I love flannel sheets but hate the pilling. This year I bought some from the company store that are called Velvet Flannel. They are really as soft as velvet and NO pilling. They are 100% cotton and so do not make you feel hot, just cozy. They are pricey, but completely worth it. We are having a cool summer so I am still sleeping in them! Here is a link; it looks like they don't have any new ones for fall and the rest are limited and on sale.. I hope they aren't discontinuing them... I'll never be able to go back!

I can't decide about jersey. I have a set for my guest room and have slept in them, but some nightgowns stick to them and it always feels like I am tangled up in them because they stretch. But they are soft and light and I like that.

Definitely don't like the jersey sheets. Tried them when they came out and have to agree with olychick, it feels like any clothing you have on when you get into bed sticks to the sheets. So if you sleep in your natural state, it may be totally fine.

Can't do flannel either as I need the bed to be cool for a good night's sleep. Maybe in a few years...

i turn our thermastat down way low in the winter because i love sleeping in a chilly room and snuggling under the covers... have always had flannel sheets, but last year bought a very high quality flannel(don't know brand-they were in macy's but significantly more expensive than the regular flannels) and they were the absolute softest, coziest sheets i've ever slept in...maybe they're similar to the velvet flannels that olychick references above.
i don't use them in the summer because i am warm at night too---plus, it gives me something to look forward to with the cold weather!

I just can't get used to flannel or jersey knit. I like crisp sheets - like my old Wamsutta Supercale 50/50 blend sheets that wear forever. Unfortunately they don't make them any longer.

As for turning down the temperature at night - we do that too and open a window as soon as we no longer need the AC. The room can get pretty chilly but that's when I pull out my Company Store Alternative Down comforter and sleep cozy warm all night.

I was wondering why there are more patterned sheets in flannel than in cotton? I bought my son and his wife a set of flannel sheets for Christmas which had a light blue background with large white snowflakes on them.

That's unheard of for cotton sheets. I guess putting a print on flannel is easier than cotton?

I love love love my cozy flannel sheets. I keep them on the bed all year long. You may not like them in the summer, but they're perfect the rest of the year.

Ugh, I HATE those jersey sheets -the bed never feels clean to me. I've been to visit with family and that's all they've had, so of course I graciously slept on them, but crawling into bed never felt good to me.

Even as warm natured as I am, I like my flannel sheets - in our coldest temps. However, when I use those, I just use a light blanket or quilt. Love the feel of the flannel. I don't really dislike the knit sheets but we don't use them. When my grandmother was still at home and we were taking care of my mom - they both loved them - they felt soft and comfy to them.

I love pretty sheets. I coordinate them with our bedding. Depending on what sheets I am using, I will "dress the bed" with the sheet and top cover folded down (sheet showing).

I'm fanatic about keeping the sheets changed. Clean sheets feel so good!

Linen Sheets!

For years I've had two sets of high count cotton sheets, which we loved.

It was time to replace a set and I had heard good things about linen sheets, particularly people like me that are hot natured at night.

I researched for a few days and decided on the Restoration Hardware Linen Sheets.

Oh, I can't recommend them enough.

They are so soft, I keep moving my legs and feet against the sheets, and I don't perspire at night like I used to--I sleep better.

I wash them in cold water on delicate cycle, connected bungee cords between trees and let them dry outside, then throw them in the dryer for a few minutes to remove dust and such, and put them on the bed.

They'd look a lot better ironed but I haven't ironed them yet. The wrinkles aren't too bad.

Absolutely they were worth they money and I got them on sale.

My second choice was the Eileen Fisher Collection at Garnet Hill. They also got good reviews.

I've never tried knit sheets, but I tried flannel and fleece sheets last year after hearing rave reviews for them. The flannel sheets are cozy and great for the coldest nights. I don't use heat and love when the house get down to 50 degrees F. The fleece sheets were too warm for me no matter how cold it was, plus they shed like a dog blowing coat. Yuck! Those went directly into the donation box. When using fleece sheets, I still use regulart cotton pillow cases. I need that crisp, cool fabric against my face.

I have way too much bedding. Like Tinam61, I love coordinating the sheets with the other bedding and making the bed with all of the layers showing. It's such a fun change for me after years of owning only white sheets and towels.

