Who Sells on eBay? I've Got a Question

I emailed a Seller yesterday asking if he/she would accept a check or money order as payment for an item I was interested in, because I refuse to use PayPal. This is the response I got. "We are unable to accept money orders or checks from our customers because Ebay has install new payment rules".

My question is...what new payment rules has eBay installed? It's been a while since I sold anything on eBay, but I was thinking about listing a few things, and I've always accepted checks or money orders as payment. Do the "new payment rules" mean I can no longer do that?

My first instinct was that he was just saying that... however, I did just find the following on Ebay:

"Other payment methods

Checks, money orders, and bank wire transfers are not allowed for most eBay purchases.

However, sellers may offer these payment methods for certain categories of items including vehicles, capital and business equipment, real estate, and Adult Only items.

For specific exceptions, see our Accepted Payments policy."

Purely marketing considerations. A) Ariocarpus are highly collectible, and subsequently have a lot of people searching eBay for them. These sellers figure that although the plant not be what they are actually looking for, they might be inspired to buy one. B) However, particularly in the case of Lophophora, they are just trying to get around the fact that is is illegal to sell this plant in the US (and other countries I'd guess). Of course the people at eBay can't tell the difference between true Ariocarpus and peyote, so the auctions continue...

Update! I got home tonight and found email from the seller saying she would refund me all of the money. She has asked that I ship the bedskirt to the next buyer (she is re-listing) and she will reimburse me for the cost to ship. I told her I would be happy to ship to another buyer and thanked her for finding a fair way to resolve the issue. The money was back in my account within minutes. I expect she will reimburse my shipping costs. All correspondence was within the eBay system so it is trackable. Lisa, as for the suggestion to ask for details, I hear ya, but that is a rabbit hole. I mean, where does it end? The dishes I got ripped off on were listed as "New." It never occurred to me that they were new but seconds. Yes, I should have asked, but it just didn't even cross my mind. I'd like to think that if someone says 18" in a listing, I don't have to ask if it is indeed 18". Roselvr, I did not wash the bedskirt, just ironed it. The Dish Witch would have accused me of having washed and shrunk it! Nicole, I am glad your PayPal experience was positive. In my case with the dishes, PayPal was not willing to refund me the return shipping costs. I would have been out $25 and even then the seller was threatening to notify the police that I was scamming her. I don't think she actually would have had a leg to stand on, but I just wanted it over with. Red, if I order something that shows up defective, I will often call the company and have them pick up the tab for return shipping. It's only fair. I am glad your sconce situation worked out. I do use my dishes from the Witch! And they were a lot cheaper than they would have been from Replacements. Yaya, I have a PayPal account. I have always used a credit card that I have registered with Paypal. Is a "buyer credit account" something different, something with more protection? Thanks everyone for the advice and commiseration. I'll let you know in a week if I get the shipping money refunded. I am optimistic that I will. The bedskirt is already re-listed. Stay tuned! :-)

Thanks ronbre, for all your thoughts, there are some good ones in there! I love my house, but there are some things that were not well thought out by us, but that was because we were living in a FEMA trailer and wanted out of it in a hurry, so we found this houseplan and built it pretty much as is from the plan. The back door and the breakfast nook and the fireplace could have used some tweaking in where they were placed, but we were in such a hurry we didn't catch that. Weren't even in the house 2 years, when we got hit by another hurricane, and flooded with 3 ft of water, so again, we were in a hurry to get it fixed and get back "home" rather than living somewhere temporarily. I have always wanted a fireplace with a mantel to decorate, and so I think it needs to be a focal point, but obviously the big tv is also a focal point. My recliners are both actually a chestnut colored leather, one is just darker than the other, as we didn't decide we wanted two when we purchased the first one, therefore they are obviously from different dye lots. =( Again, my mistake, that's what I get for being in a hurry! But I definitely want to add more seating in this room, not just move around the chairs that I have now. I need a conversation area and so that is why I am thinking two club style chairs for either side of the entertainment center or adding a loveseat. Then I could make the reading nook like you are talking about by the window!!! The ceilings are great to look at and to have "mood lighting"(DH calls it nude lighting in the bedroom...ha) but it also makes me think things have to be centered off of the ceiling, like the entertainment center or our bed for example. You answered one question about the art with the red in it. I figured it was too big for that wall, but just wanted to see what others thought. It would only have about an inch clearance around it. I am also looking for some kind of chest or demilune table for that little wall. Trying to make that DH landing spot for keys, wallet etc, instead of the bar in the kitchen. The nightstands in the bedroom are the same height, the lamp on the left is a little shorter than the one on the right, I just thought they probably shouldn't be taller than the headboard of the bed. It's not real easy to reach the lamp to turn it off from bed. I need a console/buffet, more seating, coffee table, end table, lamps, rug, artwork, drapes. Accessories, I'll worry about later. I just want to get my big pieces set first. I have "hurricane fatigue" and just want this done and pray that we will have a quiet season this year, so we can actually relax and actually enjoy our home.

