Unfortunately, this isn't a particularly fun birthday this year. I just found out yesterday that my job is being eliminated in 6 weeks, so I'm getting myself worked up to get into job hunt mode.

I'm in a pretty good position financially, but this isn't at all what I was planning on.

My job was eliminated a year ago. I was so close to retirement age, I decided to just retire! Would have been better to work a couple more years, though. At least the job market is picking up. Enjoy that unemployment compensation for little while!

Michael, Crud! Enjoy today with a health mind then tomorrow jump on the job hunt routine ASAP--assuming you will be looking--as we all know your chances are better to get a job when you have a job.

Thanks, all. I'm having a rip roaring birthday working on resumes and applying for jobs inside my company. There are some open, so I have a shot at least.

All in all, I think I'd rather be spending the day some other way.

Fortunately, my finances are in pretty good shape, so if I have to I can live off savings for awhile.

My friend Dave, who has a very solid sixth sense about stuff like this, doesn't think I'm going to come anywhere near having to do that, and that I'll have something lined up pretty quickly.

I hope so.

On an amusing note, I learned today that my next door neighbor also has a birthday today.

Fingers crossed, everyone! I applied for a position at SAIC earlier today, and just a bit ago heard from the recruiting manager. She wants to do some screening on my work background. This is one that I know I'm qualified for based on the job description.

Yes, I've got everything crossed. And it's darned uncomfortable, too. (grin)

Well, a little bit more information. It's listed as contingent, which may mean that they don't have set funding.

The ways the requisition is worded, though, it sounds as if they're ready to hire someone right now.

It's confusing, and I'm again flipping back and forth between optimistic and very bummed.

I hope I'm not being too much of a downer for everyone. I just have never dealt well with things like this. My imagination starts to run wild, and I imagine the worst case scenarios - losing the house, jobless, homeless, stuff like that.

I don't know what that says about me personally, but I don't think it's very good.

I really appreciate all of you listening and putting up with my whining, and for your birthday wishes. It really does mean a lot to me.

Happy Birthday, Michael! I know something perfect will come along for you. Fingers crossed on the SAIC role... Contingent may just mean contractor in this case, and I've done lots of those, and it has never maent "temp"/short-term for me!

OK, things are looking up. I've got three interviews lined up from the 7 jobs I applied for, and it looks like I'll have another one lined up tomorrow.

First interview is Friday.
