Rose Bowl Parade

I haven't seen much mention of it but it is on today. It is the onlyparade I really like to watch and most of the time watch it on HGTV

Here is what I found on it

The 121st Rose Parade will take place on Friday, January 1, 2010 at 8:00 a.m. (PST) featuring spirited marching bands from throughout the nation, majestic floral floats, and high-stepping equestrian units.

The Rose Parade will be broadcast on ABC, Hallmark Channel,

HGTV, KTLA (Tribune), NBC, RFD-TV, Travel Channel

and Univision. The Parade is also seen in more than

200 international territories and countries.

Never watch it.

I watch the Mummer's parade. A parade with a long history, participants are ordinary people who live and work here.
My Great-grandfather marched in the first organized parade over 100 years ago.
Mummery dates back to the 17th century.

I love it too, Minnie, love hearing about how many flowers/petals/seeds and how long it took to create the floats.

Yes, that's the tradition. I'm looking forward to seeing the Roy Rogers float because apparently there will be 100 palomino horses with it. Can you imagine that?! Will try to get a picture for the horse lovers here. For those who care--the two events are the "Rose Parade" and the "Rose Bowl Game." There is no such thing as the "Rose Bowl Parade." I've been to (too) many games and nearly every parade for the last 35 years! Missed a few when the babies were born and when I broke my leg. Happy Birthday, Bengardening, and best wishes for a great year in 2012.

Well, I'm about Bowl Gamed out! I enjoyed the Parade this year....specially since I found that HGTV had it on without breaking for commercials! I put the sashings on a quilt, got a cheater I Spy pinned and ready to sew on the lines and have my I Spy Swap ready to mail on Wed. I didn't do anything I thought I'd do today.....like to practice meandering. Oh well.... I got an email from my 13 yo DGD who has been up north since the 22nd, she's more than ready to come back home. She and I usually put a jigsaw puzzle together and watch the ball drop on New Year's Eve.......I miss her.... SharonG/FL

Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade

Being from Philly...we NEVER watched the Macy's Parade....we went to the Gimbel's department store parade on Philadelphia's Market St. Well, Gimbel's went out of business...but the parade goes on...this will be the 95th Thanksgiving parade, now sponsored by the local ABC-Tv affiliate, and other business sponsors. But, the big parade in Philadelphia is the Mummer's Parade on New Year's day. The tradition of Philadelphia Mummery started in the late 17th century as a continuation of the Old World customs of ushering in the New Year. Mummery in America is as unique to Philadelphia as Mardi Gras is to New Orleans. For example, the Swedes were Philadelphia's first settlers. When they came to Tinicum, just outside of Philadelphia, they brought their custom of visiting friends on "Second Day Christmas", December 26. Later they extended their period of celebration to include New Year's Day, and welcomed the New Year with masquerades and parades of noisy revelers. Most people carried firearms for protection in those early days of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and it did not take long before pistols and muskets joined with bells and noisemakers to create the sound of a New Year. Those who "shot in" the New Year became New Year's Shooters, and thus the name much later evolved to officially become the New Year's Shooters and Mummers Association. Groups would travel from house to house, sing songs, and perform dances -- all to be rewarded with food and drink. By the 1870's, what had been an uncoordinated group of neighborhood celebrations turned into an area-wide parade with two main groups of participants: Fancy Dress and Comic clubs. The City of Philadelphia finally sponsored and organized the first official Mummers Parade on January 1, 1901.

I have watched the Rose Parade since 1952 when we got our first TV. Wow, that is 57 years of watching it.

Yes, they are marching up the street now.
Agreement with the city happened days ago.

And again, they hope to keep the parade under 10 hours long :)

For the first 21 years of my life, I attended every parade...watched uncles and cousins march (string bands - most in South Philly, Hegeman and Fralinger).

It's on channel 17,and will be on TV all day.

Have loved parades of all kinds since I was a little girl. The Rose Parade has been one of the favorites always.... This year I'm more interested in the "The Antonio Project" on HGTV after the parade. I believe my afternoon will be watching the TV since the rains haven't let up and the thunderstorms are still headed this way.

One of the first bands was where all the members were either blind or sight impaired. Such a challenge!

I was just going to mention that I thought they did very well and added a new touch to the parade.

We just don't get the Mummers here and I'm sorry about that.

I also like watching the parade, usually on HGTV. Not this year, my cable company (Cablevision) has dropped HGTV and the Food Network as a result of a contract dispute!

So many beautiful horses, big and small, in the parade today. Excellent floats and bands too.

Wasn't it great seeing that blind band marching? Also was happy to see the Tuskegee airmen on a float and my hero, Sully, as the Grand Marshall.

We would have loved to see the horse groups, and many of the floats. Unfortunately, we don't have cable so we were at the mercy of two network talking heads who were more interested in chatting than in the parade. We saw very few floats, and then only briefly, and one horse group, the 1st Cav. The network's coverage was very poor.
It is a great parade, wish we could have seen it.
