Did you buy the drop and spill insurance with your ipad?

It's $91 for 3 years. Worth it or not?

For a kid, yes. For us, no. I figure the technology changes so much, I am insuring something that I will probably change out anyway...

I've had my ipad for 3 years now. I wish it would die so I could buy a new one; however, other than a shortened battery life, it's still great for my needs. I did drop it on a tile floor 10 days after I purchased it and the screen shattered. After doing some googling, I found that Apple will replace the screen once. I went to an Apple store, and, indeed, they did. For free!

I've been more careful since.

cathrugg--my DH is in IT as well. He helped to some degree with set-up, but not all that much. Not only doesn't/hasn't he used Apple devices, he has been super, super busy lately, so I've been figuring out a lot of this on my own (some trial and error, some via internet queries and searches). I might have email set to manual already, have to check. My Push notifications might be on though, so that might override the ability to set email settings? Brightness set to auto, I believe (automatically dims in lower light situations). Have to check maps setting. I have iPad locator "on", but I think my other locator settings are off. Running down the battery, and then fully charging it (leaving it on the charger an add'l 20-30 min past reaching 100%), helped a great deal. Now if it's 100% when I go to bed, it's either still 100% when I get up, or it's only down 1% or 2%. It also stopped dropping by 10% or more by the afternoon when it's sitting unused all day. Made a big difference. I'll take a look at the things you mentioned and report back! I really am enjoying mine. Would love to have the 4G of the newly unveiled iPad (I'm spoiled with the speed of our home Wi-Fi, so using my iPad on 3G when I have to, does seem a little slow to me at times). When I get a 4G phone and use that as my "hot spot" though, it shouldn't really matter. Not sure how much diff the A5X chip/quad core processor will make vs the A5 chip in the iPad 2, though the demo at the big unveiling yesterday supposedly showed a big diff in speed. Would love to compare the screen resolutions (iPad 2 vs new iPad) side-by-side, to see how visible the difference really is to my eyes. Would not be happy with the increase in weight and thickness, so all in all, I don't feel too bad about getting an iPad 2 instead of waiting for the new one. Mine's 32 GB, which won't be available in the iPad 2 with the release of the new one, so I guess mine will be a collector's item soon! LOL

A jug of Febreeze. I'm quite sure the guys in my son's dorm never did laundry the way you and I think of laundry...they Febreezed--EVERYTHING--shirts, jeans, sheets, towels, probably their armpits...lol I second the OTC med/first aid kit. Send the minimum until you know the kiddoes your son will be rooming with. Things like Sudafed can be abused. Still...I wish we'd done this. There was one very miserable night when my son (no longer in the dorm) called to tell me he was sick. Based on past experience, I knew immediately he had strep...probably 103 fever, raging sore throat, chills, in short he was alone, several miles from a store and miserable. I can guarantee you I spent a miserable night as well. While he was at the pharmacy the next day, I made him stock up on Tylenol and such. Extention cords and power strips. My son's dorm room had two outlets. Boys seem to need their electronics...Xbox, DVD players, Speakers system. Hopefully you can coordinate with the roomie so they don't overlap too much. Personally, I'd love to see game systems banned for dorms, but I'm sure schools fear no young men would come to school. lol Remember, you can't prepare for every instance. What you hope to see when your son or daughter goes away to school is some of the resourcefulness you've taught over the years. Do they know how to find information? Do they seek out the best way to do things? Can they face a challenge and deal with it? (Like getting a ride to the store when they don't drive. It's perfectly do-able.) Have fun and remember to enjoy these next few months.

Insurance dropped my 23 year old son. Any ideas for coverage?

Most colleges have some sort of student plan that will cover accidents on campus. If he is an automobile accident, there would be auto medical insurance that would pay before any other policy would. In fact, usually regular insurance would refuse to pay if there was any coverage available from the automobile accident policy. Don't worry about being responsible for his bills. He is over 21. Legally, he is responsible for his own bills. Just remember that. If by some remote chance he gets into a serious accident, just be sure that when you are asked who is responsible for this bill, you say he is himself. Just because you are paying for his college, does not mean that you MUST pay for all his bills. Do not sign anything that agrees to this. What would happen is this. Suppose that he were to get into some very serious accident. (not much chance of that happening, but suppose) At some point, since he is unemployed, the hospital would seek funds from somewhere. If you did not volunteer to pay, the hospital would seek state aid. Don't cross bridges and worry about things that will probably never happen. Just remember. He is an Adult in the eyes of the law. He is no longer your child. You may feel morally responsible, but you aren't legally. Perhaps it is time for him to get some sort of part time job that at least, would pay for this sort of thing.

A person who owns a home can file a claim to the insurance company that they pay a premium to-THEY pay the premium and in most cases it is up to them as to whether they use that money for repairs or otherwise. If they have a mortgage, usually the check is made out to the homeowner and the mortgage company-and because the mortgage company is part owner, they want the damages fixed and will normally inspect the project to assure that something they are vested in is repaired. It's the same with owning a car-if you own your car and get a dent, insurance will pay you but if you don't have it financed, you can choose to fix it or not with the check. The down side to that is-if you do not have it fixed or the home repaired with the money, the insurance company can refuse to renew your insurance when the time rolls around.

Dee, Apple told me they would NOT replace a shattered screen! About 2 months after buying my ipad mini, the flimsy flap cover fell off & I dropped it in a parking lot, cracking one corner of the screen. I complained about the stupid flap thingy (that's all they sold for accessories at the time) and got a shrug. I've since bought a better cover that Apple came out with a few months later plus a padded case, but still have the cracked corner.

They no longer replace for free...guess how I know. Lol I do not buy the insurance, but I now buy an Otterbox case. It makes it heavy but protects it very well. I have dropped it, face-side down, onto a hospital floor that was very hard (likely concrete underneath), and you could not even tell. :)

I got the insurance. It wasn't much money and I didn't want a heavier protective case. You'll likely spend something for protection anyway, be it the insurance or a case.

We generally have not bought the insurance. However, we have a local guy who knows everything there is to know about Apple products, and he repairs on site. Quickly and cheaply. He's replaced screens and batteries and performed other maintenance on our Apple products (phones, ipads, laptops) that have extended their lives much longer than we had anticipated. He also gives great advice when to upgrade, which new versions are worth buying, and so on. I've had my iphone for 6 years due to his occasional help. (Unlike the rest of my family, I'm not into upgrading just to upgrade. I call my phone "vintage Apple." They think I'm crazy because apparently it would cost nothing for me to get a newer phone, but I don't need a newer one.)

He's stereotypically what you would think a young, techie guy would be... Ask around, and see if you can find a similar resource.

I have insurance on my kids iPhones, but not on mine. I wish I had it on my iPad mini as somehow I cracked the screen about an inch from the bottom all the way across. I am so bummed as I truly love my iPad mini and any imperfections are a travesty.

I still don't know how it happened as I didn't drop it. I may have somehow squished it somehow - that's how it looks like it was just smooched enough to crack the screen.

I have resisted getting it repaired as it is still totally functional. The iPad minis have a retina screen and to replace the top glass is $200. A regular iPad is much less expensive. I have the iPad mini with cellular service, so it was more expensive and if I don't get a new one for xmas, I'll get it fixed.

So, long winded, but if you're paying $400-$600 for an iPad, the insurance might be well worth it.

No, I never have, and even my first gen ipad is still just fine. I just make sure to get a case that has good corner protection.
