Another request for positive healing thoughts

Regardless of my bickering with my MIL, I do care about her-and dare I say-I love her. But now we're in a critical situation with her. We've just gotten back from visiting with her new Dr., an oncologist who specialized in sarcomas.

My MIL has Leiomyosarcoma, a type of cancer that originates in the muscular tissues. It apparently was in her uterine muscles when she had a hysterectomy in 1999. In 2001, the sarcoma had grown from her abdominal wall and resulted in major surgery and removal of most of her colon, bladder, rectum, and vagina. But she was declared cancer free. We never knew she had cancer when she had the hysterectomy.

In Feb of this year she had some more tumors, several benign, but one more sarcoma on her colon...again, we weren't aware of this. I should clarify, my MIL probably was told in medical jargon but she didn't know what it all meant. A CT scan a few months ago now revealed additional tumors on her liver. This cancer has spread and is inoperable. They will try chemo, at least 3 times, and reassess then. I personally don't have high hopes and the doctor would not come right out and say you've only got 6 months to live...but he was careful to note that it is non-curable and the best we can hope for is remission.

So I'm asking for healing energies to be sent to her. I pray for remission. Thanks.

Good news! Rick is going home from the hospital today. I got to speak with him last night, and he sounded great. He said he feels better than he has in a long time, his pain is greatly diminished, and he rarely has to take pain meds. He's been in pain for a while, but the doctor (not the one that discovered the tumor) said it was arthritis and put him on high dose Ibuprophen. He doesn't have to take that now. Yeah! Sally

What rooms are around the kitchen? That can also have an impact as to where the refrigerator is optimally placed. Refrigerators and MWs should be placed where they are accessible from inside and outside the kitchen...without those outside interfering with those inside! That usually means a location on the periphery of the kitchen but also near the FR or DR. I think you are correct to be concerned. Right now, your island is a definite "barrier island." Work flows from the refrigerator to the sink and right now you will have to walk around the island each time you need to get into the refrigerator. I also question whether there's enough room to stand in front of the sink when the DW is open (e.g., when loading). Most people seem to have 12" to 15" cabinets next to the DW to provide the needed room to stand. Yet another concern I have is that your range is on what looks to be the most heavily traveled path in your kitchen (but cannot be sure until I know what rooms are where). Ranges/cooktops should, ideally, be protected from traffic...you really don't traffic jams while trying to take a pot of boiling water across the path and kitchen to the sink. Do you have a pantry elsewhere? Right now you do not appear to have that much storage room in the kitchen. This is partly b/c two of your "walls", south & west don't exist. And, while it looks very nice, the angled island does waste space. What are your current aisle widths? 42" is s good width (some are OK w/36" if it's not a thoroughfare). Perhaps if you did something like this... No, it's not fancy...but it's simple and, IMHO, functional. You might even consider making your range & hood your "bling"...your "Wow!" factor! You might consider either moving the center island more to the center...but then you'll need a prep sink either on the center island or range wall (to prevent the center island from becoming a barrier b/w the sink & range) Sorry, can't speak to the wine issue!

Dea, it's good to see you here, but I'm sorry you are having trouble. You will certainly be in my prayers for a good report and a speedy and complete recovery from the surgery. You were lucky to have a competent and caring doctor, as many doctors take a "wait and see" approach. I hope everyone will pay attention to your message about bloody discharge. I had a bloody discharge in one breast when I was 23 years old--it was from an intraductal papilloma (benign), which was surgically removed. When I was 26 years old, I had bloody discharge from both breasts (enough that I had to wear pads in my bras). My beloved doctor sent me to the National Institutes of Health, where I had a complete ductal excision of both breasts in 1975. I was fortunate--there was no malignancy; however, the doctors at NIH said that there was a good chance that it would have eventually become malignant. Brings to mind that old adage, "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." Needless to say, I get them checked regularly, and don't let things go.

I know you were joking about the bean bag chairs but when my rottie/mastiff was recovering from surgery, my nieces and the neighborhood girls came in after school and on weekends and setup bean bag chairs, floor pillows, and blankets on my living room floor so that they could lounge with Grace and keep her calm and happy to be still. They played board games and cards and watched endless movies. It was so helpful to me-- and absolutely precious. Both Grace and my other dog Beau have since died but it's one of my favorite memories. Thrilled to hear that she's doing so much better-- this is great news!

Hi Pesky, cancer is such a horrible horrible disease, I will keep remission for your MIL in my prayers too. I'm glad you've been able to put your own personal differences aside and focus on the big picture, that's hard for a lot of people to do.

I'm really sorry that your MIL and family is going through this. My father died of liver cancer 18 years ago. He had been fairly healthy - no other cancers, but was a recovering alcoholic. His cancer was caught very early, because he had a scan after treatment for kidney stones. They treated him really aggressively, and his quality of life in his last year really suffered. I feel that he would have been better off not having such an early diagnosis, and had a chance to enjoy his life a little longer. He had just retired a few months before the diagnosis and cancelled a long planned trip with his twin brother to Puerto Rico. Hopefully, treatment has advanced in the intervening years, but sometimes doctors encourage treatment when the odds are very poor and the patient may be more comfortable in their remaining days without it. Terriks, I hear you. When I was 21, my mother was diagnosed with inoperable lung cancer. She died 4 months later, which was 3 months prior to her scheduled retirement from her 25-year career with the federal government.

The treatment caused her much pain and suffering. Always quite tiny and bird-like, she completely lost her appetite and had difficulty swallowing even liquids. She had miserable burns on her neck and chest from the radiation.

It can be hard to know how to proceed...hindsight is always 20/20. But you make good points about quality of (remaining) life issues. We were told though, that she would not only beat her cancer, but would emerge feeling better than she had in years, post-treatment.

Pesky, I'm sorry you're going through this sad and difficult time. I will pray for peace and healing for your MIL, and guidance and wisdom and strength for you, your family, and your MIL's medical team. Sending you a hug too!

How tragic for her and for her family. Of course I will pray for all of you and especially her that she doesn't have to suffer and that her days are filled with love.

Yikes, I just read what I wrote last night and perhaps I shared too much of my personal story. I'm sorry, Pesky, if it burdens you to read my mother's sad details. That was a long time ago.

I didn't intend to sound so negative. My dh actually works in cancer care, so I am well aware there have been incredible advances in the field in the last 20 years.

Again, I offer thoughts and prayers for healing, comfort and peace.

I will be praying for you MIL, pesky.

My mom has gone through two different chemos for her lung cancer. She hasn't been on anything since May, and her hair has grown back, she feeling good (of course, not like what she was before her first chemo) can go shopping, etc. The drs. are wanting to put her on the Tarceva pill now, and she is not going to do it. Although, controversial, if any of you have read Suzane Somers book "Breakout", that is exactly what my mom went through with chemo, and it was awful. If we had it to do over again, my mom would not have done anything, and we all feel like she really would have been at her best if she had not done any chemo at all. I wish we could find a place where people who hasn't done chemo, to see how they fared, like a website or group, etc. At least she is feeling good now, but, who knows how long. We have found it hard to find a good caring doctor, that isn't in it for all the money they make off cancer patients. We are rushed though like a herd of cattle in dr. visits. I have a new dr.for her to go to, if she will.

I'm sorry to hear that your family will be dealing with this. My husband works in Radiation Therapy and he says that they sometimes treat inoperable patients to help shrink the tumors and relieve pain. I know its done with brain tumors because of the pressure in the brain.

I hope your MIL can get some pain relief somehow and can have a decent quality of life. It is so hard to know how much another person can deal with. I send my prayers to you and your family.
