goodman 14 seer ssx14 vs trane xr 13 seer

What would be your opinion regarding which model is better. I am aware that Trane is a better brand than Goodman. For two reasons I prefer Goodman is fiances and I like the warranty that the Goodman model has vs. the Trane model. The Goodman model also has an energy saver where as the Trane model does not. They both will be the 410 models. Also if we are going from a 10 Seer to a 13/14 Seer will the breaker need to be changed?

As a longtime retired HVAC/R contractor, for a number of reasons I will not list here, I would go with the Goodman 14-SEER SSX14 using R-410A.

That comes with a 3-ton evaporator coil with a piston metering device; I would ask for a TXV metering device.

I always want the Copeland Scroll compressor with a TXV on the evaporator. Normally you won't need a start kit with that Scroll compressor.

Using Goodman's Expanded cooling data, I ran the numbers on a 16-SEER; a 14-SEER will have a little higher condenser temperature split.

An 85-F outdoor temp; with a 3-ton evaporator @ 900-CFM & dry bulb 75-F; 51% indoor relative humidity on a 2-ton condenser the condenser temp-split came to 15-F; delivers 23,500-BTUH. That is good for a 16-SEER system.

Get a humidity gauge & check other temps as illustrated to see if it comes close to a 15-F split at those listed conditions; if it is "too far below 15-F outdoor condenser split," "at those conditions," it may need some trouble shooting to locate the problems.

That is very good performance & illustrates why you need good airflow. A 3-ton coil will tolerate 1350-CFM, therefore 900-CFM is moderate airflow velocity through that 3-ton E-Coil. - udarrell

Like everyone one else, I'm looking for something reliable, efficient and relatively quiet at a fair price. I was happy with my previous system (Trane) which lasted 18 years; it kept us cool in the summer where it easily gets into the 100's 90+ days in a row around here, and warm in the winter which is very mild, rarely dipping below freezing for more than a few days. Granted my utility bills fluctuated with the weather accordingly ($120 to $380), so I'm willing to pay extra for a higher efficiency system (16 Seer). At any rate, would you agree that the prices I've been quoted seem to be reasonable? And if you have any specific suggestions on what models I should be looking at, please let me know. Thanks, TT

XR13 is a nicer model. You will have to decide whether it's worth the difference. According to my info, there is up to a 3 db noise difference between the two models. the XB13 is Trane's low end heat pump entry. Also, I would want the var speed TAM7 air handler for better dehumidification in AC cooling. 7 KW heat strip. HW Mdl 8321 thermostat. IMO

In my opinion, a new system is not worth a penny no matter what brand if you have duct issues. I put more into the checking ducts making sure they look good and marking down what I think can be improved if anything. Brand of equipment, manual j, whatever you name it, Checking the duct in my opinion is top priority if it is accessible. I went into 3 attics today. 2 had small issues and 1 was ok. The small issues will be fixed and the cost is minimal when the new system goes in if they choose us. I will say the Trane XR15 is a more close comparison to a goodman 16 which the XR15 cost less than the XL15i. You may want to ask about the XR15 if you are considering comparing a trane model that is a more budgeted A/C It is my opinion the most important part of buying an air conditioning system is the contractor who installs it. With that, a Professional who believes in what they sell will more than likely install it better than a company who will sell you anything that you want. I am not a big fan of companies that sell many different brands.

Post model numbers of condenser and air handler to compare SEER/EER as well as cooling btus. FYI: Baltimore quote in April '07 for 3-ton heat pump: XR13: 13 SEER, 11.5 EER, 34,000 btu cooling, $4600 XL14i: 14 SEER, 11.6 EER, 35,400 btu cooling, $5400 The XR13 had terrible heating btus at 17F and poor HSPF which doesn't matter to you if you are getting straight a/c. Quotes included 15 kw electric strips, condenser mounting pad, labor, and misc materials. 1 year labor warranty on XR-13, 2 years labor on XL14i. Good luck.
