Mfr Rebates on HP's

With the new $1500 tax credit as part of the stimulus package we are going to move forwared with a new HP system. I have seen some posts regarding mfr rebates in the spring. Is this common? Do all mfr's do this? Any particular month and if you install prior to them announcing a rebate are you precluded? We are probably going with a Heil unit based on AHRI performance data and reasonable price. Thanks

I would hope your Heil dealer is holding your system before it gets away. Remember the one you were considering was a discontinued model. the high end major mfgs such as Trane, Carrier, Lennox usually have rebates in the spring. the middle tier and low end brands sold more on price normally don't. Heil was offering an improved warranty on their products but I believe this expired end of January. keep in mind the minimum standard to qualify for the Fed Stimulus tax credit is 15/12/9 on high eff HPs. and you must have certificate from the manufacturer that verifies your system qualifies. you were getting a nice deal on the Heil. Why wait?

Hey Tiger,
I clicked your link. Am I interpreting this correctly. A trane 15i system gets a $1500 stimulus tax credit?

What is that tax credit any way...you get to keep $1500 of your taxes or you are taxed on $1500 less income.

Mike, I agree they are swamped, but if I'm going to do it I'd love to start saving right away (August a/c!). Do you think their prices are any lower in September? I wonder if any of them would admit it, maybe give me a discount if I wait for their slow season. I don't think I'm getting a rebate eligible system....I wish I knew if the njcleanenergy program would run out of $$ if I wait. I know last year's program was even better, but I didn't know about it them :( THe hvac guys seem to discount the idea of the extra wear and tear, but it just seems common sense to me. However, they stand to get more business if it does wear out or break down. I always try to remember the source of any inof I get, and where they might be biased. That's why I like this site!

"If the old 2 1/2 ton unit cooled the space to your satisfaction don't see any reason this one wouldn't do the same." - For cooling only, in a mild climate like Florida or the South, I would agree. The issue is that Andre has a heat pump which is his primary source of heat in the winter time. This is a whole other game when compared to straight a/c and I think that this is where the confusion lies. In summer, the a/c unit has about a 20 degree max differential requirement with outside air temps at mid 90s and typical inside air temps at mid 70s. In winter, the differential is at least twice as much ( maybe 50 degrees) with outside, Northeast PA, air temps in the 20s and inside air temps near 70. Below freezing, more expensive auxillary heat will be needed to keep the house at the setpoint temp. The capacity of the heat pump system must be maximized in the heating mode as this has the largest load requirement in addition to a longer usage throughout the months of the year. A heat pump condenser unit must be matched in size and SEER rating for maximum winter performance. A sytem that has a condenser which is smaller in size than the evap coil will suffer greatly in winter, at a time when the most electricity will be used and the btu needs are at a max.

Good advice from Ryan. I did something similar to what DaWard is thinking about doing. I found a local contractor that sells Goodman to the public (York, PA). I specked out the 14 SEER heat pump system myself and picked it up at his warehouse. My wife works for a Property Management company so I used them for the install and paid labor only. Labor had a 1 year warranty and the 10 year parts warranty is covered by Goodman because it is a non-internet sale. Paid $2500 for all equipment (R-22 condenser w/Copeland scroll, 3 speed a/h, TXV, heat strips, by-pass humifier, condenser mounting pad) and $1200 for the install = $3700. Almost $2k less than a Trane 14i. 1 year later and so far outstanding. Reduced my kw consumption by 40% compared to my 21 year-old 7 SEER Trane. Puts out great (and cheap) heat in the winter and I can freeze meat in the family room when its 95F outside. I will say that I have a few minor issues with my Goodman: - Sheet metal on hair handler is very flimsy. - Filter rack in air handler is poorly designed so changing the air filter is a surgical procedure. I think that the Goodman is a good basic system, with some flimsy sheet metal, but very few systems fail from flimsey sheet metal. If the compressor and coils hold up, the system should last at least 10 years. I'll find out. Take care.

I have no idea about the rebates, but I suspect that you're bearing the cost of the rebate via an inflated initial price. Bottom line is the price is the price. Compare between multiple contractors and make a decision. Someone not offering the "rebate" may have a better price anyway. Don't let discussion of rebates or coupons sway you over the bottom line. I looked at Carrier before we put in our new system- circumstances forced us to go with Rheem/Ruud. But I spent a decent amount of time learning about the Carrier equipment (now 3 years ago). The revelation for me was finally looking at Carrier's commercial website. The "Infinity, Comfort and Base" monikers don't seem to have a direct connection to their model numbers. And the issue is that different models have different mfr. warranties for the compressor, etc. I'd want clarification on what models the quotes are based on. Hopefully you've read all the discussion here about the importance of Manual J sizing. And my preference, esp. for new ductwork, would be to get a duct blaster test done, too.

I believe I was mistaken on the standard to qualify for the HP credit. It is not 15/13/9. see below. andre, a tax credit is just that. it is a deduction from taxes owed. if your tax liability is $5000, then you deduct up to a max of $1500(30% of system cost). I would say a pretty good deal when in recent yrs ,it's just been $300.

Air Source Heat Pumps Split Systems:
HSPF >= 8.5
EER >= 12.5
SEER >= 15

Package systems:
HSPF >= 8
EER >= 12
SEER >= 14

30% of cost, up to $1,500(2) Note Â not all ENERGY STAR products will qualify for the tax credit.

ENERGY STAR Spec:

Split Systems:
HSPF >= 8.2 EER >= 12 SEER >= 14.5

Package systems:
HSPF >= 8 EER >= 11 SEER >= 14

2Subject to a $1,500 maximum per homeowner for all improvements combined

..so the 15i should qualify? And you are saying that if the accountant says I owe $4800 for the year then I really owe $3500....

if the system meets the qualifying standard and a three ton with var speed air handler should.

you need to brush up on your math-your example should be $3300.

of course, you have to wait on the credit when you file your 2009 tax return next year. and I believe you will need to submit the qualifying mfg certificate with your return.

why wait? dealers will probably go up on pricing. make certain your dealer holds price firm for at least 60 days to see if Trane offers their usual Spring rebate program.

I just said they probably will raise prices to 'grab' some of the rebate. Our issue is we were told we needed 2.5 ton system....whats up with the 3 ton thing?

No, your dealer isn't going to take the tax credit off the invoice. You'll have some paperwork to do for the tax credit... it's not off the bill per se, though in effect you are saving that money.

Andre.. to get the minimum 15 SEER/12.5 EER/8.5 HSPF you'll need one of the following air handlers with the 2.5 ton XL15i 4TWX5030:

4TEE3F39: 15.75 SEER/13 EER/9 HSPF
4TEE3F40: 16 SEER/13 EER/9 HSPF

ok, this is...well a ... sort of exciting. Dad says he just spoke with the guy who thought the 2.5 ton WAS included...he is checking. He said if Dad's house could take a 3 ton unit the extra half ton would cost him $500 more over the 2.5 ton...does this sound right...I did not think increasing by a half ton was $500...?

...guy at my Dads...said he needed to switch indoor handler matched with 2.5T unit to qualify for rebate....likely as tiger described.

ryan, checked, he did have to change the handler, said normally it would be $150 more...did not charge though...
