Underlayment for floating engineered wood floor

I have read several posts and notice jerry t believes Sound Solutions is the best underlayment. I am trying to locate their web site and have not been able to. Anybody have their link?

Also, any other suggestions of other high quality underlayments I should consider? Thanks!

Laurie, what flooring did you choose? I am also interested in more information on the underlayment for an engineered wood floor.

I am still deciding but must wait to do my wood floor now after my tax season since I am now so behind from finally just about finishing the tile job. My job entails moving a lot of heavy office furniture with files in the cabinets so it unfortunately looks like the job may have to wait and I will have to keep steam cleaning the very light beige carpet every 3 weeks.

I assume you mean a concrete slab on-grade...yes? An installed moisture barrier (membrane or liquid-applied) and then a sound insulating underlayment is a fine way to go with engineered. That method would require that the underlayment and the flooring be installed with a suitable adhesive, if the engineered is to be permanently attached. With a plywood substrate, the flooring can be stapled to that. I have done many glued down engineered floors over cork underlayment with great success. Then you have the engineered that can be 'floated'...but I don't like the concept...personal bias. Regardless of which installation method you choose, you will need a flat substrate to begin with. As for 'cupping'...a wood floor will cup even if installed over a stable and dry substrate when the moisture content of the atmosphere above the flooring is lower than the moisture content below, but that is rare.

I have not used cork, so I can't speak about that. I have used many other underlayments including FloorMuffler. In my personal experience Sound Solutions underlayment is the best for what you are asking about. One person can't hardly lift and carry a 6ft wide roll of this. Three things you need to have to achieve a quiet and fairly solid feeling floating floor. The substrate has to flat,flat,flat. Use a premium underlayment. Pick a quality floor with excellent milling and a stout joinery system, and the thicker it is the better imo. I have installed this way before and it is very solid feeling underfoot. Most folks are surprised when they discover it's a floating floor.

I do not advise wood flooring in the basement usually. As for underlayment you need to talk to the flooring installer to see what they suggest .

Hi @jab2_0815! I love the floors, but we ended up ordering about 25% overage so we could pick better planks and avoid variation. They have held up really well. They still look new in our kitchen — no stains or scratching. I’d recommend them, but the variation is a bit more noticeable than the showroom sample.
