Help-want to learn to crochet so bad!

I have wanted to learn to crochet for so long now and I have given it a few tries but I mess up every single time. Does anyone know if there is a good step by step book that would teach me to crochet?

You need to check with the local Craft supplies places...like Michael's...they offer lots of classes, including crochet. Hand's on instruction is so much better than a book...so, do some checking around.

If you want to crochet that badly, try "I taught myself to crochet" book by leisure arts. It is true hands on is better, but the book is informative and does show you how to at least start your work. Check your local papers, sometimes they have craft shows and the women there would be more than happy to help show another crafter "how to"

This is a common problem with crocheting. You must be sure to do the turning chain which is in your pattern, then work back into the last stitch from the row before. You are reducing your work each row if you don't do this. Make sure every row you work is the same number of stitches--count as you go. f&t, that link was the best! I guess partly because I already crochet I find holding the yarn in my left hand makes sense, I was fighting doing that because I thought it wasn't the right way. It was nice to find, either in that site or another I went to, someone said there isn't just one right way, if it works for you it's right. I already knew that about crochet and suspected it about knitting. After I've worked with this method a while I will learn the other way (throwing?) if for no other reason than because I can but also because it seems to be a good way to switch colors more easily. I want to download the videos but on dialup it takes a long time and I don't want to tie up my phone line that long. Maybe I'll remember to dl them at night. Thanks for the help!

Do you have a local yarn shop or a Micheal's craft store near you? Both, here, run classes. Or maybe a nursing home or senior center that would have someone older that is confined do to mobility problems, but can still crochet and would love to have someone to teach and become a new friend? There might be restrictions at the nursing homes, but it couldn't hurt to call there (ask for the activities director) or call a local senior center. I also learned both before the internet. I started with a magazine and the basic instructions in the back and sat down on the sofa and kept trying. My grandmother had tried to teach me to crochet and that was a major frustration for both of us. A guide is needed, but in the end, you need to practice until your hands get comfortable doing something new -- holding the yarn in a way you have some control on tension as well as the hook or needles and then manipulating them to make loops and pull more loops through them. In the end, it's just a lot of variations on that theme. If you have a yarn shop, they probably have classes and may be a good source for help when you can't figure out what you've done or need to do next. It might help to have a book, magazine, pamphlet or something printed in front of you. A computer screen might work for you, and you can do video tutorials. I' sure there are you tube videos as well as classes. Craftsy is another source for online classes. I've taken a couple of baking classes that I thought were very good and suggested them to my sister when she wanted to learn knitting. I'm not sure which one she started with, but she found it helpful. You get online videos you can stop, start and easily come back to (they remember where you left off), can ask questions and my baking classes had printed materials too. Start with one to try -- both so you can see if it works for you and because they have had some sales. I wouldn't buy ahead until you've tried one, liked it and they have a sale. But that's me.

Starvingartist-I am going to take a look at what you sent me and hopefully that will help me out. I have wanted to make like a baby blanket or afghan for so long and I can't even get one started!

If you go to a book store I'll bet you can find a book that will have all the stitches in the back. I taught myself to knit and crochet by that. Look also in crochet magazines. If you are left handed though it will be much harder. Then you can scan the pages and "Flip" them and print them. Check the internet for "How to crochet" and you'll come up with loads. The basics are easy. If you want I can send you email on how to. Just email me.

I found the next-best thing to having someone teach me in person is to watch a video demonstration. Go to www.youtube.com and search for "crochet" and you'll find many, many teachers. I've done it for different knitting techniques and learned a lot.

There are videos there as well as many helpful forums and free patterns galore... I stumbled across this site the other day - it is a wealth of info and exchange of ideas and helpfulness...!!! Wow!
