New hvac system setup suggestions

I have a new Trane dual fuel system: XV95@60K btu + XL15i H.P. and a Honeywell Prestige tstat. In the NW around Portland my rates are: Electricity-$0.10/kwh, NG-$1.10/therm (and dropping).

I would like to know the optium set points and setup for the tstat and system ?

What size is your HP condenser?

What size is your home?

While I don't know your COP, I used 2.8 which may be on the low side. With that said, on a BTU basis alone, there is a marginal cost advantage of HP heating over nat gas less than 10%. Numbers below.

Electric baseboard: $2.64
Heat pump: $1.05
Natural gas: $1.12

I probably would set the changeover at 32-35 degrees and adjust as necessary to the temp that provides good comfort for you and your family.
The changeover could go lower but you have a nice furnace and it should be used

It is my understanding that Portland has relatively mild winter temp averaging around freezing. Yes, I know they can go lower. I personally think the XV95 furnace was overkill and the XV80 a better choice.

Pay attention to your nat gas rate. When it gets close to $1.00/therm, you would basically be close to a wash with electric HP heat.

IN my neck of the woods, I pay $0.20 per KWHH which translates to $5.85 per 100000 BTU for electricity.

Depends on where the OP lives before making the calculation

You've got your prerequisites down pretty well. The basement adds little to the cooling load, but as far as heating goes, do you plan on spending considerable time down there? When do you plan on finishing it? Your contractor may want to take it into consideration when doing his load calculation (which I hope he does). You can zone the basement off either with electronic or manual dampers. Some homes have vents on the floor, but I would prefer them on the ceiling (mine are mostly on the floor by the way). I would go for R-410a refrigerant as well. As far as systems go, I like what Trane has to offer. A new 3-ton XL15i was just installed down the street from where I live. They make some quality products (but then again so does Rheem, Carrier, etc...)

Sizing can be less of an issue when you have multiple units. Because each unit is controlled independently, provided of course the unit itself is not over sized for the area in which it serves resulting in excessive short cycling. In your case 3 ton plus 2 ton isn't necessarily equal to 5 tons of cooling... unless you drive those thermostats really low. By having two systems with total capacity of 5 tons (which, most of the time this would be oversized for a 1700 - 1800 sq ft structure) has a few advantages. 1. You have the ability to use one system only during low heat days or set the opposing unit higher. The unit set higher only runs if load conditions warrant.... meaning if it's not hot, the thermostat controlling the unit does not call... the unit can not run without a call... 2. Utility bills can be much less... because you rarely use both systems at the same time. You run the bedroom system when you sleep, the other when you're awake. If you have a home office in one the bedrooms you may need to rethink things a bit. 3. Extra capacity for when it's hot out. When it's hot you have the capacity to cool the home. (even while entertaining guests --- additional people add heat) Remember heat waves come, heat waves go... a so call 'properly sized' AC system is essentially properly sized roughly 10% of the time... especially if that system is a single speed AC system. Alot of people I come across like to sleep cool. So for that reason I doubt I would change the configuration of the space. Once you realize what you have, the choices you make are mostly budget type concerns. Essentially a set up like this runs like a 2 stage system. This kind of subject is above the pay grade of many... choose your contractor wisely. I service the Katy, Texas area.

@booty bums See here to respond to the questions you bring up. @Seabornman That's exactly true here, too (another NE state) on the solar. Just so folks who aren't familiar understand how this works. It's called "net metering". I live in one of the darkest states in the country, but the sunnier months produce excess electricity. This goes on the grid, and I get credits for it that I use in the winter. As I mentioned, I have NO heat bill. I actually have no electric bill year round. My house is all-electric. This also means the electric company doesn't have to buy (expensive) electricity; instead, it can use the excess electricity coming from folks' solar panels. This keeps prices down for everyone on the grid. IMO Most anyone with a home would want to check to see if there's net metering in their state. You might pay off solar panels way faster than you think. For instance, are you paying $500/month for heating or cooling as many people do around here? Also, if you can't do solar panels (maybe your house is in the shade), in some states there's community solar. You buy into it. The panels around here are in old meadows and landfills, generally out of sight. I'm guessing excess energy from any alternative source could be uploaded to the grid. I had thought of using a windmill in winter! But I'm not sure how my electric company handles this. IMO every state should have the net metering option or get them legislated ASAP. Soon solar (or another alternative energy source) will be essential for selling a house. ****** Incidentally, my state also audits the "tightness" in your home. There are extra incentives that go along with this. ***** Footnote: while the netZero set up in my home might sound complex, it's actually very simple. Just clever. Basically: 10" thick walls, energy-saving materials like double-paned windows, solar, shed roof, CERV, heat pump. Habitat for Humanity is building houses like this around here; it is LESS EXPENSIVE than what they otherwise build.

Load 40k heat, 25k cool

Tigerdunes....I know you like the 80s, but the xv95 cost was minimal in difference.

joeplumb....weather is mild, but 2 months a year are below 30 at night, 2 months a year are above 90 in the day. Hudimity is 50 or more, fog, rain is common with freezing fog.

Did you add a filter cabinet?

I hope I answered your question about settings-I assume you meant the outdoor temp to change from electric to nat gas heat and vice versa. On defrost calls, I would only want low stage of nat gas heat to temper air. I would ask installing dealer about that. Not certain that can be accomplished. Not a big deal though.

I've been noticing my (oil) furnace running even when above the crossover set point that I have selected. (25 Deg.)

Yesterday I discovered what was going on - I have 2 year old Carrier equipment with a Carrier Edge Thermostat - there is a setting that calls for the furnace to continue operating until the thermostat temperature setting is reached after the furnace has run during a defrost cycle. By default this feature was enabled. (it overrides the crossover temperature setting.)

While I do have small setbacks, I have them sized and timed based on the assumption that the heat pump alone will operate above the set crossover temperature.

I disabled this feature yesterday and I am now seeing what I desire. I unnecessarily used about 75 gallons of oil in January. @#$%^&

Yes, it's a 4 inch one....20x20. It seems the 4 inch, or for that matter, the 5 inch filters aren't true to size.....more like 4 3/16 or a bit under for the 4.

Any suggestions on brand that can be purchased from HD or Lowes ?

Not sure yet. I believe it will be custom made. I specified gaskets, hinged door with gasket...etc. It will be attached to the return air at the top of the furnace in a downflow setup.

Yes, I will. Looking at what is available in the "box stores", I'm thinking somewhere between 10 and 12 ?

Being a Trane system, I would want their Perfect Fit Media cabinet. The name alone explains why. The cabinet fits to the furnace like a hand fits a glove. It has gaskets that seal the door nicely. Very easy to open and close when replacing filters. Filters while proprietary size can be purchased at Internet filter houses, both OEM and generics.
