I love threading! My girl doesn't speak a lick of english, but I don't need to understand what she's saying 'cause she does such a nice job. So much better than waxing.

I love threading! I recommend people go where it's done by experts though, otherwise I've heard it really hurts. The places I go . . .that's almost all the women do, all day.

Just curious what do you ladies pay for the service? I travel two hours (one way) to get my haircut and they offer threading. Only the shop owner does the process she is from Iran and was telling me she learned as a small girl how to do threading and said it was just as common there as using tweezers here.

Full face is $50
Is this pretty typical or more expensive than what you guys pay? Also are the results more long term or does the new growth come back just as quickly as waxing or tweezing?

judie, I'm 54 and know just what you mean. I have never heard of threading. What the heck is it? I wonder if it is available where I live and what the average cost is.

groomingal, I guess it depends on the area. In the Chicago area, you can expect to pay less than $10 for eyebrows (used to be around $5, now it's more like $7).

I know it is very common in India, probably Pakistan as well. I didn't know it was common in Iran, too.

I'd say it is about the same as waxing, longer than tweezing.

Gosh I would love to have my eyebrows done.

DD1 has been having her eyebrows threaded for years, in CA. Loves it. I don't know of anyone who does it here. :(

This place is pretty inexpensive,(suburb of Boston) $6.00 eyebrows $25.00 full face. It was really quick and not too uncomfortable. I'll keep doing it. Goldust, the link posted by anele pretty much explains it.

And it really doesn't hurt as much as waxing?

I had my eyebrows done once and it was just to painful. I heard that if you drink lots of water before you have it done it helps with the pain. If I ever have my eyebrows done again I'll drink a beer first! lol

holrbak: Did you go to a place where they are really experts? The only people I've really heard complain are the ones who go to a spa place where threading is done by someone who doesn't do it regularly.

RE: pain of waxing vs. threading . . .I don't think it hurts really at all, but even waxing does not bother me. (It's over so fast.) People do have different pain tolerances, though (I think redheads tend to feel pain the most, and if they are male . . .even more so.)

Allison, you don't have any neighborhoods where there is a strong Indian population? If you do, you might want to call around to the salons in that area.

I know of it and it could be offered in the *big city* near me, but I don't think it's really caught on here.

I have to do very little plucking, in fact my brows are getting a bit shorter, so tweezing is fine with me.

I just had my eyebrows done for the first time, thanks to this thread :) All the inexpensive places I found online are an hour away, but I happened to be in Princeton this weekend and saw a sign at a downtown salon. Way overpriced because of the area, but the woman was wonderful.

My brows are pretty light (I darken them a bit with a pencil), so I get terribly lazy about tweezing and have never waxed because my skin is sensitive. The threading did pinch because my brows needed major shaping, but I found it sooooo much easier than doing it myself. She applied some aloe gel because I did get a little swollen (normal for me, even with plucking), but I don't think I'll have that issue again so long as I keep up on it. What I like best is that I now have a pretty, natural arch that I just couldn't get myself. And, it was so quick.

I'm definitely a convert and will start asking around to see if I can find anyone closer and less expensive.

I had my brows and chin area done last week for the first time for $15. So fast, it was amazing. It did hurt a bit, but I could never have done the job that fast and that well. This girl was from India, and she had a long lineup of women waiting.
The cream she put on afterwards took the sting away immediately.
I'll be going back for sure.

How odd. I've never heard of this. I'd rather shape my own brows with a few plucks. What's the advantage of this?

Peytonroad: This is pretty strange, but if you're not embarrassed by having it done in public, I was recently at Tysons Corner Center and there were 2 little "stands" in the mall where women were doing it. If they were not smack-dab in the center of the walkways, I'd look into it--but I do not want to be sitting there with all those strangers walking by--or maybe even a co-worker or boss!

Squirrel, I don't know how old you are, so I'm guessing that you are young enough to not need any kind of help fixing your face. LOL

For me the advantage is that I can't see well enough to pluck my own (blond) brows without glasses.

I also cannot see to do the chin area properly, because my glasses are bifocals, and when I lift my chin, I lose focus.

I always swore I would not turn into one of those old ladies with long hairs all over their face, and this is a way I can avoid that.

I see, Homemaker. I actually am struggling with makeup and such because I need glasses these days. I was lucky to have my eyes for so long and am totally not used to this. Reading glasses weren't so bad, but now the long distance. Frustrating. Especially since I often forget to have the darned glasses on me, lol. It's a real pain not to be able to see or see what you're doing! And I thrive on all things visual.

As far as I know, I don't have facial hair! Maybe I should check that out closer, lol. Don't think my Mom does, so I'm hoping I can escape that one. What a dreadful thought : /

It's certainly a very interesting technique and kind of fun to watch. Wonder how anyone ever came up with that. And such amazing skill!

It's my kids that point out my occasional whiskers. I don't see them when looking in the mirror unless I'm really looking for them. I need glasses for close up but rarely wear them while using the mirror. The threading gave me such a smoothness, and my eyebrows look better than waxing or plucking. I am definitely a convert. The place I go to has an Indian clothing store with a little room in back where the threading is done. It's clean, private and cheap. My Mom doesn't have the facial hair either and shes 80.

You guys are so lucky. I've had facial hair since I was a teenager, but of course it's getting heavier now that I'm in my 50s. I've tried electrolysis, but that is not permanent, and it's very expensive, and painful.

Plucking -- instant gratification, but also pretty much instant regrowth.

Waxing -- waste of time and money, and hard on skin.

Shaving -- I'd look like Fred Flintstone and feel like a cheese grater by the end of the day.

My eyes are getting worse and my facial hair is getting worse and it is NOT a good combination. Once you get over the initial "Oh my, does my face really look like THAT?", the mirror is a big help.

I'm skeered.

I agree that good eyebrow shaping can make a huge difference in appearance.

Kinda OT, but has anyone checked out The Makeover Guy's makeovers for women over 45? Some great transformations, wish I could afford it.
