We employed Humming Bird Woodworks to design, build and install our cabinets and countertops. We went with all drawers except for under the kitchen sink. The corners are dead as we opted for drawers instead. This is the only recent work in the kitchen. The tile backsplash and cork floor by Duro Design were done a number of years ago. We retained the upper cabinets which are original to the house which was built in 1991. We may or may not replace them sometime in the future. For now, we're quite pleased with the final result. Please excuse the quality of the photographs which were taken with an iPhone for convenience, the colors look better in real life.

Thanks for sharing your work. What was it about the lower cabinets that you wanted to change? Any "before" pictures available? Love the soapstone runnels.

First of all, we fell in love with the quality and look of the cabinets the first time we saw them. The fabricator of the soapstone also builds the cabinets which we saw when we visited their shop to checkout the soapstone. We originally were only looking to do the countertops as our cabinets were 22 years old and still in decent shape. After seeing their cabinets and soapstone sink we thought about having them modify our sink cabinet and building a new island. We went in that direction for awhile and then decided to just replace all the lower cabinets figuring we would be in the house another twenty plus years so why not get something we really would like.

We decided to go with all drawers on the lower cabinets and island as we thought it would be easier to get at things. We also deadened out the corners to accommodate more drawers which we felt was more efficient use of space. We were able to design the drawer depth to accommodate what we wanted to store in them and everything we use now has a place in a drawer.

One thing we did with our island was to make the base cabinet 27 inches deep rather than the 24 inch depth of our old island. This allowed us to go with a deeper 23 inch drawer. We keep all our pots and frying pans in the island so needed the extra depth. We also reduced the size of the island top from 37 to 33 inches to give us more room around the island. We now have 36 inches between the island and sink and more room on the other side between the island and kitchen table. We never used the 10 inch overhang on the old island for stools which I suppose is what the overhang was designed for, we went with a 5 inch overhang which seems right rather than a one inch all around.

Got a better camera, a bit dark, but you get the idea. Taken after a good oiling when the kitchen is its most tidiest. :-)
