Crowded House tour -- seeing them in two days...quiet little omg

Hi folks...just thought I'd ask if anyone else either has the album "Intriguer" or even better, has seen CH on their most recent tour yet. We're seeing them (DD included) on Thursday and I just cannot wait. Only got 6th row seats but I imagine I'll be up front, singing and dancing. They're like that.

If you're at all interested, the album is brilliant, but a grower. It feels like what would happen if W.B. Yeats and Tom Waits sat down at a bar table together for an evening. Neil doesn't write about only the typical rock song topics--he's honest to his age and to his experience, through a poetic lens, which is so incredibly touching and immediate. For instance, my favorite song today is "Even If", which gives you an idea of how my day has been going...

I don't have the album and haven't seen their recent tour, but boy, this brings back memories! I was in college when they were in their heydey. Will have to dig out their music!

Glad you folks enjoyed it. The coneflowers seem to be popular with others as well. So far, all have over-wintered here though we don't get severe weather like you folks do in the rest of the country. The hardest thing they had to endure was about thirty inches of rain from November to May. All of the coneflowers you see here are in their second or third year. The gigantic pink flowering mound in pic #7 was planted two years ago and now it is exploding. There are just a TON of flowers coming. This is another part of the coneflower difference here, these are the FIRST wave of flowers from my plants as Summer comes late here(and stays into October many years). The double-dark red/orange cone flowers are 'Hot Papaya'. I'll be glad to save you a seedhead Dax, and it will help if you remind me here or email me around October/November. Is this how they propogate? I'd love to have more. Ken, still a few projects left but the only major project is the grass which is gone probably in the Fall of 2012, replaced by rock paths, a sitting area and perhaps a water feature. I plan on having NO grass at all after 2013/2014. Ken, the conifer I think you're referring to in pic#22 is a Picea glehnii cultivar that Bob Fincham contributed to the garden. I'll have to look up the cultivar name. I'll work on some 'before pics' as well. This is the best I have for now: After. -Will

kirkhall the north side/wall is at the top of the drawing, the south at the bottom. (the north arrow is shown to the right of the first floor). The wall facing south is the one with the front door, so its where the sun comes from most of the day. just fyi, there is about 7.5 ft ceiling height 5 ft from the south wall in the master bathroom, and there is a dormer in the center, which adds extra ceiling height (although not where the toilet is shown) (Also the dormers are not very clearly drawn...sorry about that....these are my drawings, so you know...drafting standards are lax, or rather non existent....) having the master suite upstairs in these cape style houses is tricky, in my opinion. the layouts in these houses are really constrained with the reduced ceiling height at those walls. however, the overall style has a lot of appeal for many reasons for us (appearance, energy efficiency, cost to build, etc.) the ridge runs east to west, and there is a lot of height there (entrance to master bedroom, loft overlooking below, and guest bath) I was originally advocating for the master suite on the first floor, for one floor living if necessary. DH has successfully argued for keeping all of the "public" areas downstairs, and "private areas" upstairs. Upstairs will have a cozy feel. He says we can always put an elevator in where the closet by the stairs is (1st floor) if we have too (I bet that's not cheap!). I'm with you on walking into the master bedroom facing the closet. it doesn't seem ideal for sure. I'm open to ideas. just keep in mind, that big window in the dormer on the north wall in the master bedroom looks out over the property and has views of the mountains. I don't want to block it with a closet. kelhuck re point 1) - i didn't even think about that. We toured a house with the stairs arranged just like it, and thought it was great. That's a good point though. I've thought about the stairs quite a bit, but never from that angle (odd in retrospect). They also had a little more space between the stairs and front door than I'm showing. 2)laundry - yeah, this is a big one for me. I go round and round on this:) The trade-off is to just have a laundry closet, but have the laundry upstairs, or put it in the mud-room, have more space, but have to haul laundry up and down stairs all the time. right now, i'm leaning towards not caring if the laundry clutters up the loft a bit, but there is not much room there at all, its only barely works. currently, my washer and dryer are in our garage, which is not conditioned. I bring baskets of laundry back into our bedroom, and process everything there. S, its not far fetched to have a small closet, but the appeal of a little room I can close off is strong. I swear I want a new house just for a space conditioned laundry room:) 3) pretty much, yes. the appeal of timber homes is showing off the structure, those gorgeous timbers. all timber homes I've seen have a least some two story view inside. however, there is strong sentiment on this board against it, that its loud. since I've never lived in a house like this, I'm inclined to listen. its a valid point, especially when its more than just the two of us (guests and/or kids). even just making the open to below over the foyer instead of the tv/family/living room may solve that. I dunno yet. I'll have a chat w/ dh about it later. 4) dont' worry about insulation, the entire house is going to be wrapped in SIPS. initial calcs for the efficiency we are looking for are calling for 10" SIPS, whereas almost everyone uses 6". No worries, this house will be tight (and require mechanical ventilation). we are focusing heavily on the envelope, so our budget is focused on SIPS and windows. I may even hae to sacrifice my nice kitchen initially (blasphemy!) in order to pay for it up front, but we'll see. liriodendron - that's awesome that you are using PV. the price is coming down, so its actually starting to make sense to pay for it, instead of just being for people like dh and me, who just have non-mainstream tastes and interest (energy nuts, sort of:) the property was logged 5 years before we bought it, so it doesn't have many trees (no trees anywhere near the home site) (and its an ugly mess, we've just now started re-planting). the south facing garage roof will have full sun all day. if it weren't for that, we would angle the house more, so the back faces the mountains a bit better, but we didn't want to sacrifice the front/south wall of the house with respect to facing the sun too much. we like PV just cause we think its neat, and we're trying hard to justify it, but it may be a few years down the road before we consider actually paying for it.

