We Can't De-Ice Our Planes!!

Imagine if it snowed!!!

Officials at Orlando International Airport are keeping an eye out for ice Thursday morning.

Deicing is something that's not usually required at local airports, and OIA doesn't have the equipment used to remove ice from the planes.

The threat of ice on the wings of the jets poses a serious threat to operations at OIA. Work crews aren't equipped to handle the cold weather because the airport doesn't own any deicing equipment.

Pilots are forced to sit their planes in the sun until the ice melts.

Wow Liz,
We are experiencing a blizzard in Chicago. I'm flying to Brussels as purser at 5:30 this afternoon. I hate being delayed with a full airplane. We have 30 passengers in first class. Guess where I'm working? I'm sure we are going to be in a very long de-icing line tonight.
Last month I flew with Miami pilots. They aren't too familiar with our winter weather. It will be a long wait for you without de-icing equiptment.

What's a purser, Donna? Someone who carries something?

Sounds like you are dreading the trip. Sorry; maybe it will be better than you think.

Thermador Freedom Freezer--Can't Get Ice Working

You didn't say which models you have but I've installed a few of these. 1. you need to see the word ice in the control display. 2. your bucket needs to be locked in place and fully pushed back. 3. most Icemakers won't produce ice until the Freezer has been running several hours. I usually tell my customers that they wont see ice until 12+ hours have passed. The Freezer need to get cold enough for ice and the icemaker needs to cycle a couple times before water gets to it. 4. the Freedoms seem to make their fastest ice production when the freezer is set for -4ÂºF. At least thats what their techline told me. 5. Is the water actually turned on? 6. Is the filter fully turned and locked into place? I have seen a couple units where the filter was not fully turned to lock and that shuts the water off. I hope this helps Jakvis

I like the Cote de Texas blog. It's a lot like.... me : ). Let me explain that. My mom is French. I was born in the states but my first language was french. When I was 6 we moved to France for my Dad's job and lived there for about 3 years. We then moved to Austin, TX where I lived for 8 years until I went to Houston for college. I attended grad school in the TMC and met my husband in Houston. In all I lived in the Houston area for 19 years until DH and I moved with the kids to the Carolinas in 2008. I'm French and I'm a Texan (thus the username "southernfrenchie".) I get that Joni's style is not for everyone. It is definitely french with over the top TX flair. She definitely works with the upper crust. While I appreciate her blog I myself prefer a lot more color. Those photos are eye candy for me - a glimpse into how the other half lives. I can get an idea here or there - and will figure out how to implement it on my Home Goods budget : ).

Hi, all. We've kept our power, but I've been down most of the weekend with a migraine. *sigh* One of the OKC stations is reporting 120,000 without power in Oklahoma right now, and 10 dead so far in vehicle accidents. We have really dodged a bullet here in NW Oklahoma so far. They say the moisture will move northward today, and another batch will move in tomorrow - so we may not be out of the woods yet. We are grateful that we only had a little bit of freezing rain, a moderate amount of sleet and frigid temps so far, and we are "feeling the pain" of all those who have been hit so hard. DHs boss called last night and told him not to go to work today. That's only the second time in 20 years that's ever happened. All of the schools are closed, of course. Hope everyone else is safe and warm.

My friend is flying to the Bahamas, for a week, as I type. Hope the cold doesn't follow her.

A purser is the flight attendant in charge of all issues pertaining to the flight. I deal with the pilots, catering issues, the gate agent, the sequence of service, medical/emergency, passenger complaints, rest breaks etc. It's a lot of responsibility. I did not choose the position, I was "bid denied" to fly it because we are short pursers. I was awarded a different trip that was not a purser position. I would like a break from flying purser.
I just hope we don't have a long delay tonight. We can be on duty for 16 hours.

Glenda, it's already there...we thought about escaping this FL weather on a bahamas cruise but found it almost as bad there. heck the Keys were only in the 50's yesterday :-0 we're having record breaking cold over a record breaking length of time.

orlando & Jax will have sleet and freezing roads tonight and there's a snow watch on for orlando for tomorrow! OIA will still be on an ice-ing alert for Fri-Sat a.m. orange juice jumped 8% in the last few days and apparently FL supplies 75% of produce during this time of yr to the rest of the country (according to NBC news) and most of that is toasted. so expect high prices on anything not grown in your own garden basically. glad we didn't put too many tender veggies in yet. it will be nice for all the weeds and bugs thou LOL! ~ liz

I'm on Florida's Space Coast, not too far from Liz and I can tell you that we're having one heck of a time dealing with this weather. I know it sounds like I'm whining, as so many of you are having much colder temperatures but here in Florida, we're just not equipped to deal with this weather. Personally, I like to have some cooler temps and I would love to see some nice snowfall but there are a lot of people that have no heat and they are really suffering. Out power companies are having a hard time handling the demand for power. My power was off for several hours on Tuesday night. It's amazing just how many businesses in Florida that have NO heat!!! When you live in an area that's known for rough winters, at least the area is prepared and people know what they're in for.

Sending wishes for warmer weather soon to all of you getting this freeze!

I just read in my Philadelphia Inquirer that the poor iguanas in Florida are falling out of the trees because they're freezing. Now we don't have anything too exotic living in the trees in my area- just the usual chipmunks, squirrels and birds. I take that back - chipmunks hibernate in the winter. But the thought of walking down the street and seeing an iguana fall out of a tree is something to think about.
