Cold air return vent questions

We are DIY remodeling a 30 yr old ranch house which originally had electric baseboard heat and central air. Within the past 10 years geothermal was installed. New duct work was installed for the heat and the existing ac vent was used for the cold air return.

When we removed the ceiling it was noted that the there were three vents in the kitchen originally. Apparently, during one of the remodels, one vent was closed off. We now have the option to install all three vents again, but I'm not sure if it is necessary.

The room is ablong, about 15 x 35 with the kitchen at one end and family room at the other.

Why should we or why should we not install all three vents again, and how far from the walls, or where in the room should be vents be located?

I'd bank that the guy who decided three vents (and the associated duct work behind him) knew better what was necessary than the guy who decided it was expedient to block one off.

Are there dampers near the supply plenum on the duct runs to balance airflow to the rooms?

From what source are the 3 diffusers fed; from one duct run or more?

The 3 diffusers maybe sized correctly when all three are used, otherwise the static drop may be too high.

We would only be guessing from here.

Yes this house is pretty strange. Its an old farmhouse and when they put in the oil furnace (which we don't use) they just sort of slapped the registers here and there. We basically just stopped the cold air with batting and sealed it up with duck tape (neon pink). its already made quite a difference.

Is it OK to vent dryer to the cold air return

Don't do that! If you hook a dryer into the HVAC return you'll blow lint-fines all over your ducts and quickly clog the heat-exchange radiator in addition to quite obnoxiously heating and humidifying your entire space every time the you run the dryer. Bad news! Sounds to me like you found the actual duct. Explore that. Assuming its the right one, verify that its clear to the outside and use it.

I was considering fresh air hooked to the return, but then I thought of the ultra cold winters and how that would affect my heating and also the positive pressure in the house would push all the conditioned air outside. Instead I installed make up air with a passive damper in the dryer room that lets fresh air in when vents are running (dryer, bath vents, range hood). My house is fairly tight during the winter (less tight in summer due to removable storm windows), so I get fresh air when I run vents. Either way when you push air out of the house you pull air in (and vice-versa). I dont have passive gas appliances so I dont have to worry about backdrafting. If I did install gas appliances they would be power vent, I am not interested in messing with the whole backdraft situation or having undampered open holes to the exterior. When I moved in I had a standard flue with a gas water heater, and I got rid of the heater and flue when I re-did the water lines, used electric so I could place it where I wanted, monthly bill ended up being similar.

The same sq" of air that the face of it has. Lets say the grill is 10"X6" thats 60 sq". Now if you're 2" out from the wall. You will have 20 sq" there at the top and 20 sq" on the bottom and on each side you have 12sq". So the 2" out from the wall will let you have 20+20+12+12 == 64sq" of free air can get to the grill. So approx 2 1/2" - 3" away from the wall.

By code there should be NO Return from the kitchen or the bathroom.

Wow, this is way over my head. I'll call the HVAC installer tomorrow.
