Cat owners - read this before installing engineered wood

Well, I learned this one the hard way. I'm about halfway through a room-by-room makeover of a house, where I'm using Bruce engineered hardwood flooring -- the 3/8" stuff from Lowe's.

It's beautiful and easy to install. But little did I know that it is EXTREMELY susceptible to moisture damage. I've had the floors down for only a few months now, and I already have two places where the cats barfed on a joint and the wood swelled, cracking the finish. If you have cats, you know barfing just sort of comes with the territory.

If I'd had any idea, I never would have gone with these floors. I suppose it's patina. But I also know I've never had this issue on solid wood floors before (and I've dealt with a lot of cat barf in my day).

I haven't gotten to the kitchen yet, where I'd planned to use the same floors. Now I'm seriously rethinking that strategy.

Oh, and Bruce's Web site doesn't let you contact them about things like this until you contact your retailer first. Very lame.

You have to be careful about making sweeping generalizations -- it sounds like your problem is with your specific brand of engineered floor. I have engineered wood floors (BR-111 Triangulo), and cats...that barf quite a bit. I have had no trouble with swelling wood or cracking finish. I've had cat barf sit overnight on the wood, and it cleaned up just fine, with absolutely no noticeable swelling. My cat went through a bout of liver failure lasting over a month which involved her literally barfing every couple of hours -- we kept her in the guest room, where she barfed all over the floor (and walls, and everything). You would have no idea that she had ever even been in there now, it cleaned up so easily (the only hard part is getting the barf out of the joints).

Heck, I've had my cat pee on one section of the floor (and I didn't find it till several hours after it had happened, and it had dried there), and it cleaned up so well with enzymatic cleaners that a) you can't even tell it happened as there is no swelling or change in the finish, b) the finish was so good at keeping out the moisture, and the enzymatic cleaner worked so well that you can't even smell the urine that was there even if you get your nose right up next to where it happened, and c) my cat has never peed again there since -- which tells me that we really got the stain/smell out.

I've been very happy with BR-111 as far as moisture and the finish goes -- we've spilled things, had cat barf and cat pee issues as I've mentioned...all of it cleans up easily, and the finish isn't marred a bit.

rivkadr, thanks for letting me know that BR-111 held up to the moisture since I am still considering it.

I finally found someone to do my tiles right now and I am upset that he forgot that he could use quarter rounds on the walls to cover the tiles that did not quite reach the wall and told me that he had to make a boarder before putting the diagonal tiles in or there would be tiny 1/4" and 1/2" small pieces going around. The small area is only 4" X 4.33" so I did not want a border to make it smaller. I love the color of the tile and that was a good choice.

I could not put the engineered wood in until the tiled two foyers were done since I did not want the grout to scratch my hardwood floors. I wish I had him do the middle foyer first that if he did not do the way I wanted, it would not be as big of a deal to me.

The only advantage to installing the hardwood (solid or engineered) UNDER your cabinets is that the floor may not have to be replaced if you subsequently remodel the kitchen and change its footprint. The downside is you have to pay for expensive wood that is hidden under your cabinets. I think putting the floor under the cabinets is a better choice when choosing tile. In your case you can simply put plywood the same thickness of your hardwood under your cabinets and then use hardwood for the floor. If you are on a slab you will have to use engineered. - Jim

I have Caesarstone Honed Pebble in my kitchen and one bathroom. I also have CS Raven in one bathroom. The Raven has been in for 6 mths, the Pebble for 4 mths. I love both. I will say the Raven shows water marks much more than the Pebble. Probably b/c it's a darker color?? Not sure. They wipe up easily but in a bathroom who wipes up the water spots all the time? Not us anyway. Oldryder is right, the honed finish does show fingerprints and oil compared to the polished finish of the Raven but they easily wipe away. Much easier than I expected them to when I tried on the samples I had. My guess is it's harder to wipe up on the small sample pieces as efficiently. A quick wipe with a sponge (which probably has some soap on it even if it's been wrung out) usually removes them, and if they are really greasy (probably 10% of the time) it might take a second wipe or some soap and a little scrubbing. Nothing over the top. And it's not like the fingerprints are glaringly obvious. I usually notice them if I look at the counter from an angle, or I sometimes catch them if the light is right. I kind of like that they show up, as it reminds me I should've wiped that section of counter. Fingerprints occur mainly on the edges of the island. Makes sense as people come in and lean on it all the time compared to the rest of the counter area. So if you like the feel and look of a honed finish, go for it. Don't be scared off by the "horror" stories of a honed finish. As for hot things, I had no idea about anything like toasters or coffee makers being a concern. I only knew about hot pans, which I use trivets for, or set on the stove. I've used the toaster almost every day and never had an issue. And I have an espresso machine on the counter at all times and no problem there. I know it's been fine b/c we've had to move it a few times as our kitchen isn't quite done and the counter under it looks pristine. As for chips, none so far, but I haven't had my counters that long.

I checked the price for a 4 gallon pail...but forgot to convert it to "per gallon". My mistake. Uptown has converted it properly. At those numbers, that is a LOW price for a high-end vapour barrier adhesive. Normally they sit above $2/sf for the REALLY good one's. "Limitless" refers to "limitless moisture barrier"...in other words the slab could be SOAKING WET and the glue will grab without an issue. Glues that REALLY have an EXCELLENT profile for "limitless moisture" are much more expensive than the Bostik. To use Bostik for the MOISTURE BARRIER (not just adhesive) it will allow 30-35 sf per gallon. The 50sf/gallon coverage is for adhesive ONLY (no vapour barrier = no protection from moisture in the slab = floor failure if the slab gets even a little damp). The EXCELLENT moisture barriers are $65/gallon or more. The Bostik is only $32.50 per gallon. Unless the company can PROVE you have ZERO moisture (that means testing) they MUST work with the idea that they have to use the adhesive as a vapour barrier. They MUST do it. The documents for moisture readings will come from the INSTALLER - not the retailer. An excellent installer with an excellent reputation for excellent results will ALWAYS do tests. And then they will test. And test. And before they install, they test. And after they install they photocopy and give you the original for all the tests they've done. The "average" installer may or may not do this. The "guys with hammers" don't even know what to test let alone how and why. After reading all of this, what's your gut reaction? What's their labour warranty? How long do you have to complain if it is an installation issue (which is 95% - 99% of all flooring problems)?

I have cats (and they are getting on the elderly side). Half the flooring is engineered, the other half the original oak. All litter boxes sit on a throw rug - so far none are having accidents. That said, if we reached that point I would lay down some sort of vinyl/plastic/resin material underneath the throw rugs and then put the litter boxes on top of those two surfaces. And yes, CP, the floor was done by previous owners - evidently they didn't want to spend the time or money to repair/replace what must have been severly damaged original oak floors in the living area.

dmdkc did specify the brand and where it was purchased, so I would not call that a "sweeping generalization"...

The title of the post does tend to lump all engineered wood into the 'caution' category, however...

But, the intention is honest and cautions consumers to be aware that some engineered prefinished flooring can be affected by a particular surface 'water event'...
