Carier Heat pump/air handler

Hi,

I got a quote from a contractor in Northern Virginia, for a carrier all electric system

Inside unit - FVBNF003

Outside - 25HCC636 or 536

The contractor quoted me $4500 for the system including installation

The contractor does not have any complaints on BBB. Another contractor had quoted me $6200 for a 13 SEER Lennox system.

I was under the impression that carrier systems were really expensive

Is this quote too good to be true?

I would not have the Lennox.

Both the Carriers are nice systems and the price seems too good to be true for a three ton. However at the very least you want the 005 VS air handler to improve your eff numbers.

add a staged heat strip and an Edge thermidistat and you would be set.

I don't think its too good to be true. You found a contractor who likes to work. He's making money still. He's just not making thousands on one job.
Alot of the contractors giving high estimates in the 8 thousand range aren't getting jobs nearly as often as the contractors that give low estimates.

The crankcase heater seems to be standard on this heat pump (see page 2). http://blue-phx.com/pdf/Trane%20XR14%20Performance.pdf I would guess the other option he wants you to buy is a hard start kit, which is a capacitor (see page 5 of the link above). That is only needed when the supplied line voltage is marginal from the power company, or sometimes when there is a lot of refrigerant to get moving at startup when you have a long lineset going to the second floor. Occasionally, you can extend the life of a very old compressor with the kit. In other words, the capacitor is used when the system does not work without it. It is not a preventive maintenance item that would make your system last longer.

@dovetonsils Thanks for response. Still in design phase, but at this point there is crawl space under entire main floor however the most eastern part is probably only 2' off of ground and increases heading to west in direction of green arrow. Flat roof throughout both lower and upper levels. So for the time being, I hear at least a partial "vote" for location B.

You should easily be able to find a 2.5 ton heat pump air handler that will fit in your closet. a 17 1/2" wide air handler should be available in Goodman, Amana, and Carrier. You will need to make sure your home is adequately wired to accept at least 10KW electric heat for backup and emergency heat. Easy, Easy! Thanks tigerdunes, The house is a split level built in the 70s with about 2000 sq ft. The current furnace is the original and has 4 x 5 KW heat strips. It struggled to keep the house warm but I think that is more from it's age and upkeep than anything else. It's an old Westinghouse, I think it says the model number is ele068bh. Nov avg low 40 high 53, Dec avg low 36 avg high 47, Jan avg low 37 avg high 48. Last year we had 22 days during the summer with the temp over 80. Summer months avg in the high 70s

Thanks for the response. i will be meeting the contractor in a few days. Are there any specific pitfalls/clarifications i should address before i sign the paper work

yes there are.

1.the larger 005 var speed air handler to improve the system's eff numbers.

2.new and correctly sized refrigerant lineset.

3.Edge Carrier thermidistat

4.staged heat strip.

either outside condenser would be fine. the two stg Comfort 16 series would be preferred over the sgl stg 15 model.

get the final mdl numbers both outside and inside units and post before signing any paperwork.

Outdoor - Bryant 286BNA036 (2 stage)
Indoor - FEANF003 or 005
Evolution/Infinity Control
15KW heat strip
Total price 4550 (including haul away)
2 yr labor/10yr parts warranty

I live in your area and would like the name of that HP contractor you found. I have a quote here for virtually the same system for $10,800. Only difference seems to be Bryant name on the HP.

We got a quote here in Va beach for a 3 ton Carrier Performance Series inside and out, 15 SEER, 9 HSPF,, variable speed airhandler and 2 stage outside unit for $6800.00. hope this helps you
