Cathy!!!!! AAARRRGGH!

I went to Trader Joe's yesterday to pick up some Roasted Red Pepper & Eggplant dipt to make your Roasted Red Pepper Soup. Couldn't find it. Asked a clerk. Guess what? They have discontinued it!

So if anyone sees any in a TJ's, by all means buy it!

Oh no Linda, I feel your pain. We just bought 4 boxes of TJ's Roasted Tomato & Red Pepper Soup while in Baltimore for DGS's Bar Mitzvah. I gave one away, now I'm frowning. Odd though, they were giving hot samples out. Wonder why they would do that if it's discontinued; to clean out inventory? Is that the one?

I have a recipe from Lee Bailey if you want it for the future. Mine (his) doesn't have milk solids, though.

I will stop tomorrow and clean them out if they have any.

Bubbe, it is not the soup, but the dip that they have discontinued. Awsome stuff too. Cathy makes a killer soup with it that she served us while we were in Pigeon Forge. Dang.

Thanks for clearing that up, Peppi
You saved me a schlepp to Baltimore

Thanks for the head's up Linda.

Thank to the thoughtfulness of CF friends, I have eight jars in the pantry. As a backup, and at Jessy's suggestion, I looked for the same product under a different name. I conducted a taste test and it's the same as TJ's.

Notice this is a larger jar than TJ's.

I remember a while back there was a recall on it, maybe that's why they discontinued it? and one time I asked the manager where it was and he said it was a seasonal product from Bulgaria or something. Maybe they'll get it back. They stopped Gyoza, and now they have it back!

If you like that, you should also look for mackdous (pickled eggplant stuffed with walnuts) in your local Lebanese market. It's one of my favorite antipasto dishes. But then I like all eggplant dishes I've had so far, although I'm not terribly fond of Baba Ghanoush. I like it - just not as much as other eggplant dishes, probably because of the texture. I like Moussaka almost as much as Eggplant Parmigiano. I like it better when made without nutmeg or cinnamon.

The mukdous is great just as it is, however. (There are quite a few different spellings for it.)

This brings up a question...how do you serve this as a dip?

I have only used it to make red pepper bisque.

I just use it as is, with pita chips. Spoon it into a dish. It goes quickly!

I'm not fond of anything eggplant, but I love that red pepper spread.

    Cathy,

Since you have some on hand, can you tell me what's listed on the ingredient list? That way i can look for similar locally, or maybe even play around and try to make my own.

    Thanks!

    My pleasure.
    Peppers
    Eggplant
    Sugar
    Sunflower oil
    Salt
    Garlic
    Hot pepper

Order that brand from the link I posted above. I just compared the ingredients, they are identical.

They sell the Zergut brand in no less than three different stores here in Houston. I stocked up. You'll notice on the picture that Cathy linked to, it says Mild. They also have Hot and it comes in both sizes. It's the exact same stuff as what TJs sold, except with a different label. Zergut also makes some other kinds of sauces but I haven't tried any yet.

Our Middle Eastern markets and my Ralphs carry 'ajvar', different brands. Oh well we'll see what TJs puts in its place on the shelf!

Linda, I'm echoing EJ's suggestion. Ajvar is downright delish.
I can't remember the name of the brand I liked best. I've tried a few, some have been okay, and others have been better than TJ's. Word.

That said, I still have a few jars left of TJ's Crack Pepper Dip, which should give me enough time to locate my favorite Ajvar, just in case.

I'll check the supermarket shelves here for avjar. If I can't find any, then I at least have the link to order and the list to try to copy. Depending on my mood, I guess!

    Thanks!

I also took that suggestion from Jessica, and bought the Ajvar at Mediterranean Island. It's yummy, I even like it BETTER than the TJ's stuff, it's cheaper and I can get it in mild, medium and hot. Since I'm a wimp, I like the mild.

Amanda eats the stuff as sandwich spread on whole wheat bread. I eat it with pita chips or veggie tortilla chips, I still haven't made the soup.
