Probably a silly question....but...?

Recently DH did the groceery shopping and picked up a box of bite-size shredded wheat, not the Honey Nut shredded that I like. I opened it anyhow, even tried honey with it but it is AWFUL! It could probably be fed to the squirrels, birds etc., but I wondered if it could be crushed and used in the kitchen...breading of some kind? It is not a big deal but anyhow, I thought I would consult the experts.

SHREDDED WHEAT BREAD

Ingredients

* 2 cups boiling water
* 1 cup crushed Shredded Wheat cereal
* 1/2 cup molasses
* 2 tablespoons shortening
* 1-1/2 teaspoons salt
* 1 package (1/4 ounce) active dry yeast
* 1/4 cup warm water (110Â° to 115Â°)
* 5-1/2 to 6-1/2 cups all-purpose flour
* Melted butter, optional

Directions

* In a large bowl, pour boiling water over cereal. Add the molasses, shortening and salt. Let stand until mixture cools to 110Â°-115Â°, stirring occasionally.
* In a bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water. Add cereal mixture and 3 cups flour. Beat until smooth. Stir in enough remaining flour to form a soft dough (dough will be sticky).
* Turn onto a floured surface; knead until smooth and elastic, about 6-8 minutes. Place in a greased bowl, turning once to grease top. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 1 hour.
* Punch dough down. Turn onto a lightly floured surface; divide in half. Shape into loaves. Place in two greased 9-in. x 5-in. loaf pans. Cover and let rise until doubled, about 1 hour.
* Bake at 375Â° for 30-35 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from pans to wire racks. Brush with melted butter if desired. Cool. Yield: 2 loaves (16 slices each).

Out of curiosity, where in upstate NY? I visited somebody at Cornell and it's beautiful there. How much shade? I think Kentucky bluegrass (KBG) is probably the best choice for upstate New York in sunny areas. For shady areas, a fine fescue mix would be better. If you have a mixture of sun and shade, you'll probably want to plant KBG in the sunny areas and transition to a mixture of KBG and fine fescue and then all fine fescue in the shade. If you google "Kentucky Bluegrass Seed Selections" you'll find a variety of resources to pick good cultivars. I don't think there are as many choices for fine fescues. Some people have reported good results with the Bonny Dunes mixture.

If you have a regular circular saw, you can buy a quality dry diamond blade for anywhere from $15-$40. I've cut dozens of pavers/edgers of all sizes with the DeWalt blade I bought several years ago. They're relatively inexpensive and easy to use if you're comfortable using a circular saw. I bought mine at Lowe's 3 years ago for $15 and it still cuts fine. You don't need water to cool it but it's recommended you use a dust mask, eye protection and ear plugs, work slowly, and make multiple passes on anything over 2 inches thick. You can cut straight through a 1.5" paver with one. I've even cut 3.5" retaining wall blocks with mine using multiple passes from both sides. I do use multiple passes regardless of thickness because the saw doesn't work as hard and it's easier than making one deep cut. I use mine on a 25 year old Skil Saw and have never had a problem except when I've been off with my measurements. Oh, and one time when I forgot to set the paver I was cutting on top of another to avoid cutting a nice little groove in our driveway. That was a slap-your-forehead, "Ohhhhhhhhh, *bleep*" moment.

Same genus, Ryan, different species - the primary differences being the hardy fig (F carica) and it's edible/delicious fruit is usually, but not always discussed here. I think it might be tasty added into a Chex Mix type recipe. Of course, I prefer the non-sweetened shredded wheat, myself. I suspect you could also whiz it in a food processor very quickly and use it in a breading for faux fried chicken (shake 'n' bake style.)

Remember you can store the shredded wheat in the freezer to keep until needed, too.

Fried Chicken
4 servings

1/3 c crushed shredded wheat biscuit
3 Tbsp dry cream of wheat
1 Tbsp flour
1 tsp sugar
1 tsp paprika
3/4 tsp salt
1/4 tsp pepper
4 large chicken legs
4 large chicken thighs
milk
cooking oil

Place crushed shredded wheat, cream of wheat, flour, sugar, paprika, salt & pepper in plastic or paper bag. Close bag & shake to mix.
Dip chicken pieces in milk. Shake chicken in cereal mixture, one piece at a time, till well coated.
Place on rack; let dry about 20 minutes.
Heat 1/4 inch of oil in large skillet.
Brown chicken in hot oil about 15 minutes.
Reduce heat & cover. Cook over low heat for 30 to 40 minuted until tender.
Uncover last 10 minutes to crisp chicken.

OR bake in oven:
Heat oven to 400 degrees.
Place 1/3 c butter & 1/3 c shortening in 9x13 cooking dish, & place in oven until melted.
Remove from oven, & add chicken pieces.
Bake 30 to 25 minutes, turn & bake 30 minutes longer.