We use LL Bean's flannel all winter. They do pill, but not to the point of being uncomfortable. I'm curious about Olychick's review of the ones from the Company Store. May have to try a set.

Typically use solid color sateen sheets spring through fall. Wanted to try something new, so I bought a set of print percale from LL Bean after reading lots of good reviews. At first touch the sheets felt soft enough. I washed them yesterday and put 'em on for the first time. After crawling in bed I could immediately feel the difference. Wasn't what I was hoping for. It wasn't overly scratchy, but the softness that sateen offers was definitely missing. Hoping additional washings (and a little softener) changes that. Also missed the coolness that sateen gives to bare legs and feet.

One warning about flannel sheets...if you sleep wearing flannel in the winter AND you are on flannel sheets....you will turn into a piece of human velcro! I wear flannel nightgowns in winter and have only tried flannel sheets once - never again.

It's near impossible to turn over without your night clothes ending up knotted around you.

Jmc, I've never had that problem and I move around a lot.

Since I keep a sheet on the sofa all the time (except when company comes over) I used the top sheet from this set and it's a perfect match!

I'm with jmc on the sticking flannel. I use flannel in the winter and only wear silky nightwear.

So many hot natured people here! I sleep on flannel sheets, under two blankets, a heavy faux fur throw and have a heated mattress pad. I still get a little chilly. But I don't wear much at all in the way of night clothes.

In the summer, now, I sleep on crisp cotton sheets (RL is my fav), and use a fleece blanket.

The ceiling fan runs every night of the year- as much white noise as it is cooling in summer.

Bumble, what is "RL?" Do you mean Restoration Hardware?

If I slept under your covering I'd be sweating bullets! lol. I think it's probably my "non-hormones" because I haven't taken anything since my hysterectomy years ago.

But when it stays below freezing with a strong north wind, I do lay on the sofa under a big blanket with a fire going. Those are the times I'm cold to the bone. And it feels so good!

LOL Bumble. You ARE cold natured! I've always leaned toward warm.

I don't sleep in much either - cold not bear a flannel gown! The best feeling under a flannel sheet is wearing nothing at all.

OHMIGOSH - you sleep under a FLEECE blanket in the summer?! I do like a cold bedroom. We are the same way with the ceiling fan. No noise, but I love feeling the "breeze". Year round. I miss it when we travel LOL.

Sometimes I turn my my mattress pad on low too, Tina! In the summer...

We keep the AC set at 78 at night in the summer.
In the winter, the heat is set at 64.

Thanks, Terriks. I had a RL sheet set and I really liked it. But it wore down after a couple of years and started to rip in the middle. At least they were on sale! This was the set that had pink flamikngos on them.

Bumble, we put our a/c on 72 at night. That way I can cuddle under the covers or else I'd burn up. We also keep a fan going at night.

In the winter we put the thermostat around 65 at night.

This is funny. In our office we each have our own computers. DH's is under the ceiling vent. One winter I was cleaning house and got real hot so I lowered the thermostat. When I came back here my dh was wearing a stocking hat and his heavy robe! lol. He knows I get hot so he was being thoughtful. :)

My sister was like you when we were growing up. We always wanted to share a room instead of separate rooms. Funny because we are totally different temperature wise. Good thing my dad is warm natured like me. ;-)

I don't think anyone has yet mentioned my winter combo: I find flannel flat AND fitted sheet to be too much (sort of like the flannel pj's and sheet combo someone else mentioned) so I use a regular cotton fitted sheet with a flannel top sheet. I have flannel sheets from Lands End that have lasted forever without pilling. My fitted sheet is also from LE, I think, or Company Store. I have a hard time finding fitted sheets to fit our extra-deep mattress, but have had good luck with both LE and CS.

I like flannel pillowcases in winter, too.

I stick to off-white sheets for the most part. Easy to mix/match, sometimes with a more decorative/printed pillowcase.

Olychick, thanks for the heads up on the Velvet Flannel! I ordered a set today and even got free shipping. Looking forward to temps cool enough to actually use them. ;)

Natal, I hope you love them, too. I can hardly wait to go to bed at night when I have them on the bed. I got a few of the duvet covers and in the winter I use them with just the bottom sheet (no top) with a down comforter inside. Heaven.
