Sniff....sad so sad....

I had waited through fall and winter, watching the sheaths for buds....and finally, buds did appear! 2 spikes with 4 flowers each...8 flowers! Then BLAST BLAST BLAST until I had only one bud left and here it is:

better luck next year eh?

That stinks, Steph!! :( That would have been some display! But hey - your single bloom is a real show stopper in itself...it certainly knows how to bask in it's own glory and it's not afraid to show it either! :)

As a medical professional, it continues to frustrate me that we easily do heart transplants - but the treatment of depression is still very challenging. The incidence and prevalence of depression is significant. Many people will experience major clinical depression in their lifetime. Suicide is a complication of depression, just like infection is a complication of a laceration. Some get the complication, others don't. Yet talking about mental illness is so taboo. Depression is impaired brain chemistry - not a personal transgression. Insurance coverage for mental illness is so lacking. Insurance pays generously for for the complications of alcoholism, overeating, and smoking - things people have far more control over. Sorry for my soapbox rant, but in emergency medicine I see so many victims of suicide, both the individual and family & friends left behind. Hopefully his death will bring more attention to the need for better mental health care.

This is the time to work on your soil. Add compost, manure and good mulch. Keep the roots in good shape. Roses always do better with rain than hose water. You should see what the drought is doing to my roses in CA. The year it rained and rained was my best year ever. But roses want sun and warmth too. If you have been using chemical fertilizers instead of natural ones then you might want to give your soil some TLC while the roses take a break.

jakkom We went in today on the last day, and they did say that Willowside Meats on Guerneville Hwy will still be having the necks/carcasses etc . The burgers and some hens will be distributed by DIESTEL family ranch. Unfortunately, no one else has shown an interest in carrying their products! I'm very surprised that local places like Olivers and Pacific Market haven't stepped up!

Don't ya just hate blasting! I have a beauty that has blasted everything 2 years in a row....It's a noid so I have no idea what the blooms might look like....maybe next year. Yours is gorgeous!~Charm

Beautiful! Could you imagine if all 8 flowers opened? It would be a bouquet, you wouldn't see any other part of the plant. Wow, that would be amazing.

Thanx for all the kind comments and cheering up! I knew our members would understand how I felt (unlike the people around me who think pink phals are the new fragrance of Bath and Body's new Orchid lotion)

This one I picked up at the NYIOS...it's an unregistered hybrid: Lc. Shellie Compton x Tokyo Magic 'Lea'

This cross is available through Aloha Orchid but I did not get it from them. I had meant to register it but then the RHS changed some names in the cattleya/laelia/sophronitis branch and I couldn't figure things out so I put it on the back burner.

I feel your pain.
With the exception of cymbidiums, I have very bad luck with orchids that spike in early winter.
In my greenhouse, a spiking orchid in late fall/early winter is almost guaranteed as a death sentence to the flowers. No matter what I tried, I usually end up with just one or two flowers out of several spikes.
My orchids that spike between April and October all have very good success rates.
So I try to avoid any "winter spikers" with new purchases, and continue to negotiate with my existing ones that do - otherwise they get traded to someone with better "winter luck".