People love to tell horror stories, Lily, but there are plenty of happy stories you probably haven't heard. Ten years ago my son was selling the occasional piece of ham radio equipment on eBay, and I asked him to list some of his father's chemical engineering books for me. He said no, he wanted me to learn to sell on eBay myself because i would love it. I was resistant, but he was right--all it took was one good sale for me to love it. Like most of us, I just had to get over the hump of that first listing. It seems intimidating, but eBay wants sellers and they make it easy. As for the horror stories, I have none to tell. When you set up a Paypal account they'll ask to access your bank account. It's a simple matter to open a new checking account (usually free) just for Paypal, keeping a low balance on the very slim chance it could get into the wrong hands. Mine never has more than $300 in it. As for Craigslist, it, too, is easy--plus it's free. Scammers love it but they are usually easy to spot. The Craigslist site issues warnings, spelling out what to look for. A scammer is unlikely describe what you're selling by name; instead, they'll mention your "item." A famous scam offers to pay by Cashier's check. You will quickly get a feel for the authentic email from a real buyer. You don't put your contact information in the ad, unless you want to. I never do. Buyers contact me via an anonymous email address, and I decide which ones I want to respond to. Except for the time I sold a piece of equipment too heavy to move, I meet all my buyers away from my home, at public places. Again, I have no horror stories to report. If you've bought at 40 years worth of auctions, I'll bet you have some stuff collectors would love. You could have a blast doing this, Lily. Alisande..I'm just not comfortable entering my bank information (off my debit card) and it being kept "on file". I know a lot of people use PayPal and shout praises to it, but I've also heard/read some horror stories, and I just don't want to run the risk of dealing with that.

I love Paypal. I've been a member since 1999, before it was even Paypal. I've never had a problem with it. In fact, twice I've had to file claims against sellers and paypal settled without any difficulty.

As for bank account information, heck it's on your checks! Better to have it stored with one main source than to be sending it to every seller you do business with, who may or may not keep it on their files.

I read that Ebay was restricting payment methods because their highest incidence of fraud was with transactions where cash (checks or money orders) was sent directly to the seller.

You cannot state in the auction that you will accept checks or money order. It is PayPal only, but if someone emails and asks to use a money order or check it is ok to accept it. Anyway that is how I am doing it.

I have my credit card on file with PayPal but not my bank acct. info per se; I think people think that is needed, but it's not. I don't think you have to "get verified" for ebay purchaes.

Now, maybe I was grandfathered in from a while ago and the policies have changed and you do have to enter that info to use Paypal, but I know I never gave out my bank info and I buy from ebay sometimes. You may want to look into opening a PayPal account (without getting verified). It makes you think you have to get verified, but I really don't think you have to for Ebay purchases. Again, you will probably need a credit card though.

I too have been using Paypal for years and have never had a problem. I don't have a credit card registered on there any more as I don't sell alot so it seemed unnecessary. I do have my bank account info listed, and I check my bank account daily to make sure my money is still where I put it.
I think Paypal is very safe, they are very fast to act on a fraud complaint if there is one, and I think as long as you know what is going to come and go from your bank account/paypal account/ebay account you'll be fine.
As Tally pointed out, your banking info is right there on your check. There are lots of scammers out there, any one of us could get hit today or tomorrow or may have been hit and we don't know it yet.
The key is to keep track of what's going on, pay attention, check things regularly and report any irregularities. If you do all of that you will be as safe as you can be in today's world.

I've yet to hear anything bad about Paypal. My sister is a big seller on eBay and her problem is only non-paying bidders. She's never had a problem with Paypal. I've bought a lot of stuff on the internet, not only through eBay but other sites as well, and have always used Paypal without any problems. It's VERY secure.

I love Paypal. Your money transfers are so much better protected when using it. I get concerned when I go to sites that don't accept Paypal.

As others have said it is very secure. You can transfer funds to anyone who has a Paypal account. Friends,family or business.

I don't have a credit card (and don't want one...lol), so I guess setting up a PayPal account is out for me..because I refuse to enter my bank info online anywhere.

Why not just open a back account and only use it for paypal? I do that and only keep a little in there to pay for my paypal purchases. I started this years ago when I was afraid to by anything online....now it's the only way I shop! I have had no problems with paypal and they always resolve any disputes I have on Ebay.

Do what I did, I opened up a new checking account just for my ebay buying & internet buying. They will give you a debit card. Only keep a small amount in this account $100 or less so if something does happen thats the most you can lose. Use a different bank that has nothing do to with your main accounts. Better to be safe then sorry. Then go open up a paypal account. I've had mine for years and no problems.
