I asked the sales man to send me the AHRI so I can be sure things match up for the tax credit. If he doesn't catch his mistake I'll tell him to change the AH.

Is that normal for an experienced company to have people making mistakes?

I've seen it happen before, even from companies that appear to be top-rated and recommended. Mistakes happen. I'm guessing the majority of them would (hopefully) be catched when the equipment is ordered. But your guess is as good as mine. I think the AHRI certificate request will make him realize his mistake. Everything else you've described about the Trane dealer sounds fine. I don't like the idea of 19 kW heat strips or the idea of using the 04 air handler when it's not supported by Trane/AHRI (no warranty).

Classicdave is a professional, and I am not, so I count his advice as worth more than mine. I'm just an interested consumer who knows enough to be of some use to others. And I do hope I've been able to guide you through this in some way.

I took a glance at Trane's product data for the 4TEE3C01 air handler, which is info Trane publishes on the commercial section of their website, and it doesn't seem like it would be adequate to move the right airflow for 19 kW, or if it is, it is marginal. So first thing is to make sure it CAN. Also, the 4TEE3C series air handler may not be necessary, as it was built for the communicating outdoor models. The 4TEE3F series is the standard variable speed model and is more than fine for your system. For the labor warranty, you'd simply need to mention to the dealer that you want to purchase the extended labor warranty, which brings it to 10 years. Trane is good equipment but labor costs are not cheap and never have been, done right. This is a cost you'll have to evaluate for yourself and see if you can spring for it though. I think it's an additional $5-600 on Trane equipment but it varies by area/company/etc.

The sales rep should have the AHRI # for me today and I hope he catches himself on the AH. He has said that by having the 19KW if my main strips run out they can replace them with the other ones I'd already have?? He said my home will most likely Never need that much backup but it's better to put it in now as opposed to replacing them if they go bad.

Does this seem right? And yes Ryan your advice has been very valuable! You seem like you know more than some "professionals".

you are replacing a 2 1/2 ton system? you are strictly all electric?

how did old system perform both cooling and heating? any comfort issues?

here are the performance/eff numbers from the AHRI HP Directory.

according to the directory, the only matching system using the communicating air handler is the C01. and you should note the rather mediocre HSPF heating efficiency. The C04 air handler is not listed as a matching system.

Also with the communicating air handler, you would want the matching XL900 communicating thermostat.

I personally would forget the above configuration and go for the following.

your thermostat choices could be the 802,803, or HW VisionPro IAQ which is preferred.

as to the heat strip, what size do you currently have? Trane offers a 7/12 KW and 10/15 KW staged modules. The idea that you might requirew a 19 KW seems extreme and not necessary.

as far as price, nothing special here. I have seen three ton XL15i systems for about the same price.

My home is in Georgetown IN it's a 1900 sq ft tri level with a finished basment that's 700 sq ft (not a walkout).

My home is All electric and the current sytem is 2.5 ton. I believe my heat strips are 15kw at least that's what all the companies have told me.

The old system performed very well IMO. I've been here 5 years and never had any major problems besides the freon leaked. It's comfortable but with my home being a tri level the lower levels are always much cooler than upstairs just due to the principle of heat rising.
So what are your thoughts after that? Should I negotiate the price more? I am getting a media filter whole house humidifier and 2 years labor. Also financing for 36 months no interest.

here is a quick synopsis of your climate using Trane's customizer. This is only a snapshot that gives a picture of average temps.

Average high temperature: 89.4 Average low temperature: 31.1

if you even think or suspect you are borderline sized at 2 1/2 ton, I would ask dealer to perform a load calculation for both cooling and heating.

I would forget the communicating air handler configuration and go with standard VS air handler 39A1 to get the much better HSPF heating efficiency.

I would not have the 19KW heat strip. more is not better.
the 10/15 KW should be more than adequate.

15KW=51 KBTUs

The HW VP IAQ stat has "dehumidify on demand" feature and can also control the whole house humidifier.

running the VS blower continuously will help even out temps throughout your home as long as home including basement has good ductwork system both supplies and returns. of course, you are aware that trilevels and split levels are notorious for good heating and cooling. now is the time to address any ductwork issues and hot/cold spots in your home.

OP is getting a whole house humidifier.

will the 802 or 803 be able to control a humidifier like the HW VP IAQ? ask the dealer.

and if one believes the AHRI Directory is gospel, then the 39A1 air handler is a better choice than the 40B1. see below-and the heating BTUs at 17 degrees.
