how much space between cabinets and island?
Comments (9)Majorly disappointed! harumph.... Green designs - so what you are suggesting then it an L shape with an island? I'll have to cogitate on that.... I suppose the other ideas would to be to flip the U into the direction I have more room to work with. Just got up to measure everything - I did before, but obviously - not too good. The space is 16' long - for 8 feet of this it is 10'wide, and for the other 8' it is 11.5' wide (at this end there are 3 doors, and a window, and the kitchen is at the other end - the 10' wide) I want to open up the narrow part (that has the kitchen now) with removing a wall to make it 13' wide....and I should have mentioned that the cabinets will all be replaced. Looking at ikea, most cabinet bases are 24" - is that the standard? so - 13', 2 cabs each side - 9' between cabs- still not working.......See MoreGood distance between island with stools and pantry
Comments (3)I have 15" overhang, 41" aisle and a 16" deep pantry. The island only extends about 15" past the pantry, so the island overlaps the entire pantry. Like Kiffgirl, our stools tuck under the overhang. I have not found it to be an issue, but it unless your stools are REALLY narrow, they will likely stick out with an 11" overhang. Our aisle between pantry and island is a higher traffic area as it leads to fridge, laundry and garage. We still don't have difficultie with someone sitting at the stool and someone else passing through,or accessing the pantry and I have two big sons, plus my husband and I....See MoreIs 5 feet to wide for an island?
Comments (28)My island is 5'6" wide, a little more than 8 feet long. I love the width, as I had plenty of room for a bank of drawers on one end, and plenty of room behind the prep sink. If you're going to have a sink in the island and seating across from it, then you really do need to make sure you have enough room for someone to sit there without getting splashed. I also second the idea of seating people on two edges rather than in a straight line. I did this and we often find ourselves at the island for meals. It really makes conversation easy and comfortable. I also like that there is a spot near my prep area for someone to sit and talk to me. I am going to be the dissenting voice in aisle space. I have 42 inches between the cooktop/fridge/oven wall and the island, and I like that the island is just a pivot and one step away when taking things out of the fridge or oven and putting them on the island, or taking things from the prep area to the cooktop. Another thing that worked well for me was to put two trash pullouts in, one by the prep area and the other, larger one by the cleanup area for general trash and scraping plates. Comments (29)Thank you everyone for the feedback and images! This truly helps visualize the colors in the space. (And I agree, the mobile version of Houzz could use some upgrades in the viewing/posting space :)). I will keep ya'll updated on what we go with, it may come down to a battle of rock, paper, scissors to make the call, lol. They Peacock Blue and Roycroft Bottle Green have both their unique charms that is making this a difficult decision. Once I get larger samples of the colors, I will post a follow-up as well. You all are amazing!!...See Moresushipup1
