Sad beyond belief

This morning I found out that my BFF's eldest son passed away suddenly yesterday. He was in his mid-30's, had just finished his Ph.D. in history recently, has a wife and 3 young children (a set of twins and a new daughter born this past December). The VM didn't say how he had died so I naturally thought maybe a car accident or something like that. No, he died of sepsis. They have no idea how he got the infection in the first place. They think it might have been from a skin rash he had. He felt bad at the end of the week and went to his doctor; the doctor said it was a virus--go home and rest. Sunday a.m. he couldn't stand so his wife called for an ambulance. He passed away Monday morning.

I'm trying to get ready to drive down to Texas to be with her and her family, but I can't seem to stay on task or think straight. My mind just keeps saying, "Oh my God, he's dead, he's dead!!! The grief in my heart and in my head feels like it's going to explode. I've been through the death of a close loved one more times than I care to remember, but the circumstances of this one are hitting particularly hard. I'm sorry to bother you with this, but I just needed to talk. Please hug your children extra tight tonight and say a prayer for this family. Thank you.

Oh Flowers! I am so sorry to hear your shocking news! Dying at such a young age is devastating. Sepsis? Wow! Please tell your friend that I am thinking and praying for her family. My good wishes to you also.

I've been giving my kids extra hugs lately anyway for my own reasons. Life is so short.

X: Everytime you post something, I learn something new..Thank you and thank you all for this thread.. I did notice that when I supply no heat to a plant room and group many plants together, it is the highest humid room in my home all winter..It can read 50 on my hygrometer on any givin very dry cold day outside, while the rest of the home reads 30, and when I mist all my plants to get the dust off, the hygrometer can read as much as 80 for the entire day..Once the heat goes on, even misting can't raise the humidity in that room, in fact it drops..I think it makes a wet mini micro climate for the plants surrounded by that water or being sprayed until the leaves have dried off.. Maybe putting a 4inch potted violet on top of pebbles in a 12 ich saucer sitting on stones with water surrounding it might provide some local humidity for that individual plant.No? Mike

I feel your pain. With the exception of cymbidiums, I have very bad luck with orchids that spike in early winter. In my greenhouse, a spiking orchid in late fall/early winter is almost guaranteed as a death sentence to the flowers. No matter what I tried, I usually end up with just one or two flowers out of several spikes. My orchids that spike between April and October all have very good success rates. So I try to avoid any "winter spikers" with new purchases, and continue to negotiate with my existing ones that do - otherwise they get traded to someone with better "winter luck".

Two days before Newtown, we had a shooter at one of our local malls. Everyone I talk to is nervous to go out to the malls right now. I work for the State, and I worry about nuts coming into our building and firing off shots. There is a young man who claims to have a CCW and he allegedly drew a bead on the mall shooter, claims to have made eye contact but he didn't shoot because there were other people near by. Then the story goes on to say that after that the shooter killed himself. I say this is 'allegedly' because law enforcement has given some conflicting reports. Regardless, if he did or didn't, the mall is posted as a Gun Free Zone...so that didn't stop a CCW carrier. I don't think these assassins chose gun free zones for that reason, they go where they KNOW they're going to be able to cause mass casualties. Another thing I try to point out is that very, very few people posess the absolute control that a tactically trained person has. All these shooters wear body armor, therefore it'd require a sniper kill shot to the head to take them out. Good luck getting some weekend paper target shooter to make a shot like that, much less someone who rarely, if ever draws a weapon. We all like to think we will be in command if an emergency crisis occurs, but it's just not in our nature! Having to kill someone is not something the majority of citizens has ever had to comprehend in real time. And to have the ability to identify a danger and act? Yeah right. My very first instinct would be to take cover and run, get to a safe place and then, and only then, take offensive measures. I think everyone who thinks they should walk around with a gun on their person try this experiment. Go into a public place with a friend, one that is well populated. Instead of your gun, have a rubber band shooter or some other non-lethal 'gun'. Have your friend shout out KITTY CAT! and turn to point to a 3rd person who is wearing a clown wig and has a similar 'gun'. That person is a shooter. Now, whip out your 'gun' and 'shoot' the shooter. Of course, it's going to be at a random point in time, you're in on this...but you don't know when or where it'll happen. Now, lets time your reaction and see if you actually hit the target and/or were YOU or someone else hit. A non-lethal exercise to gauge just what a Dirty Harry you are. I hate that people need to have a gun in the home for protection, but in some cases it is needed, if you live in a rural area where law enforcement is far away. In that case, I'd certainly hope you have a couple of big, loud dogs as an early warning system. But if you have a gun in the home, why does it have to be a weapon capable of shooting more than 6 bullets at a time? Really, if you're in a situation where an intruder has a semi-auto-chances are you're already going to kiss your hind end goodbye.