I saw the photos of this masterpiece the first time around but was thrilled to sit through a more extensive tour - even if I had to remove my boots. Ha! newdawn, when we bought our house, the heating/lights/water bill here was more than our old house's mortgage! igloochick, you will have to put in intercoms for DS and any future ice cubes... My kids were young when we moved into our house and they would loose me. My house isn't nearly as big as your will be. We painted our house for $17,000. You have one lifetime project ahead of you.

Annie, In pic 77 (I think you're referring to the one with a tall red sculpture to the left) the tile on the fireplace is reflecting all the light from the doorway I was standing in. The red sculpture is sitting on a stand on the other side of the fireplace and that is a glass doorway to another room on the other side of a hallway. When I zoomed in on my pic I can see a person standing there reading the booklet. Many rooms had so much natural light it was difficult to take pics, yet many of the bathrooms were so dark I couldn't get a good shot with the flash. One other feature I forgot to mention..... most of the living rooms had a wall of folding glass doors that opened to a furnished deck or patio. All very lovely. Here's a closeup of the girls room. Those look to be rhinestone discs and they've also placed them in each tufting on the headboard. gscience, I loved most of the bathrooms but getting full shots of showers was very difficult, so I just focused on the tile work! :)

kim, YES, by all means dig them out :) I saw them first in 1987 at the Beacon, when they were touring in support of their first album, which I took home from my music industry job and fell in love with. But no one else seemed to know them (except for that one song).

Happened to look them up again on Youtube in 2006 just for the heck of it, and WOW, what I missed...DH jokes that he still remembers the day I e-mailed him that I'd disappeared down a CH rabbithole on youtube...the rest is fanclub history :) I love Neil's work both in CH and with others. Don't know if you know what happened...but they have a new drummer now who's pretty much half Neil and Nick's (and Mark's) age, who's a great fresh presence for them, like Jovi is for Mason :) Time On Earth is a masterpiece, and this new one keeps growing on me every day.

What did you know about them? Where do you live, btw? In the US?

Hi flyleft, sorry it's taken me a while to get back to this. My old-lady cat (18 yrs old) died this week and I've not been good for much. :(

Honestly, I don't - or didn't - know much about Crowded House, just that I liked the music! I never saw them in concert, unfortunately, but some of my friends did.

I live in West Michigan, and was there for college, too. I can't remember how close they toured to us, perhaps in Detroit.

Hope you loved the concert! Was it everything you expected?

Oh gosh, kim...I'm so sorry. I know it's meager solace, but I'm thinking that if your dear one lived to 18, she loved you and knew you loved her. What more can we really ask for...

