Bassinette Question

My grandson and his wife are expecting a new baby next month and I want to knit a little blanket for the bassinette. Can anyone give me any idea what size it should be?

I've done one for a full size crib but want to do one for the bassinette.

All help will be greatly ppreciated.

Ivamae, the best I can find doing a search is that bassinet mattresses are 12" x 28". Hope this helps. And congratulations on becoming a Great Grandma!

I would think the size of a receiving blanket would be nice. They are 30" square. Yes.. congratulations on the new baby!

lol Rocky ya hit it right on the nail girlie girl. Of course its always going to be hot and humid and rainy and cold (much like houston weather), I do love new orleans but not downtown, I love the outskirts and on the other side of the Ponchatrain (sp) and ya have to understand I am the person that says God should just drop LA in the ocean cause of I-10, nothing pretty on that road at all!!! (ok, just cause my name is Katrina it doesn't mean that I wished that storm on New Orleans). But there are some very beautiful parks, houses, plantations, bed and breakfasts, etc there. I was there for a week in June and plan to go back. I stayed in Albita Springs, about maybe 30 mins from New Orleans, just across the causeway. Other than that I think New Orleans well its nasty! There is alot of work there for architects though, they still have alot of the storm damage and they do have some very beautiful buildings downtown. As far as the fried southern food hmmm ya better get used to spicy cajun food lol. Rox ya didn't mention the swamps lol, that is one place I'd hate to make enemies in thats forsure, they'd never find ya if ya went missing! Christmas is a neat time to go and look although like Rox says, its cold and rainy in the winter and very steamy in the summer. trilobite I have this mantra when I still get really stuck on tossing something I know I should, I tell myself "it's just stuff" and that helps me see it differently without all the guilt and emotional attachments (and it was hard work getting to this point and it sounds like you've been on your own journey). But the way I try to look at things now is it is all just stuff, some of it is useful, some of it is not, some is just passed its use-by date (that's the category I'd put these toys in) but it doesn't define who we are or our past or our relationships. honestly, whenever I give something away I let it go, if the person uses it, sells it, gets rid of it i dont care because by giving it away I dont control it anymore, so just like your mother giving these things to you, does not mean you have to keep them for her sake if they arent useful to you, that's not fair on you and your house is not a dumping ground for old hoarded items. If you mother asks "where are those toys I gave you for the baby?" just tell her you put them through the wash and they fell apart or something like that, no ones feelings get hurt and it's done but sometimes that's the only way to deal with guilt trips.

Rule number one is my friends house when my Bull Matiff mix is in the house. When the cat shows up, there will be a show. My dog loves to sniff on the cat, but he is deathly afraid of him, so after a good sniff, he will back up, start throwing his head around, dance a bit and bark at the cat. The cat (usually playing with one of the Chihuahuas) often just gets up and leaves - he does not like the loud barking. This is when things get good, The dog becomes torn, "Do I go after the kitty" "Do I stay here and bark my frustrations out at being afraid but wanting to go up and play like the Chi's do" Often when he gets the gumption up he will follow a couple of steps, this is when the cat, Bear will turn around and face the Bull Mastiff - who retreats to a safe distance at an incredible speed - Most entertaining to watch when it happens. Usually the dog wont get up enough umph to follow the cat....super chicken in a dog suit.

Just referring back to an earlier comment....Beverly (or -ley) might have been a man's name once upon a time in the UK, but you may be assured that it's normally a woman's name these days. I don't think I've ever come across the name for a man. I think it's a bit like Hilary - posh men sometimes get called it, but it's normally a woman's name. (Beverley is also a very nice town in Yorkshire, not far from Hull, but that's another story.) Writers who got stale? How about the Ben Aaranovich "Rivers of London" series, which started so well and rapidly became very silly.

Thanks to both of you. I had searched as well for the size and found it hard to believe that they are just 12 inches wide. If that is the case, then maybe 30 inches is a bit much. I'm beginning to think maybe about 25 or 26 inches wide. Perhaps then it would also fit in a buggy. What do you think?

Regrettably, most new moms today only use a blanket OUTSIDE the sleeping time - to swaddle and snuggle. Moms are taught to NOT use a blanket while babies are sleeping (on their backs) but rather are using a sleeper-vest for warmth. Also, do they already have a buggy? Keep in mind that all babies are now 'strapped in' therefore their legs need to be 'free' - such as in car seats, strollers, etc. Yes, a blanket could be used OVER them once they are strapped in. Seems a receiving blanket size would be of the most use. Congrats on the pending arrival!

I have a new grandson--3 months old now.

We did not use blankets at all and still don't . Daughter likes these pre-made, all in one swaddlers. I swaddled my babies but just used blankets. Amazed at the cool stuff that's out there.

Even in the car seat and stroller the don't use blankets, they have this sleeping bag type thing that zips around.

How about if you knitted a blanket to use on the floor for "tummy time". With baby's sleeping on their backs all the time they have to do tummy time with mom and dad so they don't get flat heads and strengthen their necks (according to dd).

At my house we are always looking for a soft blanket for that activity. I guarantee you that blanket would see a lot of photo ops :-)

Depends too on size of bassinette they have and are going to use, some are tiny and others huge ones that are wooden and swing back and forth. I belive you want something to tuck completely around the tiny baby.
