Finished kitchen (thanksgiving week DIY remodel)

A year and a half ago, we DIY remodeled our kitchen in a week, and we're finally done. :-) Since we enlarged the kitchen into the breakfast nook area, we planned to bump out a wall to add on a new nook area. There were some delays in that process, which didn't start until last July, but we just got final inspection approval last week, so I'm finally ready to post finished kitchen photos. In the meantime, we also dressed up the dining room with wainscoting and walnut floors, added a bath and laundry room upstairs, and built a sunroom (connected to the breakfast nook). Oh and re-did the mudroom, powder room, and pantry.

So here we go:

Before was builder-grade oak cabinets that I sold to a coworker for $1000 after putting a few in the garage; black-and-white speckled laminate countertops (couldn't even give that away on freecycle), gray berber carpet (yikes!) and not nearly as many cabinets as could have fit there.

OK, and here are some details. Total cost was about $34,000.

Cabinets: Kraftmaid Parkdale door, vanilla bean glaze, purchased from HD (found a great KD there).

Paint: Sherwin Williams "Nomadic Desert"

Floor: Rialto Beige porcelain from Lowe's, Spectralock Mushroom grout

Heated floors: Warming Systems

Backsplash: Matte biscuit ceramic subways and 6x6s by American Olean from a local tile store, with bronze liners from Home Depot. Spectralock Almond grout.

Granite: Terra Brazilas

Range: GE Profile double oven (love it), bought from HD

Wall Oven: Fridgidaire convection, bought on ebay

Fridge: Whirlpool, bought from Lowe's

Dishwasher: Maytag, bought from HD

Microwave: GE, bought from Lowe's

(None of the appliances are high end, so I haven't included model numbers or anything).

Hardware: Birdcage knobs came free with the cabinets, we spraypainted them bronze. Birdcage pulls are "twisted wire D pull" from hardwareaccents.com. Bar pulls from moderndanish.com

Pendant lights: Portfolio, from Lowe's

Nook drum pendant: Forecast lighting Urban Oasis pendant from littmanbros.com

At some point I'll decorate/accessorize. But amidst all our continuing remodeling, keeping it clean is about all we can muster.

Beautiful! I love the way the glaze on your cabinets makes the details stand out. Do you find the birdcage knobs/pulls hard to keep clean? Your floor and counters look great together! It all comes together just beautifully! You did a great job. I hope you're enjoying it.

~ "Love your drawer organizers. May I ask where you purchased them? " I actually found those at Lowes for $23 each. A very happy find. ~ "How wide are your pots and pans drawers? Do you have two, or more? Are you able to fit everything comfortably?" There is a 24" drawer unit to the left of the range and a 21" unit on the right. All four of the lower drawers are used for pots and smaller pans and the top two drawers store my cooking utensils (spatulas, ladles, spoons, etc.) The actually drawers hold an impressive amount of cookware. Right now I have in them: 1 - 4qt saute pan 3 - 3qt saucepans 2 - 3.5qt saucepans 2 - 2 qt saucepans 1 - 1.5 qt saucepan 1 - 2 qt saucier 1 - 1 qt saucepan 1 - 8" skillet 2 - 3qt steamer inserts 2 - nonstick skillets ... and the lids for all of them. The only pans which don't fit in those drawers are my large skillets, large stockpots (12 & 16 qt) and the wok. The skillets are hanging on those hooks set up off to the right of the range and the stockpots & wok I keep stored under the island (as they are used less frequently).

The floor is a semi hopscotch pattern. The 13 x 13 brown tiles vary in color and match perfectly with the granite. The lighter 6x6 tiles we really feel break up the darkness of the floor and look great. Whats great is the 6x6's will match perfectly with the tile back splash. We are using 2x2 witch are the same color as the 6x6's we are also doing a decorative pattern along the wall and something special I'm going to make you all wait for for the "wow" factor. The granite is called bay brook brown it has light and dark browns, black, cream, and golden flecks. the granite perfectly matches with the floor and you can find all the colors in it. those who say you cant do a total gut renovation on a budget must be crazy. All it takes is some shopping around. We spent many weekends in Lowes and Home Depot picking the perfect tile and ascents I think we are proof of what such little money can do and we are very proud of that!

The granite is called Terra Brazilis. The photos I posted were taken without a flash because the flash was making a glare on the granite. Here's a photo of the big picture with a flash (more white). To do a close-up of the granite without yellow and without glare will probably require a photo in daylight, which is pretty scarce here lately when I'm home. I'll try to do that later. japper: yes, I still love the granite today. I find myself stroking it, and gazing lovingly at the gnurled brown patterns. Go for the DIY! It doesn't have quite the detail that this thread does, but it might give you some idea. We're off to MKE early tomorrow for a few days. We're going to help my sister and her DH put in a linoleum floor, remove wallpaper, and do some odd jobs. See you all when we get back and try to decide on a backsplash. I'm thinking of cream-colored matte finish subway tile with a decorative border of some kind running through it, but I could easily change my mind. I need to go immerse myself in the backsplash bio. Well, the GC told me he could get me in my house by Thanksgiving this year (he started last April), but I didn't quite expect this to happen, and it didn't. I figure I should be in by March... I'd also hoped to order a heirloom turkey (small) through Whole Foods -- more flavor and better dark to white meat ratio, and it would only be a once a year at the very most splurge. Then I broke the leg, and decided manhandling a turkey in and out of the oven was going to be a bad idea, even if it were small. BUT I am thankful that my house IS coming along, and that me and GC still get along, and that I'll be retiring sometime the first half of 2016, and that I now have my first ever great-nephew - who, unfortunately lives in Florida so I haven't seen him in person yet -- I probably won't meet him until early-mid-spring now. But I am grateful he's around and he looks a lot like my brother! I'm thankful for the wonderful people who've been helping me and dropping off Asian (and other) dishes, and taking me to the doctors when I need to go, and dealing with kitty litter... I was able to make myself an excellent braised turkey thigh recipe, and I stuffed some delicate squash with a sweet potato / cranberry / apple mixture -- and I didn't have to decline any desserts because I didn't make any! I hope everybody has had, and is still having, a great Thanksgiving weekend!

I am still loving your kitchen and are impressed at the skills you and your husband have. Is that a Braun range hood that looks so nice?

I love the counters and the Rialto Beige Tile with the Mushroom grout.

Your kitchen looks lovely! So lovely that I'm stealing your floor pattern -- just ordered my tiles and went with squares of alternating sizes so i can do as you've done. Thanks for the inspiration!