Feels kind of odd talking about anything else now, but it's very sweet of you to ask about the concert. Since you did, I'll tell you -- it was BEYOND even my expectations. They're amazing. The band was TIGHT and could still jam so well, so much better than I've ever heard them, in fact, it was not like a pathetic "reunion tour" but more like a real band that just keeps getting better and better with age. Neil Finn is what I've decided to call a poet-composer-rocker, not just a songwriter. Our daughter had a blast, as did the many kids (2nd generation Crowdie fans :)) in the audience. We spent the night basically on our feet, dancing, singing...it was WAY better than 2007, which I thought was magical enough for a lifetime anyway. But these guys are *growing*, in their 50s (the new drummer is younger, though), and doing brilliant, innovative stuff that I think is partly influenced by his own son, Liam Finn, who's a growing musician in his own right (as is his other son, Elroy, but Elroy doesn't have quite the track record yet).

I've attached a more traditional CH song from the new album, "Twice if You're Lucky"...it is special to me because I think Neil saw me singing it to DD and hugging her (we were only 6th row--the song's written for Nick Seymour, his bassist, and Nick's first child, born when Nick was either 50 or close to it, upending his life as he'd known it, and Neil has two grown sons, so he's moving onto a new phase as well--never just one line of meaning in his songs) and when he finished (we were all pretty much still seated at that point), and I rose to give him a standing ovation, he looked at me straight on and said "thank you"--my DD can verify it--she said "Neil just thanked you". *sigh* :)

And finally, in honor of your departed dear one, here's a song by Neil about his dog Lester, that he wrote when he was *14* years old, and he was afraid Lester was going to die when he'd been hit by a car...

WOW -- nice to 'meet' you! :) Have you seen them on this tour?

And ACH, so near but yet so far re moving to NZ. At least you've been there, and it sounds like, gotten to know it deeply. You sound really kind of soul-connected to it, if you quote Maori sayings. Even from here I can tell it's the kind of place that can have that effect on one.

Superficial side note:(been to Kare Kare? :) Someone on a forum I frequent has a pic of a traffic sign there that points people either in the direction of Piha or Kare Kare...both significant in the NF lyric universe, as I'm sure you know...I'd die happy if I could see either one)

We too researched moving to OZ/NZ but I think OZ was even earlier, something like 50? I'm turning 50 this year but I knew even several years back it was just not going to be a reality. DH could probably have found work, though, and of all things the work in my old field (literacy) is groundbreaking in NZ -- or at least was back about 15 years ago...maybe next life...sigh.

So have you seen them/grown to love Intriguer yet? :)

Can't believe I missed this thread, fly! Whew. Busy wiping tears from listening to "Twice If You're Lucky" which I love-especially considering the inspiration since we have a quite magical dog at the moment and I can't bear the thought that he won't live forever.

You do need to go to NZ someday. I was about your age when we went (now I'm 58). I think the distance is what caused DH to drag his feet. I teach, so we have some of the same background in literacy, I suspect. I still get emails about Special Education job openings which only feed my wistful dreams. Have been to Piha, but not Kare Kare. We were only in Aukland for a couple of days-DH loved the city, we wanted to get out in the rest of the country. Is your email on your page? If not, email me. I will go into more detail and not bore everyone else! I have a picture DS took of DH and me at Piha.

Oh, have not heard the new album in its entirety yet. Plan to download to iPod when DH takes a break from the computer some day-so irritating. Do like Archer's Arrows (is that the right title?) a lot and of course, "Twice..."

Oh and was the concert wonderful?

I'll e-mail you...but just in case anyone else has the good taste to open this thread :), I'm including one last link--the video to "Either side of the world" --which could be a NZ anthem, IMO. Or a CH/fans anthem. "Luxury and leisure never meant pleasure....we like it different--passion and commitment" MASTERFUL synesthesia, lovingly humorous clips, great, completely character-appropriate inclusion of the guys including the elusive Mark Hart :) It's like a summation of their entire essence. The way Neil looks at Sharon in the last clip when they are starting to dance...almost everything about them makes me laugh and cry at the same time.

He has already :). I think it was just one of those things...never seen him with facial hair before...and it pales in comparison to Liam's bushy, bushy beard, so it did him no favors LOL
