Tipping the hair stylist
Comments (71)rthummer posted: lindsey ca--- blah, blah, blah, sit down and shut up until you know what you are talking about. I do not know what your profession is, nor do I pretend to know, so quit pretending like you know about mine. I have been an educator, a salon owner and have worked in a salon for some 30+ years. You do not know what you are talking about and I am not going to let you rattle on about something you know nothing about. I will not go into the details of taxes, insurance for employees, health insurace, retirement, liability insurance, education, rent, renter's insurance, etc. etc." Talk about the ultimate in rude behavior. I have only lurked occasionally on this forum and just aghast at how this thread went on and on. The escalation of rude remarks is just disgusting to me. If rthummer were a friend or family member, I would be horrified to be associated. Scarlett2001, If I was not happy with my hair and had it corrected, I definitely would not tip. Yes, items purchased in connection with a business venture are tax deductible, so rthummer's post again makes no sense. No, your stylist shouldn't be overly compensated for taking much too long to accomplish a task. There is no profession other than working at a convenience store that does not require some level of training. Even the convenience store clerk must learn how to run a cash register these days. The salary disparity makes me crazy as well. Ugh, I wish I never opened this thread as by blood is boiling. One last thing, any salon owner that accepts a tip is tacky, pure and simple. Low class. I am surprised that the powers that be at GW didn't pull this thread when it started getting ugly....See MoreHairdresser's tip
Comments (22)Okay - $55 for haircut - she is self employed and rents the space. I've gone to her for over 20 years. I pay her $60. Haircolor - $98 - she is an employee about 25 years of age. I pay $105. At those rates someone is making a decent income without a 20% tip. I changed an appointment with the person who cuts my hair. When she saw it was erased in the appt book she called me to make sure I hadn't switched to someone else. I think she's glad to have me as a client even with less than 10% tip. When I go to the salon that does the hair color, it's like a morgue. My stylist doesn't have a client in the chair half the time when I arrive. I would guess she is grateful for the business as a client leaving some tip is better than none at all. I think this is a ridiculous amount of money to spend on my hair but it's one of the few things I splurge on and as long as I'm working and can afford it I don't experiment with cheaper options....See MoreSpeaking of tips - who do you tip at Christmas?
Comments (20)I won't be tipping anyone this year for Christmas 1. POSTAL Carrier: I did gift something special to Donna who was our only carrier for 20 years. Since she retired last year the rural route I live on now has at least 4 different carriers each week and the mail is delivered more often wrong than right. Tip? I don't think so! 2. TRASH: can pickup man makes $5.35 per hr more and the driver of the truck makes $9.50 more per hr. than I. They also have better benefits. Often I have to chase down the rd for my trash can because it has been tossed down and rolls away down the hill. Tip? I don't think so! 3. HOUSE STAFF/Helpers: YES How much depends on what I can afford a Christmas bonus and a B-day gift. These are people who have been my extra hands for years. 4. STYLIST/manicurist: I tipped each service, so No to holiday tip. I don't have salon services often. My hair nails and such I do myself or we friends and daughters have "gals night" where we help each other, have snacks & drinks and talk, watch movies or whatever. More fun than a night at a bar or the movies. 5. PAPER DELIVERY PERSON: Yes I had a young man for years who delivered regular and everyday. I gave him a nice gift of cash $20-$25 for the Holidays. He had the paper to my front door everyday on time and made sure it would be dry if it rained. When he graduated and moved on a man and wife took over. I got tired of paying for a newspaper and not getting it delivered or wet, tattered, having to search the bushes for it when it was. So now when I want one I go to the store and pick one up. Tip? I don't think so! When someone does regular services for me or goes beyond the expected I try to gift as generously as possible. For many of us the budget this year is slim to say the least. debby_ab said she tipped "because I feel guilted into it." I can understand that sentiment. I have tipped a bad server because I felt guilted into it by the folks I was with. NO MORE, NEVER AGAIN The next time I got a bad server the tip consisted of a pamphlet of "hints and tips" How to Serve Better & Receive a Generous Tip from a Past Server. When you feel that the person deserves a bit of extra, you have the funds available and it feels good to give then by all means do. In these harder times right now don't feel you have to "Holiday tip" because it is customary or others do. Happy Holidays LIL...See MoreI broke up with my hairdresser today...
Comments (45)Wow. I have really been saving a lot for a long time! It shows of course too. I had a favorite stylist and even worked for him for a bit way back when. But once I got married my husband had a fit every time went to him. Finally it was too much and I stopped going. I never found another that really did a good job. I left with crooked bangs, lopsided backs inches too short or just plain a massive pain in my neck from them . I have no desire to color my hair (it has always been kind of a different ginger brown blonde color and I get asked what the colors are called) and think gray is really pretty on others and plan on seeing how mine goes. I learned a lot about cutting back in the day and realized since I was coming home and fixing the paid for cuts I finally just did it and cut my own. I would love to have mine done, but no idea by who and seems my sampling salons has only gotten me the worst....maybe that should be my 2016 resolution...See Moresue36