Sweeby, Imamommy, Intheblender, Quirk, Lovehadley and Vivian31, thanks so much for your great input! Indeed, I'm not sure where the idea came from that (a) we "badmouth" BM's supernatural beliefs to SKs or (b) that it is exclusively MY life view. DH and I are in personal accord and we've never said anything negative to the girls. We have made the basic statement which was agreed on with BM and her DH, which is, "keep an open but discerning mind about anything anyone tells you about anything." We think that's pretty safe, and they are obviously following it. I think maybe BM is having second thoughts about that policy; when they were little, it was easy enough to get them to believe that certain information sources were of equal validity to verifiable facts, but as they are growing up, as many of you have pointed out, their intellects are maturing and they are becoming their own people. But changing the subject a little bit, yesterday BM called DH about a totally different matter, something not having to do with the girls. Listening to her, it suddenly occured to me that maybe her anger the other day was largely a mask for anxiety...she does try to approach my DH when she is worried about something. Like, even though she knows well that he does not share her supernatural beliefs, she was feeling disappointed and felt the need to connect with him. I'm still wondering what her DH thinks about her many phone calls to my DH...her continued attempt to get my DH to be her shoulder to cry on, even though DH is totally businesslike. We talked about it more over the weekend.

Thank you Breezy and Angie for your kind words, thoughts, and prayers. I'm leaving in a few minutes to drive down to TX to be with my friend and her family. To say they are devastated is an understatement. That a simple skin rash can result in sepsis and death is so scary. Thank you for keeping them in your prayers.

I'm so sorry Flowers for your friend's horrible loss. I've been hearing of this more and more recently. My friend's mom just died from this very thing a few weeks ago in Florida. Please be safe in your travels and prayers for your friend's family and for you.

I got back last night from the funeral. Friends and family flew in from all over the US. Many of his students (he was a middle school history teacher) and their parents attended as well. He was well loved and respected, that's for sure.

His death almost certainly could have been avoided with the proper medical attention. Unfortunately, his doctor dismissed the rash and lesion on his inner thigh and said his symptoms were from a virus--go home and rest. He did and got steadily worse until he was rushed to the hospital. Organ failure commenced in spite of the strong antibiotics he was given. It was simply too little too late. How quickly this young man succumbed to this is truly frightening.

Thank you all for your prayers and words of comfort.

Flwrs, so sorry to hear of your friend's death. Surely it could have been avoided.

A couple of year back, my husband's doctor was out of town, so when he had lesions on his head and an open sore on the inside of his knee, he went to a local dermatologist who was well respected. For botox, as we determined. He looked at my husband's head and prescribed some ointment and wouldn't look at his knee. Hubs was furious! Got an appointment to the Regional Oncology Center (he was known there because of 3 different kinds of cancer from Agent Orange), and went to see his oncologist. Immediately, he was slapped into the hospital and rigged up with bags of antibiotics. He had mersa. If he had waited, he would have died. He was in the infectious ward in a single room. He wouldn't let me visit so I shopped for jammies and handed them through the door to my husband. Picked him up 5 days later. That was the only time he had been hospitalized during any of the cancer treatments. Scary!!! We did talk on our cellphones, but that was our only contact. His doctors were from small islands in the Caribbean where they have a lot of infectious diseases. He was treated very well but happy to get home!

Your friend's doctor really dropped the ball. It takes someone with a lot of experience to accurately diagnose the seemingly simple problems thereby saving the patient. It's hard to find those angels of life!!

Beachlily, I'm so glad your husband's infection was addressed quickly and effectively once he went to his oncologist. I so wish this young man's doctor would have done the same. I think that's why I've been completely unable to focus on anything since I got back from the funeral; I just keep thinking he never should have died. I'm supposed to be getting ready to leave to visit my DS and his wife in OK on Wednesday and I'm having a terrible time trying to get myself organized to go down there even for a short visit.

Actually, my friend's cousin is a nursing professor and strongly suspects the infection may have been mersa. His wife and children and have not been back in the house since this all happened and are trying to figure out if they need to decontaminate the contents of the house (not sure how one would go about doing that).

I'm probably going back a little after July 4th since my friend's DH works out of the country for 30 days and then is home for 30. His 30 days out of country begins July 1. I'm sure this will all hit her hard when he leaves (they're currently in the middle of moving and should be completely moved before he leaves). I'll go back down to spend some time with her and help her get settled into the new house.
