Need two new Heat Pumps - comparing Trane / Carrier / Lennox
Comments (3)Sylvia Non coastal location? I prefer a small dealer where owner is actively involved in business, sales and service/repair. Not a fan of Lennox heat pumps. Here is my checklist. Correct sizing is important for comfort and operating cost. there are three equally important components-quality HVAC, the install by dealer, and probably the most overlooked and disregarded is the ductwork system. these are my minimum specs for a new HP system. both outside and inside units should be replaced to have a properly matched system. 15 SEER, 12.5+ EER, 9 HSPF best matching VS air handler full BTUs in both cooling and heating for your rated size R-410a refrigerant(same as Puron) scroll compressor preferred electronic demand defrost preferred thermostat with "dehumidify on demand" feature staged backup heat strips new and correctly sized refrigerant lineset 10 yr warranty compressor and parts AHRI matching number for the system quoted you want a thorough inspection of your ductwork system. size, overall condition, supply and return lines, insulation qualities, leak test, etc. any hot/cold spot issues in your home should be addressed. I would look at Trane/AmStd,Rheem/Rudd,Carrier/Bryant. Depending on location and winter climate, I would not purchase a new HP system that did not have electronic demand defrost feature. Electronic demand defrost eliminates unnecessary, nuisance, and expensive defrost calls. Not important though for your location. Trane and it's dealers do think highly of the brand, sometimes a little too much. Look at their sister brand, American Standard that is very similar and usually priced better. Comments (3)the gov here are the performance numbers for AmStd, York, and Carrier Infinity 16. while i admit i like Trane/AmStd HPs, the XL16i disappoints in EER and both cooling and heating BTUs. And yes, it does matter from an operating cost perspective. I will assume that 4 ton is correct size. I am not a fan of Lennox and don't know much about York. Clearly the Carrier Infinity 16 HP hybrid system with Infinity controller is the best choice. The AccuClean is an EAC while the Honeywell F-200 is just a 4-5" pleated media filter. Big difference in cost. The Honeywell would be more than adequate for most residential homes and there is no maintenance/cleaning issues for the homeowner like the AccuClean/CleanEffects. If you do elect the AmStd, request the Honeywell VisionPro IAQ stat or AmStd's new 900 series stat. Comments (4)Thank you very much for taking time to answer. I'm so overwhelmed because I know nothing about HVAC. I have gas heat. House is split level around 1800 sq ft The furnace is I believe Trane brand and installed 6 years ago. Last summer during rebate period we were told by two different contractors that we wouldn't qualify since the furnace is not efficient enough to make the numbers work - thus we were given quotes for 13 SEER AC systems. Thanks for the hint about brand name coil. I have no idea what coil is but I'll request it. Anything else I should know?...See MoreAdvice on new Carrier/Bryant furnace and AC system
Comments (10)Ryan: Unfortunately adding PVC venting would significantly add to the cost and difficulty, thereby extending the "payback" time beyond the time I foresee myself being in the house. The older model is new in box per contractor and he will provide me with confirmation via documentation prior to install. The Lennox quote was for a G60VST + XC14ST for $9331 but only 1 year warranty on labor & parts. As well, I have been told by a number of different dealers that Lennox parts are sometimes slower to be had than Trane or Carrier for some reason. I was somewhat put off by the Lennox contractor in that I asked for the coil mdoel number to look up whether the AC would qualify for an energy star tax credit and he would not give me the model #. He said he looked it up and that the coil he proposed would not qualify but a more expensive one would. basic programmable t-stat was included in the quote. The Trane quote was for XV80 + XL15i. Total was $9620 with a 3 year contractor's labor warranty. No t-stat included on the Trane quote. I have confidence in the contractor but is the Trane system really worht $800 more than the Carrier/Bryant as proposed?? What I liked about the Carrier/Bryant contractor was the fact that he was going to re-work some sheetmetal to change a transition from an 'L'-shape to a sweeping 90 turn to help improve airflow. Nobody else proposed this. Would welcome any further thoughts you have. Thanks much for your time. Jeff...See Morecarolinamomof2
