furnace/airhandler located in unvented attic?

Be gentle, this is my first post! We are going to be building a 2400 sqft home in south Texas near the Gulf (humid hot, zone 2). I am either going to use conventional insulation on the attic floor with vents and a radiant barrier backed roof decking, or if I can afford it, an unvented attic with foam on the decking. My plans call for the air handler to be in the attic. My question is: can I have my air handler up there in an unvented system. I have read that it would be OK if everything was electric, but not with a gas furnace because it needs air. My current electric system still draws lots of air, so I am puzzled. Any help would be great as we are still drafting the plans and could still relocate the furnace/air handler if needed. Thanks
