Dry lips remedies?

Has anyone else been suffering from dry, peeling lips? Mine have been dry...I know it's partially due to the cold, dry weather, but I'm tired of having flakes around the edges and it's so uncomfortable. I've tried every chapstick, lip balm, carmex, blistex, etc out there. I put stuff on them as often as I can. I even got the Mary Kay satin lips stuff, but nothing works. I drink tons of water, so I'm extremely well hydrated, so I know that's not the issue. Any remedies you can suggest?

Have you tried olive oil? You probably have it in your kitchen, and I find it's one of the best remedies I've tried. I don't even use vaseline any more (which was always my 'go to' dry skin remedy) because Olive oil just works better.

My #1 advice is to avoid anything with petroleum in it. That means just about every popular, advertised brand. They actually dry your lips more.

I would see what your health food store has to offer.

I hate Blistex and Chapstick and Burt's Bees and every other lipbalm I've ever tried. The only thing that works for me is Palmer's Cocoa Butter Formula Lip Butter (Dark Chocolate & Peppermint flavor). It tastes great, looks amazing (people always think I'm wearing lipstick, even though it's clear), and works beautifully. If my lips are in the state you describe, all I have to do is put some on before bed, and when I wake up, my lips are perfectly moisturized. I love it to the point that I buy 10-15 of them when I see them; out here, very few stores have it, but I can sometimes find it at Walgreen's. In the Midwest, Meijer's usually has it. Help! Swollen Cat Lip Again!

Although a spider bite is possible, I believe the OP is referring to Eosinophilic Granuloma, since the cat has been to the vet before and given steroid to reduce the inflammation I recently saw a cat who developed abnormally large swollen upper lip, as a result of a severe flea allergy. 3 shots of steroids in two week intervals helped get it under control, and so did flea treatment.

We buy a gelatin based product called Laxaire from the vet. Feliz loves it (it looks like it might taste of beef, but I'm not going to find out for myself) and it helps control hairballs. When she goes into her twice a year shedding spell, she still gets a hairball or two, but nothing as bad as it could be!

Try preservative free eye drops. The preservatives in many non PF eye drops can be toxic to the tear producing glands. You can also try an ophthalmic mineral oil preservative free ointment before bed and even during the day. A little dab (much less than a "dab") will do. I take a clean index finger, put a tiny dot of the petrolatum ointment on it, then apply it to the lower lid margin and beginning of the eyelash area. The oil will migrate onto the surface of your eye. I found it helps a lot. Puralube by Fugera Labs may be a better price and is the same thing as the "high priced spreads." I am going to assume that you e already gone to a good eye doctor who is cluey about sicca syndrome, dry eye and other related conditions? One thing that sound a bit odd but that can help tremendously is having liTitle silicone plugs "punctual plugs" inserted into the puncta (those little drain holes) of each eye lid margin (corner). It can help preserve tears by keeping your natural eye wash tears from leaving. Caveat -- MY OPINION: I would caution against anyone rushing into having the eye(lid) puncta cauterized. Your tear production may not always be scanty and you could end up with an overflow. That can be irritating and is no picnic. The silicone plugs can be removed. The scarring from cauterization is pretty much permanent. Another thing to be aware of with cautery, is that, occasionally, eye lid tissue can vaporize away. Oops. That could leave a messy bit of tissue to cope with. For whatever reason, knock on wood, my severely dry eyes got much better. I am thankful that I did not have the punctal tissue permanently ablated. Best wishes and comfort to anyone coping with dry eyes. PS Ditto to outsideplaying's suggestion about gently bathing the lid margins. Blepharitis can also interplay with eye dryness.

I quit using regular chapstick. I now only use the moisturizing one. WAY BETTER!

Do I just rub the olive oil on my lips, like a massage? That sounds like it should work. :)

I use a hand lotion made in Germany called Glysomed - a hand lotion. Started using it after buying from the local Mart. They quit stocking it so I had to order it online. I have extremely dry skin even after drinking lots of water and this is the only product that works for me. I read that Avon has a similar hand cream with a couple of the same ingredients. DH uses it a lot on his dry, cracking elbows and for his breakouts of dry, itchy back. It took him a couple of years to dry it but now it's the only thing he uses.

I have to order this on line too, unless I happen to be in AZ and can pick it up. Arizona Sun Lip-Kist. It's a sunblock lipcare with SPF 15. They make other products too, like hand lotion, moisturizers, etc.

I use Glysomed too, but only on my hands, never tried it on my lips. I'm never more than 10 feet away from a lip-loppy at any given time. I really prefer ChapIce made by OraLabs, but will use any brand in a pinch. I have them in pockets, drawers, cars, cabinets, just about everywhere in the house. It's the only thing that keeps my lips comfy. And even with all that, occasionally they will still peel. I think it's natural to have a little peeling, sloughing off of the old skin. Sometimes I'll buff my lips with a warm, wet washcloth. That helps.
