How to mix different types of flooring

Hi! We're building and can't afford to put hardwood throughout the main level, and really don't want to because our 2 toddlers are hard on a house!

But, thinking of resale value, we would like to put some hardwood in the entry and main hallway. I'm wondering how it will look to have different types of flooring in the rooms coming off that main hallway.

We want to do vinyl in the kitchen and nook (across from each other on opposite sides of the hardwood hallway) and carpet in the family room (hardwood hallway deadends into the family room).

How are the seams done between the different types of flooring? I want a seamless look, same gradient, no worrying about dirt getting between them, etc. Is this possible?
