How do I add garter stitches to eliminate curl?

I already made my daughter a scarf, just about done, already 3' long. It's my first project, done in stockinette stitch. But it's curled. I figured I'd deal with it at the end. I looked up this problem on this forum and found advice that I should add a few garter stitches at the end, or seed stitches, but it's too late for that now, I think??. Or I should double-crochet something at the edges. (Separately, maybe even a completely different yarn?)

Any help is greatly appreciated.

It's too late to add garter stitch now. Not sure about the edging, maybe someone else here can help. Curly looks cute though!

Alas, it is probably too late for this particular scarf. Your daughter could just wear it as is, and, if questioned, proudly proclaim: "It's the newest designer feature! Everyone is doing it . ." and she would NOT be fibbing! The dreaded stocknette curl has to be PREVENTED, not remedied. Starting, edging and ending a scarf with garter stitch or another non-curl stitch/pattern is the only thing to do.
But why limit yourself to stockinette scarves? If you can knit and purl, you can make wonderful, reversible scarves in interesting patterns. Try something in a rib - it will not curl, it is thick and cozy, and the pattern is the same on every row. Or seed stitch - if you cast on an uneven number of stitches, every row will be the same also (k1, p1). Or "mistake rib", which looks complicated and elegant - cast on a multiple of 4 + 3 extra stitches, and every row is *k2, p2*, repeat until you have 3 sts left; k2, p1. Looks especially good in a variegated yarn.

i talk to anoles, too. :) in fact, we- me & the kids- put them and green tree frogs in the cool greenhouse for the winter to help with bugs. don't know that it's worked, but it is fun looking for them. the big male likes to sun on my bird's perch, and he likes to flirt with me, bobbing his provocative throat pouch at me so i'll be impressed. i bob back at him and tell him he's handsome. hb- i can't say that i'm too surprised the racer was striking under those circumstances. i think i'd try to bite, too. lol. glad he didn't take off. i haven't seen ours around since he got in the net, but didn't see him before that either, so no biggie. we sight a big king snake once or twice a summer- i think it's probably the same one we've been seeing for a number of years. we kept a couple rough green snakes as pets for a summer in our terrarium with some anoles and skinks, and they were so cool. they hung out and curled up into knots together- the thing that surprised me most- and were like living sculptures. the anoles got used to them within a day or 2. they were also complete pigs, which is part of why we let them go, fat & sassy, ready for fall. when we released them, they hung out in the same tree for a couple of days- i guess they thought it was a big cage. we got some good pix of them there. my kids and i wouldn't mind having another snake, but i don't want anything that eats furry things, which eliminates most of them, unfortunately. as an aside, i haven't found a single garter snake in the 13 years we've lived here. lots of other kinds, but no garters. i thought they were ubiquitous. probably one of the coolest was the ultra tame milk snake we found one day. gorgeous markings! worm snakes are cool, too. tam

I just got my shipment yesterday and my leaves are only up about 4". Yesterday I couldn't see anything in the middle but today I can start to make out the design. I guess the lights and heat made it happy. Thankfully it must be a late riser because I am about ready to eliminate the early birds from the landscape. I only purchased 5 hosta this year and they will probably be the only ones that will look nice this year. Sure sorry I didn't order more!

Catherine, thanks! What about spraying individual sick plants or hitting individual weeds with roundup? That's my normal method. I use an organic gardening stuff for my lawn -- is that okay? Unfortunately we have a mowing service, and they ride around at top speed on those huge mowers. There are sections of the yard that aren't mowed, though. I could possibly add a water feature in one of those areas. Re: the water feature. Would one that isn't in the ground be of any help? One of those ponds-that-are-actually-a-tub-of-water-that-stands-on-the-deck kind of things? Or does it need to be something the toads can hop into and out of and such, something at ground level? YIKES! I never imagined opening this thread and finding a stitched body! LOL Barbara, it sounds like you "have a life!" Even so, I can't help but think that maybe the other four feet should have been done in between those Thursdays. LOL Just think, by the time you get the scarf done, you'll have a new coat and need to find someone who can use a nice homemade scarf for a gift! ;o) My very first afghan took me 7 years! I keep it next to "MY chair" and every time I sit down, I pick it up. I have a self-rule, I need to sit for about 2 hours early in the afternoon, to get my feet up for a while. So I turn on the TV and grab my knitting. Lindsey, The "purl" stitch is my favorite and that is the one I can do w/o looking (and seldom make a mistake.) When I try to do the knit w/o looking, I end up needing to pick some stitches off. That I hate! Sandy, LOL as it got bigger the "hot-flashes" increased! I had to hang it over the side of the chair instead. Sorry girls - You can't have it cause it matches my bedroom! It is just big enough to throw another layer on top, on the really cold nights, or like now when the heat is almost turned off. I'm really taking a likeing to that baby yarn and the thinner feel. It's plenty warm.

We do not know the type of yarn you are using, so that makes advising difficult. You can steam iron the scarf to help a little--just be sure you do NOT shove the iron around. Lift it up and set it down, holding it steady for a moment and then lift it again. I wonder if some kind of crochet edge might help a little, even a slip stitch edge. However, you will always have curl as it is not truly fixable after the item is made. You really need to make it with a stitch design meant to eliminate curl. Having said that, a couple of years ago GAP sold a completely curled in on itself long scarf, so I did one like that on purpose--but my son thought I made a mistake.

Thanks all for your advice, I hope I can flatten it a little bit but it's still very nice. I will try to double-crochet on the ends (???--I'll have to try to figure this out) because on one of the threads somebody I think tried this and it worked somewhat.

I never really knew how to knit before; a director showed me the knit stitch to play a crochety lady in a play and that's all I knew, and remembered on my own with a knitting book from the library and figured out how to purl. (They did NOT warn about the curling stockinette stitch).

Thank you all again! I feel so much more confident now that I know it's not so terribly difficult after all.
