Newbie question - which back-up heat?

I live in Charleston SC, and am wondering what the best option for back-up heat would be for a replacement HP. I have a 4 Ton Jantrol that periodically breaks down and now has sprung a leak. It's only 8 years young but I don't want to put any more money down that balck hole(I understand the original owner had troubles with it from the start). I also have natural gas with the meter near the package unit. I was thinking of investigating a new package unit with natural gas as the back up heat instead of the standard electric heat strips. I recently talked to the utility company and they said during the last billing month, we had 19 nights below 40, 9 nights below 30 and 1 night below 20 degrees - the coldest it's been this winter. With the moderate temperatures here and the emphasis on cooling and dehumidifying during late spring/summer/early fall, what do you experienced guys recommend as far as SEER/EER/HSPF, type of back-up heat (gas or electric)? and make/model of unit?

Thanks in advance for all responses.
