Ye olde matzo crunch done with saltines. Passover's coming and I'll be making a boatload of this stuff (with the matzo of course), my kids devour it.

I quickly read your post and it sounded gross!! I read it as "sardines" instead of "saltines" -- then I saw the "Chocolate" and thought I could not even imagine those two flavors together!!! I guess I shouldn't be in such a hurry when I read these. I think I'll give it a try.

I have a friend who makes this for their annual Christmas party. She calls it "Pine Bark." YUM!

I make Paula Deen's recipe for Pine Bark which is nearly identical except for the pecans. It is fantastic! Hers calls for some almond extract to be added to the melted butter/sugar mixture before pouring over the crackers and putting it in the oven. I forget that step sometimes, but when I do, it makes all the difference in the world. Try it sometime!

I do something very similar but since it's usually for kids (because of nut allergies) I use crushed Smarties (candy coated milk chocolate) on top. It looks pretty. It is so good.

I should have known that many of you have already made it. Thank you for the great suggestions, and I could have easily written "sardines" instead of "saltines."

I just recently had this at a baby shower and I was surprised that they were good.

My Dad use to eat sardines with crackers....I just can't stomach them to this day.....sorry...with chocolate is just insane!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've made something similar, but I used graham crackers instead of saltines and sliced almonds instead of pecans. I just made a pan of your recipe and it's cooling in the fridge.

Here's a recipe I make for my grandkids

CHOCOLATE SQUARES

In a heavy pot melt

1 cup chocolate chips
1 cup peanut butter (smooth or chunky)
3/4 cup of honey.

When melted and mixed add

3 cups rice krispies
1 cup peanuts

Press into a 7 x 11 pan (or whatever size you have)
Refrigerate and cut into squares.

Kids really enjoy these. I sometimes use dried cranberries and raisins instead of peanuts.

Almond Heaven Bites

1 package of Keebler Club Crackers (30 crackers)
1/2 cup butter or margarine
1/2 cup sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
Slivered almonds (we used a lit- tle more than 1/2 cup)

Grease a cookie sheet. Place crackers flat on the cookie sheet and sprinkle with almonds. In a saucepan, melt the butter, add sugar and vanilla, and bring to a slow bubble. Remove from heat and drizzle mixture over crackers and almonds. Bake at 350 degrees for 8 minutes. Remove immediately. Place cookies on waxed paper.

simply delicious, tried it a couple of days ago, it reminds me of Twix candy bars, my husband loves it, it's a keeper, i did not use nuts, just plain. next time, i will try it using graham crackers , makes it "healthy"

I really like sardines and crackers, but not with chocolate, LOL.

As for the original recipe, how can something with a cup of butter, some brown sugar and chocolate be bad? I do think I'd hate to waste all those good ingredients on saltine crackers! I wonder how homemade shortbread cookies would be as a base instead?
