuff in his sleep.

I do appreciate everyone comments - I'm surprised this thread is still going. I just have to accept that some things are the way they are.
