split system re-fit to existing gas furnace

BACKGROUND: We have a four-zone house (about 4500) sq ft that we recently purchased. Built in 1958. All zones are gas furnaces with AC compressors outside (R22). Three systems are four years old -- the fourth is 15 years old. The four AC compressors MUST (not an option, in other words) be moved for a two-story, 15x20 basement/kitchen addition (for a family member), and because they are located under a deck -- poor ventilation and circulation where they are. We are located in northern Virginia (Fredericksburg).

ISSUE: Instead of replacing the AC units with new 410 units, we are considering split heat pump-gas furnace for the three newer systems and a complete replacement heat pump (with strip heaters) for the older system.

QUESTIONS: 1. Is our approach sound? That is, should we make the move to heat pumps? 2. We've been quoted $30,000 for new R-410 Goodman Ac units and line sets. Fair price? 3. A different company quoted $28,750 to completely replace the old system, and install three 14 SEER Rheem units -- all line sets AND new ductwork for the addition included (and all R-410). They are a highly reliable company, but it seems high -- equipment costs retail for what we're getting are around $10-12k, which would make the labor around $16k.

Thanks for the help -- we do not mind paying the piper; just want to be sure his tune is not more seductive than it needs to be.
